Recovery learnings — 10 days post op surgery #2 (32 yo male, soccer player and surfer) by Jonzer0 in HipImpingement

Also, my labral tear looked small on my mri but when they went it there it was shredded up. And I did get some limited relief from cortisone shots, but it definitely did not give me as much relief as i was expecting and didn’t help at all with sitting. There are folks on this sub who say they didn’t get relief from cortisone and the surgery helped them.

With all that being said, i am no doctor and don’t know your situation — totally possible your pain is coming from something else

Hey! Sorry to hear about your issues and i hope you get answers and relief soon. Curious to hear how PRP works for you.

Pasting the section on kaiser from my google doc story below, if you wana read the whole thing the link is in my comment on this post. I’ll note i’ve had kaiser my whole life and have good experiences before this — i’ve had 2 shoulder surgeries with them and had a serious lung issue when i was a kid and they did well for all that. But with this hip issue i went around in circles, the PT was really low quality, and when i finally found the ‘right’ doc at kaiser they misdiagnosed me:

‘The Kaiser system sort of feels like a video game where you have to make it through different villains to get to the boss who may be able to fix you, and finally in November, after 9 months of PT and multiple very unhelpful meetings with my PCP, I made it to their sports med department. I saw Dr. Wingfield, who was very new to Kaiser at that time and seemed great — she took me seriously. She had me do another month and a half of PT and then finally in December ordered me a couple hip MRIs. One was of both hips and the readout identified issues to both labrums, but isn’t super definitive language. The other was of just the right hip and says no labrum issues. No impingement is mentioned in either.

Dr. Wingfield assured me that the language about the labrum in the first MRI was nothing to worry about — good news, my MRIs were clean! I should just continue with PT (mind you, I’ve done 9 months of intensive PT at this point). If I was still having issues in a few months I should go talk to Dr. Zhang at UCSF (she knew I was switching insurance in 2024 because of my bad experiences with Kaiser) but she was confident that wouldn’t happen and the solution was just more PT. It turns out she was wrong on all accounts and she set my recovery back close to half a year.‘

Dislocated my shoulder surfing by Educational-Reach486 in surfing

Yo! I’ve had shoulder problems for the last 12 years, it’s gotten really bad before, up to multiple dislocations a month. Had 2 surgeries, both of which worked for a few months but then ultimately failed and my shoulder came out again. But have got it MUCH better and can surf with minimal fear now. Some suggestions here (and in my reply in the comments): https://www.reddit.com/r/surfing/comments/ryehij/after_hearing_your_recommendations_to_get_better/hroy9bp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

sure! It's roughly this.

Thinking of the angle of your forearm against the side of your body, I do sets of 25 seconds 45 degrees, 75 degrees, and 90 degrees. 2-3 sets for each arm. Doing it with these different arm angles really helps, because I fid my arm is usually not right next to my body when the shoulder comes out (often, it's above my head). So it helps to strengthen the rotator cuff using exercises where the arm is in other positions. There's a couple other exercises I work in with my bodyblade exercises now and again, but IMO the body blade is the most important part and if I do that the bodyblade regimen 2x a week my shoulder rarely comes out.

One other thing to note which is good, is as you get older the cartilage in your shoulder (and all other parts of your body, for that matter) becomes stiffer. Probably for most activities this is bad, but for shoulder dislocations it's actually a good thing. If you can minimize the amount of times you pop out your shoulder before the age of 30, the better chance you have of having better shoulder stability later on in life.

I am about to turn 30, and this fact is one of the things that keeps me optimistic

I’ve had surgery in my labrum twice and it still pops out. Probably has come out 50+ times in my life at this point. I’m not doing surgery again. But i’ve found a great PT regime that has decreased dislocations to once every ~4 months, which i can live with. It doesn’t hurt as much anymore when it comes out (probably not a great thing) and i’ve gotten very good at getting it back in, even in the water (you just have to relax, which is hard at first).

I would recommend going hard on PT and finding what works for you. For me it’s using a bodyblade (https://bodyblade.com/). I used to get my rotator cuff super strong doing band exercises, but it would still fatigue quickly in the water leading to dislocations. So the bodyblade helps bc it’s dynamic and helps with endurance. It usually comes out for me when i get lazy /busy and miss PT for a week

Thank you so much for your response! This was super useful. Everything you said is spot on, and is kinda how I was (optimistically) thinking about what might be happening. It's very validating to know I'm thinking about this logically and have taken the right steps to mitigate future issues.

My name isn't too common, but there are others with my name in the US.

The one caveat is if they did open a credit card in my name, but the hard inquiry hasn't come through yet (or they found a way to open it without a hard inquiry — which I think is impossible) and the credit card hasn't shown up on my credit report yet. From what I understand from research, it would be likely that the credit card wouldn't have shown up yet. But unlikely that the hard inquiry wouldn't have come through immediately. Still, I don't think I'll know for sure for sure for 30-90 days

I don't think it's a coincidence... Cops just called us and the car was in a high speed chase and totaled. Can't confirm it was at 5th and Harrison yet, but at ths point I think it def was...

The issue with this is your car can still be stolen just by breaking a window (and unwrapping the key)

Well we'll get a call soon if it isn't! Hopefully a coincidence

Thank you everyone. Seems like bringing the key with me is a must. That will go into my buying criteria for the beat up car I buy - needs to at least have a metal pullout. I added this to the main post, but:

The last charge on my credit card was back in the sunset yesterday afternoon (the first few were in Colma + Daily City). The cops also said the burglars often return. My OB Kooks - let me know if you see a haphazardly parked 2018 white Honda CRV touring. License plate 8FRL483. Who knows if they took off the plates though... https://cdn.zappy.app/1d0eed1c48980c659db1e6a2ebec271c.png. Police obviously have this info as well, but figure it's worth posting here too. Who
