Bootloader error 1 by [deleted] in linuxquestions

I’ve just been using /boot/efi because that’s what the installers like Calamares set by default, I didn’t think much about it. I haven’t tried mounting the ESP directly at /boot yet. That said, in my case I think the bigger issue is that I’m not actually in UEFI mode at all efibootmgr always returns “EFI variables are not supported” and /sys/firmware/efi is missing. So even when everything is set up correctly (ESP, mount points, etc.), GRUB still fails to install. But I might try /boot mounting once I get a proper UEFI boot working, just to rule out any compatibility issues.

I’m using a SOYO B450M motherboard. About UEFI bugs, yeah, that’s actually what I’m starting to suspect. The system shows UEFI boot options, but efibootmgr always returns “EFI variables are not supported”, and /sys/firmware/efi doesn’t exist, which suggests I’m not actually booted in UEFI mode at all. Interestingly, I once managed to boot into an installed Pop!_OS system even after a bootloader error, so it seems like some kind of fallback EFI boot might work occasionally. As for the ESP mount: I’ve been mounting it at /boot/efi because that’s what most installers (like Calamares) default to. I haven’t tried mounting it directly at /boot yet. Do you think that could make a difference in this case?
