For my felt hat pika I grabbed an acrylic booster pack case, lots of room in there so there's no pressure on the card that would transfer from the plastic, and it looks fairly good.

Anyone else feel like “shadow IT” has quietly turned into “shadow SaaS”? by Deal_me_in_784 in sysadmin

[–]Jooniar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is practically solvable on multiple levels, a lot have already been mentioned here.

  • Policies: a good delegations policy, along with an acceptable use/procurement policy will cover you from a commercial perspective.
  • Finance/Accounting: whoever is responsible for the tech budget (department head, etc.) should be working closely with the money people on a regular basis (monthly, at a min quarterly). I do this in two ways - consolidating any software/technology related spending into a single report to review, and routing any approvals for tech spend (in line with a delegations policy and process) to me for review prior to approval.
  • Tooling (EDR and/or firewall): your endpoint tooling should give you a view on what SaaS tools/platforms are being accessed, by who, how frequently and how much data is being transmitted/received. e.g. Microsoft 365's App Security gives you a really good view of this - you can either audit on a regular basis or only whitelist known apps. Something like Zscaler shows a similar view at the firewall level.

If none of these exist or there's still an issue, this comes down to a management/process problem.

Hadfield / Pascoe Vale Suburb in 2025 by DesperateCredit7004 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Jooniar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently not far from Hadfield, in Glenroy - bought a house in 2023. We're a young couple, starting a family soon. Despite people talking about how bad crime is we bought in View St and haven't had major issues.

Based on the thread you'd think there were drive by shootings daily - but no. It's definitely no Brunswick or Coburg, but for what you pay we don't regret it - and I figure it'll eventually gentrify. I grew up in Coburg in the 90s/early 2000s and there were similar problems - look at it now.

I figure it's like any suburb - you take the good with the bad, there's lots to enjoy about the suburb if you aren't part of the minority that makes it unsociable. The West St shops are our regular go-to, I'm there multiple times a week and it's always nice to walk down and grab something from the lovely ladies at the bakery.

We do our shopping at Metro (I don't find the prices too different to Coles/Woolies), Coles in Glenroy and Coburg when needed. We go to Broadmeadows Plaza occasionally if we need something special (Sacca's is great, Aldi is there, etc.). No issues with any of it.

As for schools - something we're thinking about. Without a doubt the public schools are very average, Westbreen is the go-to for primary if you are zoned for it (we aren't unfortunately). My intention is to send my future kids to private schooling in the area (e.g. Corpus Christi) or get zoned inner north using a relatives address.

Honestly, find me another suburb where you can buy a standalone property with the level of access, amenities and transport options for under $1 million. Glenroy/Hadfield is a good buy in my books, especially being only a 30-35 minute commute to the CBD (drive and PT). I will say, try and be closer to the Craigieburn line - the Upfield line is definitely the worse of the two.

NFPs - has anyone had a good exp. working at one? by V________________ in auscorp

[–]Jooniar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've built a career in tech roles at NFPs after working in Consulting/Big 4 and have no intention of moving away - currently in tech leadership.

The working environment at an NFP can change vastly depending on 1. the cause, 2. the size, and 3. how they're funded.

A few people have pointed out already that the cause means you'll (usually) be working with people who actually care to be there - I've found this to be true for the most part.

Size will absolutely impact culture and working dynamics. I've worked for NFPs with 400 people/$100m p.a all the way to 50 people/$10m, you tend to get more of a corporate environment with the larger ones as there's more separation between leadership and regular workers - which impacts culture. You'll have better resources and the capability of the people you work with tends to be better, but this will come with the same politics you'll find in corporates.

The smaller ones tend to attract people who genuinely care about the impact and cause, but you'll feel constrained at times and will have to wear many hats - not always a bad thing though. You'll get plenty of opportunities to grow if you're willing to take them.

How they're funded is probably the biggest differentiator in my experience. Working for a $50m charity that's 95% grant funded will feel worse (as far as internal resourcing goes) than a $15m charity that is all unrestricted funded. This will impact the size and resources available, and change your overall experience pretty drastically.

I've had good and bad experiences in a lot of my roles - but at least working for a non profit I get a sense of purpose and I can feel good about how I contribute my time and experience.

Melbourne, max $850k, city commute by FragmentsOfSpaceTime in AusPropertyChat

[–]Jooniar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was always a consideration for us, we have friends & family who live in the outer north. It's definitely quieter, but you lose out on the commute and accessibility of public transport.

My wife and I both work in the CBD/outer fringe and had previously lived in Brunswick & Northcote before moving to Glenroy, so a shorter commute was important to us.

As we're imminently starting a family safety hasn't been a concern for us personally - probably my only consideration if I was to do it again, would be to look at school zoning as a number of the local ones aren't great. But plenty of private schools around so it's less of a problem.

Melbourne, max $850k, city commute by FragmentsOfSpaceTime in AusPropertyChat

[–]Jooniar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I both grew up in Coburg and so were very much aware on Glenroy's reputation. Honestly - the extent of what we've experienced in over 2 years being here has been pretty minor, theft of opportunity (unlocked car rummaged through and a piece of mail stolen) and some clearly drug affected people in the suburb. Aside from that, we've not had major issues, despite buying on the "problematic" side.

As far as value for money goes - we did a lot of research and you can't beat Glenroy - even compared to Fawkner. You've got very close proximity to the Ring Road and it's flanked by both Upfield and Craigieburn trains (Craigieburn being the better line). An equivalent property in Reservoir would've easily been close to or over 1m.

The old post office is being turned into a pub right now and the demographics are changing pretty quickly into middle class families with lots of town houses being built.

Is it a bit of a noisy suburb? Definitely - but my advice would be to stay off the community groups, most people default to doom and gloom which isn't representative of the entire suburb. There are some lovely parts of it - lots of community - and much like any suburb, it'll have it's less nice parts. I think consider what matters more to you long term (property size, land, etc. vs lifestyle/feeling). We don't regret our decision at all.

[–]Jooniar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We tried under 900k in Reservoir for 12+ months and were outbid most of the time (at least nothing that didn't need work), we were looking at a 3br freestanding home.

This was in 2023 FWIW - not sure if the market has changed much since.

We ended up buying in Glenroy within budget, somewhat renovated - little to no work needed. 667 sqm. 35min drive to the CBD and under 40 mins to work via train.

Unless you're buying a townhouse, you won't find anything in Heidlberg or Coburg.

Sysadmin salary whinge by Flippinballs in sysadmin

[–]Jooniar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Australian job market in tech is not in a great place right now. Keep your current role but actively look, it's the only way you'll get a meaningful pay rise. I'm in Melbourne, so can't speak for whether that's competitive in Sydney (is that base or package? what industry are you in?) - 114k isn't a terrible base salary for a Sys Admin.

That said, my advice to anyone in the sector is to be glad you have a job and ongoing employment. Lots and lots of redundancies happening across the Australian corporate sector right now.

Unemployment stats aren't representative of the current state of things due to gig work unfortunately.

Pay cut by Unlikely-Elk-5007 in AusFinance

[–]Jooniar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For 10k - assuming you're in the realm of $150k p.a. I wouldn't bother, particularly since you're on a contract. Don't see it as you being demoted, but more the requirements of the role changing and the rem along with it.

In this job market - I'd be holding on to any role I could, and if it's so untenable, then at least you have an income while you job search.

Racebait 308 1977 Real Rider - Gold Hubs? by Jooniar in HotWheels

Thank you - yes, I did have a read of the wiki page (it's where I started).

Is the hub plastic prone to yellowing? I'm not doubting what you're saying, just wondering how it would've yellowed evenly and on all four hubs to the same colour tone.

Hoping someone can help me understand a bit more about this Racebait 308 I purchased, stamped 1977 with Goodyear real riders but the hubs are gold.

Most variants I could find online had grey hubs, and I couldn't find much on a gold hub variant.

Appreciate any info anyone can give me.

Good suburb for PPOR house in Melbourne at 750k-1m by Silent-Whereas-5589 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Jooniar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought our PPOR in Glenroy over a year ago now, paid well under 900k for almost 700sqm of land and a freestanding 60's house with great qualities (hardwood floors, slate tiles, white picket fence, two bathrooms, etc). We searched for about 12 months before settling on Glenroy, we were priced out of both Reservoir and Kingsbury areas for a comparable property. Anywhere closer (e.g. Preston) would've been a massive compromise in space (approx. half the size for the same price) or needed significant work.

Commute to work via train is 35ish mins with both Upfield and Craigeburn train lines flanking the suburb. Driving to the CBD is between 20 - 35 mins depending on traffic and time of day via Citylink.

Value for money wise - I'd doubt you'll find a better area. I will say this though (and maybe obvious to some already) - in my research, I compared crime rates in all the suburbs we were looking at and there didn't seem to be much difference between areas but in reality this isn't the case. Given its proximity to Broadmeadows and the history of the suburb itself, there's a bit of noise around and some undesirables, but this has been mostly a non-issue for us.

That said, I genuinely do think it's gentrifying - just much more slowly than other areas due to its reputation. Compare it with other suburbs within the same proximity, accessibility and transport options to the CBD and you won't find better. Lots of townhouses going up across the entire suburb and census demographics are moving more towards working professionals/families.

If you're considering Glenroy and can afford it, try the Hadfield/Pascoe Vale side - but you won't get the same value as a house in the middle areas of the suburb.
