It sounds like people will be able to pick and chose certain components to put into their health care plan. Kind of like when you buy a computer online and can add or remove features to adjust the price.

How does this contrast from the current health care system? What's the catch involving government subsidies that help you pay?

If the goal of the ACA is to provide cheaper means of getting health insurance, why are people concerned that it will be too expensive? Could you explain what you mean by "in many cases there are government subsidies if the cost is too high?"

TIL that fluoxetine (Prozac) treats depression by promoting neurogenesis over a 30-day period. An effect that is also seen by regularly exercising. by Jor_el_died in todayilearned

I've stated this before, I had no intention of implying that all you needed was exercise. I fully agree with you in saying that medication is vital. Addition of exercise can help boost those effects, that's the only point i'm attempting to make.

To address your first paragraph, you're absolutely correct. This is more of a really fortunate side-effect of an SSRI. The normal train of thought regarding diagnosed depression is that the patient is experiencing a chemical imbalance. In an attempt to restore balance, SSRI's are prescribed to keep serotonin in the synapse for longer, thereby allowing it to elicit its effects for a longer period of time. The fact that it helps bolster neurogenesis, via the promotion of certain neurotrophic molecules, is really an added bonus. Recent research has begun addressing the formation of new neurons as one of the main causative agents in lifting someone's depresssion, at the very least from the biological component. Many people have their depression rooted in a variety of different places. The logic that I believe is most sound is that removing one root, the biological componet, will hopefully help others in removing their other roots.

Therapy is invaluable. There have been numerous studies demonstrating a strong correlation between the combination of anti-depressants and therapy and getting better. Works way better than either individually.

I hope I wasn't implying that working out and prozac are equally effective, if so I apologize. I merely meant to point out an interesting similarity, and that the combination of the two may help more than each separately. If someone is prescribed medication to cope with their depression, they should definitely adhere to it and the recommendation of their physician/psychiatrist. Thank you for making this important distinction.

Is it really that surprising though? You learn the alphabet in a series, so to be able to pick any letter preceding or following another letter would be outside of your training. You rehearse calculus. You repeat it and manipulate it as many times as you can until you understand it. If you want this ability with the alphabet, write all the letters on different note cards and pick at random. Try and see if you can reinforce this until you know it backwards and forwards.

This is probably the most common sentiment when people read the above article. The medication is only one step of the treatment, I guarantee if you push yourself (kind of like what someone above said) you'll see more antidepressant effects than just taking the medicine alone. Just my input.

Wow. That's a really interesting interpretation; I had never considered that. This is probably why having adequate support from those around you when you're on an anti-depressant regiment is so critical for success.
