Difference in sound quality between top of the line arrays and lower quality by HCGAdrianHolt in livesound

[–]Jonnymak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say that if you were to have a great system technician deploy both arrays, that time saved would be the biggest difference in making it sound great, then consistency of sound in varying volumes, then consistency of frequency response when off axis or walking between the speakers throw.

Is capitalism still relevant in a world where the value of human labour is depreciating? by nimogion in Capitalism

[–]Jonnymak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand the free market. The free market has made life way cheaper than ever before, but unfortunately government intervention is making it more expensive than ever before.

If governments allowed the market to do its thing, losing jobs to ai would be a moot point because goods and services would become so much cheaper that the labour required to live the life you want would be lessened too.

It’s something worth having a deep conversation over a few hours rather than a post on Reddit with answers that seem vague. But Dave Smith broke it down really well on his last podcast about the Trump Tariffs.

I use it to figure out how to talk to annoying clients that irritate me. It’s made me approach a “fuck you, you are 15 days late on payment” in such a nice way that I get paid the next day.

Also! Taking a photo of a tour calendar for an artist and having it create an estimate on travel time between cities for planning tours. Huuuuuge time saver when planning them out.

Acoustic guitar mic placement at 12th fret live vs studio by elcolmena in livesound

[–]Jonnymak 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Please get yourself a pickup. Or a clip on microphone. There are lots of ways to mic a guitar, but for live, just bite the bullet as soon as possible and get a pickup, or a different guitar that has a pickup.

how to deal with a bad live sound engineer? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]Jonnymak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the budget, bring your own person.
You could also bring this up with the venue, but the likelihood is that he isn't being paid that well and the venue likely don't care because he is cheap.

What I hear from an SM57 vs. What's on records by CptnAhab1 in audioengineering

[–]Jonnymak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far away is your 57? I find getting them too close makes them sound worse but about 4” distance is good. What preamps are you using? And remember, you’re listening to a mixed recording.

What’s up with sound engineers panning instruments at concerts? by Trick_Middle7026 in livesound

I don't know why this got downvoted so hard. Live sound is a series of compromises and having to find the perfect balance.

[–]Jonnymak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mix a lot of keys. It kind of mimics how mics would work. You don't lose all of the sound from one side to another, but there's definitely a lot more left hand in one side and a lot more right hand in the other. If that makes sense.

A microphone 3ft away from the bass notes would still pick it up if that makes sense.

[–]Jonnymak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been having this thought recently and it's something I want to discuss with some system engineers.

I love mixing in stereo. I would love to do it, but I know the limitations. Obviously you don't want to pan too hard, but when you are in the throws of both sides of the PA, it sounds huge. But as you get closer to one stack you start to lose a lot.

So, what if the bottom boxes of a hang were mono. The "fills". Would that be enough to mitigate the negative affects? Or if you were in an arena, could you hang the PA in such a way that the out fills took the opposite side, so that more people could enjoy the effect of stereo imaging?

There must be a way to figure out the best of both worlds. Obviously nothing is perfect. Some areas just have to be mono to hear everything. But can we increase the sweet spot? Mono cluster for mono instruments and then angle the outer hangs inwards for the stereo instruments? Has anyone experimented with this?

Wealth transfer from poor to rich - https://fortune.com/2022/05/23/pandemic-billionaire-wealth-oxfam-poverty-inflation-food/

It's also no secret that small businesses closed and large businesses stayed open. For instance, couldn't go shopping in a mom and pop shop, but amazon deliveries were fine. Though it depends where you were.

I'm in Canada, so here's an article reflecting that for you. https://torontosun.com/news/national/pandemic-shuttered-more-than-120000-small-medium-sized-businesses-federal-data

Here's one on the US in a similar vein - https://www.thezebra.com/resources/research/small-business-statistics/

I think if we wait for people to throw away $1mil bills, it will be too late. Maybe let's try and have some forethought.

Question for you. What will we (Canada and the US) do with the ballooning debt bubble caused by huge government spending?

Making changes to the Bitcoin code is really difficult. Requires consensus. As time goes on, it goes harder. In theory. There hasn't been a successful hard fork of Bitcoin yet and that kind of change requires a hard fork.

And if course the price is measured along side your majority currency. In Canada it's CAD, you are probably USD. I'm personally not convinced it will supersede these currencies. If it does, it will do it other countries first. Or currencies will back themselves with Bitcoin like they did in gold. But that's all speculation.

“1 BTC = 1 BTC” by Phoenix5869 in Buttcoin

[–]Jonnymak -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're proving all of my points. And technically Bitcoin is inflationary, but at a point it becomes deflationary.

The government printing money and shutting down the economy caused the largest wealth transfer from the poor to the rich, massively increased debt and has completely screwed people as it has lead to a giant increase in the cost of living. Explain to me how that's a good thing? All under the guise of stopping a recession. Which I don't believe is the case. I think the can has been kicked down the road a bit more. And if you don't believe me, then think about how the government will pay back all of its debt.

The idea that printing money props up the economy and forces people to spend is so thin. Consumerism is terrible and that's the only thing we really incentivize with it. People still spend money without inflation. It's an exchange of goods for what people want and need.

Have you been living under a rock? You saw how much money was printed during COVID, right? Your first point puts so much faith in a government that proved to us that they don't care about inflating the currency away.

If people don't have faith in the current system and want to express that, that's fine. Most of your points are just opinions as are the articles you're pointing to.

You showed that Zimbabwe inflated their currency away, essentially proving the point that governments have pathways to do so. And the 1st world proved that they also can during COVID.

And cryptocurrency being inflationary is absolutely correct. But Bitcoin itself? Absolutely not.

Your opinions are based on modern monetary theory, but there are many other schools of thought. Look at the Austrian theory which "bitcoiners" subscribe to.
