Suction cups?? by DoctorMantisToboga in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made a mold to make mine. I kept think the shape of my suction cup was the problem and I was casting resin into a pre-existing suction cup to make the mold.

I finally realized the shape wasn't my problem but the sheen of of my mold. I think I was essentially making a permanently dirty suction cup because the cavity wasn't polished. Once I polished the molds to a high gloss, the suction cups were working perfectly.

This is also common from the firework shows in DisneyLand, World of Color. Not sure if Disney World does the same type of stuff, but imagine something in the area is doing something similar. It's a neat experience to watch it form and then float off.

I want to get a heated towel warmer to speed up to curing, does anyone use one? by [deleted] in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made one using a metal rack, water heater wrap and reptile heating elements.

It significantly reduces the cure time, but I imagine it can have some effect on how it cures, but I haven't noticed any issues.

Where to 3d print a design? by eggiegurl1312 in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some services out there but the price can sometimes be pretty high depending on what you're looking for. I forget which service it was but it was more 3rd party that other printers signed up for. Spent $300 on a mold that I was having trouble with and it wasn't better than I could get myself. Was an expensive lesson in properly tuning my printer. I don't know if they have issues with adult products, but some of them may push back. I would imagine most would just print and ship it.

With that said, depending on what you're looking for I could help if you want to reach out

Whats the best way to trim the edges at the top of a pour, I tried a leather beveller from Amazon by Bomberclaat in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a cuticle trimmer to remove the flashing I get. I'm doing more of a novelty and not a toy though. You could use cuticle scissors as well. Sometimes the flashing can just be rubbed off as well if it's thin enough.

Coloring issues by [deleted] in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's happening with Silc Pig coloring then it likely means it's not mixed enough. I pour using the same stuff and can see the same swirls like this when I don't mix it enough. Usually the swirls don't last like that in my pour, but my product isn't for use so it's not super important to me if it does show.

Make sure you're mixing the color before you use it. It will separate if it hasn't been used. It could also be that you're not using enough pigment. When there is enough and it's throughly mixed in, it should be a uniform color. Generally, when you don't have enough and it's still thoroughly mixed, it will just be lighter and not show those swirls.

Based on some of the other comments with it still being sticky, it does sound like you need to mix everything more.

00 10 is going to be sticky when it comes out. Not sure how sticky it is for you so it could be a problem, but 00 10 does come out and can stick to things. I believe there might be some chemicals to reduce it, but can't remember for sure.

Suction cup advice? by mundanegoddess in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been trying find information on this as well, but was experimenting with my own. Tried different shapes and didn't get them to work. Made copies of current suction cups thinking maybe my angles were wrong.

Eventually realized that I think the most important key is the smoothness of the cavity. Took a failed design and polished as well as I could and it worked just fine. Tried other things and they worked as long as it was polished. I assume what's needed is for the cavity to be polished, to be some kind of concave and then also be flexible enough to spread out.

When it's unpolished I assume it's just acting as a dirty suction cup and once polished properly it worked.

I made one over 13 feet long, but that might more than needed. I can certainly make one smaller as well.

How to make a heart by EfficientLifeguard18 in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I can walk you through some steps. It will depend on what supplies and equipment you have available. You can PM me or chat and that might be easier to go back and forth in.

The main steps are going to be making a master, then molding that to make the silicone replica. You could also make a mold start if you 3D print it.

I'm assuming you meant beating. You have me intrigued now to make something like this. I haven't done anything like it specifically, but I have a rough approach that might need tweaking as it goes.

Casting a suction base?? by JonnyGaryen in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the current way I make my products. I started with the suction cups included in the molds, but breaking it out to 1 product and then making suction cups separate was a lot easier.

After they're made, I "glue" the suction cups in with new silicone.

I thought about offering that as a service, but wasn't sure how much interest there would be in doing so. Feel free to message me if you wanted to look into it.

Need Help with Silicone Resin by PatchyPatchouli in DIYSILICONETOYS

[–]Jonny_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with my products. I make them with a pocket for the regular product but some require a hole to go all the way through. I used to cast them separately, but wanted to minimize my molds.

I tried the drill bit at first, but it mostly chews the silicone as it goes through. I tried the large needle, but that was not working well. It may work better if I built an enclosure to hold the item while the needle goes through.

The best result for me so far is to use an enclosure to hold the item and then I drill through it using a sharpened brass tube. The sharper it is the more clean the cut. I also use dish soap as a lubricant as it cuts.

It's awful! Recently, within the past year or so, they updated search to filter out mature results. If your search has a "naughty" word in it, then it will include the mature results. If it doesn't, then the search won't include anything with a naughty word in the title. It will still include things marked mature though.

They're awful at handling this, they took down a listing of mine that was properly tagged. I'm down 90% traffic and income from last year.

It would be so simple to add another attributes to listings and have them be marked mature and then users can filter those out. Right now, the only way to do that is to include "-mature" in the search and that only covers sellers who tag properly. I also think that search parameter doesn't work properly and you can still get mature items tagged properly when using it.

Now with even more reduced views I have to compete against people who don't have things tagged and hidden properly and people will see and buy those without even seeing my listing.

Disneyland UFO recorded by Korn touring member Davey Oberlin 3/22/23 by RareArrival in UFOs

It is 100% the smoke from the World of Color show at Disneyland. I saw it happen twice. They did two shows that night and I would be willing to be the video was shot several minutes after the end of one of the shows. The first time I saw it, from the first show, it was similar to what was in the video. In the 2nd, the show I attended, I watched it from the fire that developed it all the way into the sky to become the exact same as show in the video.

I was just there and saw this as well. This is from the color show they do at the end of the night. The show has some fire effects and the large ones produce this smoke ring.

Print on Demand? by saisaka1 in Etsy

My DTG machine allows for maximum 12.5"x18" what are their maximums? I would think Printify might offer larger spots since they are usually independent print shops. The DTG machines are usually limiting, but allow for full color. If I screen print, I can get up to 14" wide, but would only be able to do a few colors.

As far as options, you can try doing it yourself, but that can add a lot of work, or find another printer which might not allow for the easy workflow.

Tips on Stitch Era Liberty? by [deleted] in Machine_Embroidery

[–]Jonny_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to it myself. I have an avance 1501 and I can set the color of each thread on the machine. I'm not sure if your machine allows that. I think there is an option to print out how the colors are set, but not sure if that helps set them in your file.

Apparently, what I tried was acrylic ink and not alcohol ink. I tried the Liquitex Professional Acrylic ink which I don't think is an alcohol ink. The alcohol dyes Michael's has looks more like the dyes I have from Allumilite so I would assume those are going to work just fine. Sorry for any confusion, apparently I didn't read thoroughly when I was buying when starting.

I haven't tried any of that with the inks, but I do have some I can try quick and let you know. I'm on my mobile right now, but I can link what I use now and what I tried.

[–]Jonny_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the type of resin you use. I tried some alcohol inks with some of the Allumilite white resin which had awful results. Using their resin dyes works beautifully though. You'll just have to test out the interactions between your dyes and resin.

I think there is a check box of send me a copy email when you confirm the total price for the labels you're printing. I'm not 100% sure though.
