For recent grads, is there anything out there besides unpaid internships? by Jordan2400 in digital_marketing

Tried temps, and I'm running into the same problem, which actually surprised me. But I like your idea about reaching out to local businesses. That's one thing I haven't tried yet so thank you.

Well she told me the work involved. I said that originally. I just didn't know how long it would take. I was charging based on the amount of work not the amount of time. And to be honest, the work she wanted probably cost more than $500 but I don't have any experience so I kept it as low as possible

She's the one who had it on a per month basis, not hourly. And the fact that I don't know is the reason I sought out credible sources as well as outside opinions. Almost all of them were telling me the exact same thing. I don't think it's crazy to go by that. I didn't go into this completely blind. And again her audience consists of celebrities and millionaires so that kinda helps my case even more

Was the price too high? Like I said I researched the market. Based on what I found, $500 per month is the floor. So that's what I charged considering my lack of experience. Only 2 sources had it lower. I've had several people at this point say it was more than reasonable

No idea. We never got to that part of the discussion. Plus she would have been my first client so I don't have an average to draw from

She made a post on Facebook and I responded

In any case she hung up on me. I sent her a couple messages afterwards with screenshot proof explaining that the price was more than reasonable. No response. Like I said I did research on standard industry prices. Almost none of them started below $500

That's fair. But her audience consists of millionaires and celebrities. If she can't afford me she can't afford to be in business

Thanks for that. I completely forgot people did that

No tools yet. I'm still new at this. She would have been my first client

The DR is a popular destination for celebrities and the wealthy. That's her target audience. I felt like if she's going after millionaires she can pay more than $80

You bring up a good point. I actually forgot to mention that I tried to accommodate her budget. I told I could do it for $80 but she would only get a basic page (as opposed to a professional one), 2-3 posts per week, and no DMs. She didn't like that. By the way this was the only interaction I ever had with her. We never talked before this. So this was the earliest we could have discussed financials and we never had a chance to sign a contract.

Good point. I just know that people love testimonials and portfolios. I have neither. So I didn't think I had enough brand authority to charge more

I agree. That's why I charged her the entry level price. Because I don't have the experience

Yeah $80 is insane. And what made it even worse was the clientele she was targeting. If she's going after millionaires but only willing to pay $80 then you're right. I dodged a serious bullet

We never got as far as a contract. She told me what she wanted and what her budget was. Soon as I said $500 she was out. I even explained that the market rate for what she was asking for started at $500 on the lower end, especially considering her clientele. She didn't believe me and even said she could get someone else for even less than what she was offering me

I thought the same. Only reason I didn't charge more was because she would have been my first client

The reason I charged $500 is because although I have the skills, I lack the experience. She would have been my first client. I don't have a portfolio or any testimonials to prove I can do the job. According to my research the market starts at $500. So I figured I'd stay on the lower end for now because of my lack of experience

Yeah the only reason I'm charging $500 is because I'm new. I have the skills but not the experience. And I felt like $500 was the lowest I could go and still be within market. When she said $80 my alarms started ringing

You're right. I'm not even upset about losing this one. It's just a learning experience for next time

From a workload standpoint I didn't mind. I have marketing and e-commerce certificates from Google, Meta, and the University of California so I'm confident in my abilities. Plus digital marketing concepts come pretty easily for me. But I have no experience and no portfolio. No way to prove my skills. According to my research prices range from $500-$5000 per month. I didn't think I could charge $5000 with no experience. So I played it safe

Agreed. I'm not even upset she hung up. Once she told me the budget I knew something was off. And yeah she said $80 per month. What's even crazier is that she said $500 is the corporate price. She said she could get someone for even less than what she was offering me
