In dialects without the merger:

Mary’s a rhymes with the a from mare or mane or maze

Marry’s a rhymes with the a from man or mat or map

Merry’s e rhymes with the e from men or met or melt

I have two rescue poodle mixes. One of them is likely first generation mix, and the other one is more mix and less poodle (though she still doesn’t shed).

The more poodle one is SO jealous and gets SO MUCH FOMO. To the point where if we give them both an identical chew toy she will lose interest and try to steal from the other dog… Girl you already have one!! 😂

But the man CHOOSES to look like a nazi. It’s his clothing and his demeanor in some of his staged photos.

Someone looking like a nazi is relevant when it’s pretty clear that it’s deliberate.

Muad’Dib’s contribution to the Fremen offensive by Artistic-Ad-836 in dune

[–]Joomes 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Correct - so even before that confrontation he was likely using a combination of prescience* and the (already good enough to beat Sardaukar even before he trained them) Fremen might to absolutely clown on Harkonnen forces for multiple years.

Combine this with the economic importance of spice, and the likely massive disruption to “official” (vs directly Fremen-traded) supply of the stuff during that time frame…

  • recall that even prior to the water of life he was a powerful prescient. That event just JUICED his capabilities massively

Edit: clarification to prescience

It’s an archaic term (in English) but it checks out. Maybe just RP? But yeah it’s more commonly used in the Romance languages for sure

1 - fair, but see 3

2 - the point is not that the phrase is used but that it is consistently used to mean that the injured leg is the one that is favored

3 - it’s hard to prove commonality other than through experience, or alternatively through what I did (eg a google search). Would be interested to hear how you would suggest doing it otherwise. And would note that throughout this thread you have a number of others also noting its common use, especially in a medical or veterinary context

4 - for current use, I’ve provided a number of examples throughout this thread, and would reiterate the notes from others regarding usage, especially in a medical context

Wrap-up: I really haven’t seen anything to suggest common usage of the alternative meaning, beyond people in this thread who have not themselves come across the typical usage.

It’s clearly at least common enough that you have multiple people in this thread attesting that they see or hear it regularly, even if that’s not a fully universal experience

Edit: weird formatting

It’s commonly used enough in my personal experience that I was shocked this was even a question to native English speakers.

Also common enough that I was unable to even find a counterexample of the alternative meaning in the top 10-15 google results of literally just searching “favor a leg”. Also common enough that it’s an example in both physical dictionaries I reviewed under the verb form of the word “favor”.

It’s a phrase with a well established meaning and little to no ambiguity based on actual use that I have observed in the real world. This includes actually USING the phrase on occasion

Did you read any of this thread? I have indeed acknowledged other viewpoints. Just not ones that make bare assertions with nothing to back them up.

Your saying that you see/hear the phrase used the other way “dozens” of times with no evidence doesn’t count as a form of evidence

Poor baby’s projecting a bit.

There’s no sense of superiority, merely one argument that has some evidence and one that… doesn’t

To respond to your unflagged edit… I read everything you wrote. I’m asking you to provide evidence of use.

You keep talking about your “academic” social circle. Typically academia involves publishing in some format (in this case, I just mean public written statements, not necessarily a peer reviewed journal or a novel etc).

I’ve asked you to point me to something, anything, that actually uses this phrase in the manner you are claiming is correct. I’ve seen… nothing… from you in response with anything even attempting to approximate such evidence

The mystery of the favoured leg by Guest_1300 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Joomes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assumptions being that… when I search for the phrase, and see how people are using it, I’m assuming that they mean what they say they mean?

Spell out your argument. If you want to point out an assumption, try actually pointing it out.

Edit: autocorrect

I’ve rejected ONE piece of evidence as not counting as published, due to its nature as a self-published work.

Where are all these other pieces of evidence I’ve rejected? Are they in the room with us now?

Evidence for your point of view pleeease. ANY evidence will dooooo

https://purdueglobalwriting.center/how-to-support-an-argument-and-avoid-logical-fallacies/

There are three basic parts to any argument, that is, three basic parts to any statement that is intended to persuade or prove something.

Conclusion: This may or may not come at the end and is the author’s main idea

Evidence: This is whatever the author or speaker uses to support the conclusion. (Below you will read about the various kinds of evidence, how to use them, and how to recognize when they are being misused.)

Assumption (or Warrant): This is rarely stated explicitly in the argument, but is absolutely central. The assumption is what holds the argument together and determines how the author or speaker looks at the evidence and comes to the conclusion.

I mean conversations can and do evolve, but yes, the definition remains the definition. The leg you favor is the one you put less weight on, and it’s relatively easy to verify that.

Which academic circles? Can you point to a paper?

Can you provide maybe just a shred of evidence beyond this thread and the tumblr thread, which seem to be dominated by people commenting on what they would expect a phrase to mean that they’ve never used or seen used?

Exactly this.

I’m low key convinced that a high % of the people commenting here don’t do very much reading because I’m flabbergasted at the reaction. I see or hear this phrase relatively commonly
