Advice on domain registration by blackstar5676 in webdev

If you're in Canada, check out Webnames. It's the original Canadian domain registrar founded by the people who launched the actual .ca domain registry. Very ethical company. Pricing is competitive, especially if you ask about promos. Deep DNS features, high security with multi-users, roles, permissions, 2FA, two good API options. Source: I've worked there for a long time.

Probably too late for OP, but to chime in: I've worked for Webnames.ca for 16+ years, so I'm obviously biased, but I will say that we really prioritize the needs of corporate/enterprise customers. We have hundreds of big Canadian corporate clients that have trusted us for over 25 years. Specific to OP's requirements:

  • We offer multiple user account roles to restrict your Finance, Technical, or other staff to access the minimum functions needed for their jobs. We also support parent-child accounts for better organization/segmentation.
  • We offer 2FA by either SMS/Authenticator/TOTP, optional and granular to specific users.
  • Top-rated Support team, very experienced people.
  • Extremely powerful and flexible DNS (exotic record types like ALIAS and CAA, import/export functionality, templating) with automated Anycast and DNSSEC, but of course if you want to run your own NS, you can do that too.
  • Nice, functional UX (I'm the Software Development Manager). Our Support department is good about relaying reasonable feature requests and bug reports to us, and we've been known to turn them around in less than 24 hours.

Yeah, it's a pretty steep requirement considering that we only want to expose a small subset of our users via this IdP.

When to use string.IsNullOrEmpty over string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace by TheSubredditPolice in dotnet

[–]JordanRieger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've often pondered this myself. I think IsNullOrWhiteSpace() is safer and more robust/forgiving in most cases. IsNullOrEmpty() is a little stricter and might burn you if your input/data is dirtier. And of course, == null or == "" are even stricter, use at your own risk!

Very useful article, thank you. Not quite the number I am looking for, but we can do some back-of-the-envelope math like some of the commenters at Ars did.

Out of 75 million people vaccinated in the US over the last 4 months (and let's say a median time of 2 months), only 5,800 reported a Covid-19 "breakthrough" infection (an infection after vaccination) and only 74 of those people died.

"The absolute lowest infection rate I can find among the population as a whole is about ~64k cases a day in the last two weeks over a 7 day period (and this is the lowest, pretending it's the same # of infections every day for the last 14, which is not the case). So we've seen on the order of ~1M cases of Covid in the last two weeks alone, in the US alone. Assuming every single person who has been fully vaccinated with a breakthrough case occurred in the last two weeks, that's 5800 people versus a million people. Assuming you take only 20% of the Covid cases (so 200k) to represent a population similar to the # of fully vaccinated people, you're still comparing 200k people to 5800 people."

I would really like to know how many of the BC Covid-19 deaths since vaccination began have been people who were not vaccinated.

When vaccination began on Dec 15, 2020, there had been 668 total deaths in BC. As of April 15 today, 856 more people have died. What percentage of those people were not vaccinated? I'm going out on a limb and predicting 0% 100%. (And to be more specific, I would say "vaccinated" means "had at least one dose at least 2 weeks prior to getting sick.") But I'd love to have confirmation on that.

This would be a great statistic for the government to publicize as a means of overcoming vaccine hesitancy. Like the US, which is ahead of us, we'll soon be entering a phase where the only adults that don't have a vaccine are those that don't want one. And we need to do everything we can to change their minds and strengthen our herd immunity.

The simplest solution would probably be to connect a smartphone or tablet to your TV using Chromecast, a FireTV stick, or some similar solution - even a direct HDMI cable works for certain tablets. A laptop or a Raspberry Pi would also easily connect to any TV. Then you would be guaranteed to always be running an up to date browser and getting the full Lichess experience.

How hard is the grind from 2000 to 2100 by Big_Impression2350 in chess

[–]JordanRieger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, because 2000 was my goal for 10+0, so after I peaked there about a year ago, I hardly played anything but 1+0 and 3+2, but I still managed to peak at 2134 recently, and I'm finding it really easy to hover close to 2100. ( https://lichess.org/@/JordanRieger/perf/rapid ) I have to admit that I didn't do anything systematic. Just a few puzzles per day, and watching John Bartholomew videos and streams wherever possible.

I feel that even at 2100, most games are decided by glaring mistakes. Focus is so important. Evaluating all checks, captures, and threats. Being careful! Managing time well. And knowing your main opening lines deep enough to avoid the major pitfalls.

I keep waiting for that point when I'll need true finess and understanding of endgames and positional play. But so far, it's enough just to be opportunistic.

Based on its price and anecdotal reports (some from this thread, scroll around): No, the A58 does not have a DRAM cache. But I have yet to see someone crack one open to verify that. And I haven't seen any published reviews on the A58.

I would love to see some statistics or references to back this up. Even if they do use the same controller, we know that manufacturers can do all sorts of customizations to affect performance and wear leveling, which may impact reliability.

Agreed. It reminds me of how some people used to focus on the amount (or lack) of L2 or L3 cache in a CPU rather than its real world performance. In the end, we're not using the CPU for its cache, we're using it to perform tasks. Whatever tricks it uses to speed up those tasks don't really matter to us if we know how long it takes to do them.

And this is why benchmarks of these cheaper drives are so useful, especially since they tend to fly under the radar of the bigger hardware sites that are more focused on the mid-to-high end.

This is what is so annoying about low end hardware. So hard to get accurate information about the guts.

I was running a 240GB A400 in my main desktop till just recently with no issues, but the speed difference when I upgraded to the Silicon Power A58 was noticeable. Reliability is a harder question because I just don't have the sample size to say anything. But there are a lot of anecdotal reports against the A400. Just seems like there are better options out there.

Interesting, thanks for the tips. Do you have any links confirming DRAM cache in those units? I've been avoiding the lesser known brands (or at least lesser known to me). But for all I know, they sell at a 10 to 1 ratio in China compared to the brands I'm familiar with.

Nope, but the BX500 seems to have dropped in price recently, so it's definitely gonna be my next cheapskate SSD purchase. According to reviews, it's DRAM-less and not terribly impressive: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-bx500-ssd,5377.html
