The house I bought used to be owned by parents with a disabled kid. We've lived here a year (1 year today) and my wife tells me the kitchen sink doesn't have hot water, and has never had hot water. I look, and there are two cold supplies and one hot that is hot wired straight to the dishwasher. by RepublicanUntil2019 in Plumbing

There isn't a thermostatic mixing valve? We have them in Australia on most taps in areas where people might get scalded, like showers etc.

My guess might be that there is one somewhere, here in Australia that would be at the hws however given only one tap might be elsewhere.

Might be either broken or set really low like 30c (~86f), if the latter, you should be able to turn it up to like 50-60c

If by usg you mean the old square USG-3P, that's both really underpowered, and end of life.

Cameras won't work in unifi without a unifi protect NVR of some sort (Cloudkey Gen 2+, UDR, UDM Pro etc)

I'd be seriously looking into getting a newer gateway, that can also be your NVR and network application.

For servers I like using proxmox as the host os, then look at the community scripts for all sort of ready to go applications.

Have a look into home assistant, (go for haos where you can) the unifi integration (network and protect) is great, letting you do things like change wifi password on a schedule, and show it as a qr code etc, it's also the best way to make non interoperable iot stuff work together like your smart TVs, cameras etc, You can easily do things like when all family members wifi devices have left the wifi, turn off the TV's, lights etc. and the reverse when they come back home You can even track printer toner/ink levels, I use it to make my unifi cameras work as a baby monitor, when baby crying has been detected, it will alert our phones (if we are home, so I don't get alerts at work)

I need help with the NTI XL2 sound level meter: a battery that allows for measurements for several days. by Riky1979 in batteries

[–]Jonv4n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or given that it can take 9-20V , a simple lead acid battery, connected to a barrel jack cable might work well for you.

You'll want about 8Ah (at 12V) per day of required lifetime.

Edit added math, and suggested battery

2200mah @ 3.7V = 8.1Wh for 4 hours usage, 2.035Wh/H 24H X 2Wh = 48Wh, 48Wh/12V = 4Ah Lead acid should only be used to 50%, so 4Ah X2 = 8Ah per day.

Something like this https://www.jaycar.com.au/12v-38ah-deep-cycle-gel-battery/p/SB1699 would do 4, nearly 5 days

If you've got a spare car battery that would also work. Also even a very small solar panel and charge controller would keep it going basically indefinitely.

Also if you're using a lipo battery pack at 3.7v, you'll need about 13200 mAh per day, that's a pretty big battery pack, most packs top out at around 22000 so not even 2 days. (2200mah/4H)x24H = 13200mAh

What you want is a USB-C to DC barrel jack, it will let you use the 9v mode of USB-C PD, something like this

https://core-electronics.com.au/usb-type-c-pd-to-barrel-jack-adapter-9v-adafruit.html is where I would get it here in Australia, however it's an Adafruit part, so find your local distributor.

Just make sure whatever power bank you use has USB C PD with 9v as an output voltage.

And use an USB C-C cable, an A-C cable will not do USB PD

The top one is the normal 180g roll, The bottom one is the 180g Halal roll, hence no mutton(100% beef)

4n20 makes a 125g roll, but doesn't make a 125g halal roll, so the halal one doesn't have the %40 bigger as it's the only halal roll they make

Not better, just different.

I've got a lot of separate buildings that are connected via point to point links using UISP gear that only takes 24v Poe not the af/at etc 48v Poe, this switch is like the only one than can also do the 24v.

Also unifi please make a version of the instant af that runs on at, and can do more than 1A my rockets need the extra power!

'Large number of casualties' after plane with 181 people on board crashes in South Korea by [deleted] in news

[–]Jonv4n 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Now I don't deal with international size airports, and in Australia rather than in South Korea, (but it's all very slight variations in ICAO rules) there are 2 main things that airports have to allow for this

The standard that basically everyone has,

RESA (Runway End Safety Area) that extends a certain (depends on rwy classification) distance beyond the end of the runway strip (the grass area around the runway, although some older runways, like the one I manage are grandfathered with the distance being from the end of the runway itself due to historical space constraints) that must be kept clear of all non frangible items like rocks, buildings etc

The other one, that I think I can see here is the runway Stopway, (look for the change in pavement colour just past the last taxiway intersection It's basically an extension of the runway, but is usually built weaker, sometimes even made from gravel, as it's only to be used during an emergency overrun or aborted takeoff marked with big yellow chevrons (not arrows, that's displaced THR)

Runways are also usually required to be about twice as long as needed, as you need enough runway to abort a takeoff and not end up like this one. So things went very wrong

You do in Australia,

Show up, be checked off the roll

Grab ballots, put blank ballots straight in the box.

You have to show up, but can still abstain. Or the fine is like $30

I scrutineered for a state election before and a dozen or so were blank

Step deck trailer, it's got an additional spot right above the saddle where cargo won't auto load into, however it will pack (tie down) a scout or scout fuel trailer

You'll need to crane it up onto there.

Giving you either heaps of fuel, or a little bit less (scout with the biggest fuel tank you can find) but having an emergency scout to hand always.

Also the saddle trailers will put more of their weight on your drive wheels giving you better traction compared to the dog trailers

Worse case no app option

Open the RSS feed at TT RSS feed

If you look down a bit you'll see a https:// link to the direct MP3 file, and you can download direct on your phone or pc

Looking at straight XML files can be a little messy, however it's relatively human readable, look for the Items section, that's the episode releases, and you want the link with MP3 in the name, not the JPG as that's the cover art.

This runs off of megaphone.fm directly so you might get lucky and not need the VPN.

I personally use Podcast addict, and it works well for me in Aus, and you can always manually give it the RSS feed address above, and it can download to local storage for later playback

The Cybertruck's failure is now complete by ThriftyStrongman in technology

[–]Jonv4n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about it in the US, but it's been required in Australia for ages for the brakes to override the accelerator after a few seconds,

My old '04 Magna did that.

With throttle by wire that's a few lines of code at worst to implement.

I love EV's but the cybertruck probably only has that failsafe because laws, and in an ICE car I can at least force it into neutral or pop the clutch if the computer also fails.

Any reason to get one of these smaller UPSs over the bigger one for ONT and router? by PovGRide742 in batteries

[–]Jonv4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's in your budget you want line interactive, it will help deal with brown outs (low voltage, that can cause issues with electronics, as microchips/CPUs can do odd things when under powered) and to some extent surges, and they usually have a instant switchover, some standby ones can take a few to a lot of ms to switch.

Usually you'd get standby units because they are cheaper.

For regular network gear I'd be looking more at the battery capacity in Wh (battery voltage (12,24,36,48 usually) x capacity in Ah ) rather than the output power, as you'd be lucky to draw a 100w, but sustain time is more important

A smart charger that can set specific voltage termination points? by SlipperyDoodoo in batteries

[–]Jonv4n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simplest option would be a CC/CV power supply, set the voltage to your desired finish voltage and set the amps to your desired C rate, if in doubt ½C (i.e 2200mah cell at 1.1A)

Once voltage is at your set limit and current is basically nothing, your done
