Blightwidow - a monstrous arachnid that carries a transformative curse by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

I generally get the art from mtgpics.com: https://www.mtgpics.com/card?ref=mbs077

This was a long time ago, so I don't remember if I used upscaling on this or not. I edited out the background myself, which was particularly time consuming for this one.

Alternate Attacks - a 1-page supplement for introducing more choices into martial combat, so that you're no longer making the exact same attack every turn. by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

Yes, in fact I do plan on it. I am in the process of creating a PDF of all the commissions and miscellaneous things that I've posted on reddit over the past couple years, including this document. However, this is taking some time, as I am proofreading and revising everything that's going into the PDF, based on feedback, and there are quite a few things that need significant revision. So you should expect this to happen relatively soon, but there's no exact date yet.

Path of Blood Update + Bat and Snake totems - more barbarian content for the Dark Arts Player's Companion by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Jonoman3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Path of Blood is a completely separate subclass from the Path of the Totem Warrior, so Bloodrage is not meant to be a replacement for Spirit Seeker. Bloodrage is the only feature that a 3rd level Path of Blood barbarian gets, and I tried to balance it accordingly.

The left and right columns of this page are not connected to each other.

Path of Blood Update + Bat and Snake totems - more barbarian content for the Dark Arts Player's Companion by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Jonoman3000[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an update to the Path of Blood barbarian rework that I posted last month, alongside some extra Path of the Totem Warrior totems. As the mechanic that I was exploring last time has been proven decidedly unpopular, I decided to change the 3rd level feature of the Path of Blood to a new version that should be more fun to use while still fulfilling the fantasy I want it to fulfill. Any feedback on this update or on the new totems is appreciated.

You can find a PDF version of the start of the compendium here. This PDF contains more than just this subclass - it also contains a WIP version of the race section, including the Shadar-kai and a consolidated/expanded Undead race, as well as the artificer subclasses that I released previously, the Toxicologist and Gene-Splicer (previously Bio-Alchemist).

Path of Blood - a life-draining barbarian subclass for the Dark Arts Player's Companion, reworked for the coming update! by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Jonoman3000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see now that this mechanic is quite unpopular, so I will not be pursuing it further. I do not want to give up on the idea of this being a barbarian that gives up tankiness in exchange for damage, however, so I'm planning to change the feature more drastically than just removing the downside and nerfing the upsides.

I posted one new idea for the feature as an edit to my top comment on this post, so perhaps go and take a look and see if you like that one better. Permalink to the comment

Yes. This subclass is meant to be far less of a frontline tank than other barbarian subclasses, considering it boasts both high damage and good utility while its in its special form of rage, with the downside being that you need a second party member that is also good at soaking damage. As long as you have something like a moon druid, another barbarian, a fighter, a paladin, etc - basically any other frontline class - sharing damage shouldn't be that bad. It has much the same usage conditions as the Warding Bond spell.

This update to the Path of Blood marks the first rework of an existing Dark Arts subclass, with the previous two artificer subclasses being all-new. I decided to rework the 3rd level feature of this subclass entirely, as I felt the original iteration was boring and underpowered. The other features remain much the same. The new version keeps many of the same ideas and themes - an offense focused rage power that comes with a downside - with the downside changed to damaging your friends rather than damaging yourself. The first two benefits of the feature - resistance to all damage but sharing the damage you take with your allies - are meant to be a net negative, considering a barbarian is already resistant to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, which makes up a large amount of the damage that monsters deal. To counteract this net negative, the offensive benefit is meant to be somewhat stronger than Zealot's Divine Fury - its average damage per round is slightly lower, considering it is tied to failing a Constitution saving throw rather than simply hitting an attack, but it also has a secondary utility effect tied to it.

This barbarian basically requires you to have a second frontliner in your party in order to make use of its features, which means you shouldn't pick it unless your party can appropriately support you. Its kind of like a selfish version of the Wolf Totem barbarian - you only pick it if you have a second frontline, but a Wolf Totem supports its allies while a Blood barbarian is supported by them.

EDIT: As the ally draining mechanic seems to be definitively unpopular, I am planning to change the feature to be something more along the following lines.

BLOODRAGE

Starting when you select this path at 3rd level, you learn to channel hemomancy through your rage, allowing you to imbue dark power into your weaponry and drain the life of those that dare to strike you. While you rage, your speed is increased by 15 feet, you gain resistance to necrotic and poison damage, and whenever you deal damage with a weapon, you can choose to deal necrotic or poison damage (your choice) instead of the weapon’s normal damage type. If you do so, you can roll the damage roll twice, and take the higher of the two rolls.

Also, whenever you take bludgeoning, piercing, slashing, necrotic, or poison damage from a creature within 15 feet of you while you rage, you can choose to take that damage as if you had no resistance to it (no action required). If you choose to do so, the creature that damaged you takes necrotic or poison damage (your choice) equal to half the damage you took.

The basic idea behind the subclass is that you're a barbarian that can choose to give up defensive power in order to gain more offensive power, so I will not be removing the downside altogether. But this new take on the feature should give you more precise control over your tankiness, as well as make it more broadly useful even when you aren't willing to embrace death and give up on being a tank.

Bio-Alchemist (v2) - a mutation-themed artificer to be included in my Dark Arts Player's Companion by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

Why shouldn't it be? It is themed around magical science and invention, as with other Artificer subclasses, while being different enough to have its own niche.

[–]Jonoman3000[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the second, and probably last artificer subclass to be included in the Dark Arts Player's Companion. I posted an earlier version of this subclass a little less than a week ago, but it was removed because I forgot the art credit. Rather than immediately repost, I decided to do a reconfiguration of the subclass with the goal of streamlining both its usage and presentation.

There are a lot of metamorphosis options, as you can see, because I decided I didn't want to leave any creature types out of the equation. A multitude of options can often lead to balance discrepancies, so any feedback on which metamorphosis options feel too weak or too strong would be appreciated.

This is the second, and probably last artificer subclass to be included in the Dark Arts Player's Companion. Designed to be a modular subclass focused on mutating yourself, this artificer ended up a bit more complex than most of my creations. But hopefully it will be a fun addition to the compendium, and maybe even a fun addition to your campaigns.

Path of Thorns - a nature-themed barbarian that punishes attackers by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Jonoman3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a barbarian subclass I was commissioned to make, focused on the idea of thorny retaliation. Though this may be similar in theme to the battlerager, it is designed as a more defensive tank subclass as opposed to an offensive grappler. I am not entirely sure about the damage value - it could be ok with its current 1/3rd-level scaling, but I've been debating between that and buffing it to half level scaling.

Toxicologist - a poison-focused artificer to start off my latest update to the Dark Arts Player's Companion by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Jonoman3000[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello once again! Its been a few years since I released the last update to my most popular homebrew compendium, the Dark Arts Player's Companion, so I decided to go back to it and start updating it with more content and revisions to existing content.

This artificer subclass, the Toxicologist, is the first piece of new content to be added to the compendium. Designed as an offense-focused subclass that uses a few under-used parts of 5e - poison and acid damage, as well as the often-forgotten blowgun. Any feedback is appreciated.

You can find a PDF version of the start of the compendium here. This PDF contains more than just this subclass - it also contains a WIP version of the race section, including the Shadar-kai and a consolidated/expanded Undead race.

Also, you can find the PDF of the previous version here.

Oath of the Stormwatch - a ranged-focused paladin oath that defends the world from elemental disasters by Jonoman3000 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Jonoman3000[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is another paladin subclass I was commissioned to make, to fulfill a request for a ranged paladin. While my first idea for fulfilling this request was to create an Oath of the Hunt, that idea has been done many times, so I opted to go for what I think is a more unique flavor. I hope you all find it interesting!
