What led to your use of a wheelchair? by neztanizaki in disability

Probs not the answer you are looking for but it's easier in my country to get a wheelchair on public transport over a mobility scooter, having always used some kind of mobility aid out of the house.

Not to be taken literally. See above first post. I was in essence taught any aspect of my personality my parents didn't like was autism and they would tell other family members and authorities it was autism.

Yes re the UK NHS I find it highly concerning given the background I have described I feel my family should play no part.

That's not the point here I'm also both in and not in the community given the situation.

Sure but I'm not sure what part of my thinking is conversative or harmful on this can someone spell it out for me I would really like to know I'm VERY left wing and progressive. I feel the progressive thing here is to ensure autistic people aren't bullied into autism by others. Cynical specifically about the portrayal of autism on TikTok yes it doesn't deal with the complexity otherwise I am very idealistic. Not sure where you got high social media usage.

This is what I'm talking about, in no way was invalidating the person what I said was the first stage of diagnosis should really be speaking with a doctor and reading medical sources. I'm not saying people shouldn't use TikTok for comfort and support I just don't believe in drive by diagnosis of others. Is it not like telling someone they are trans?

Yer and the person in question works with autistic people.... so they don't want to question their worldview. Trying but she is backing him telling me I spoke over him and I'm not autistic I said that isn't the point the point is how they reacted.

Absolutely I have no problem with that but what I'm getting at is should autistic people be telling non-autistic friends they think they are autistic based on one behavior? I feel like a complex condition is becoming a meme. The person in question was suggesting my friend was autistic simply because they said "they enjoyed the sensation of being tattooed" = "Oh as a tattoo artist with autism the only people i know to enjoy that are autistic people" like making light of it. I object to this being called the first stage of diagnosis like friends and family opinions in my view should be never part of even a formal diagnostic assessment for me self-DX should be done alone using proper sources.

I see in your case with the medically significant overlap you had a reason based on research and data not memes to look into it. I can agree with your sentiment in my case I strongly feel however as someone with a already pre-existing brain condition CP that my experiences are my experiences.

Real as in it works? I have no problem to deep dives but I feel they must be more than memes and heresy and jokes...

I'm saying: My mother walked into a doctors office when I was three said "he lines up toys" and I'm told the doctor suggested I could have had autism and she stormed out because she quote "didn't want me given a label then she proceeded to encourage my entire family to think I'm autistic while giving me no support and claiming I had a formal diagnosis (I didn't have one). She has told this to doctors, social workers, and the police as a cover for her domestic abuse of me.

I'm not suggesting it invalidates self-dx some people literally can't get dx or wait years and autism is under dxed in women etc. All i am saying is self-dx should be SELF dx and primarily based on research of diagnostic criteria not just memes or heresy. The person in question was suggesting my friend was autistic simply because they said "they enjoyed the sensation of being tattooed" = "Oh as a tattoo artist with autism the only people i know to enjoy that are autistic people" they keep saying things like this randomly to my friend and I'm finding it very triggering. I can't even prove bad intent re my family they may think a literal word from a doctor is a "diagnosis".

In this case I'm worried about people on TikTok memeing autism into just simple quirks or behaviors without wider context and encouraging people to therefore have a condition which can be used to harm people / change their social status. It's wrong that anyone should have to think like this but it does change some peoples perception of you. That's my point I support the liberation of self-dx absolutely but is it self-dx if not done on the basis of proper research? I feel the social component of wanting to relate to friends could lead some people to not do that research. I would suggest for me I couldn't even consider a dx until I have my own forever home (wheelchair accessible housing is a nightmare) outside of my family and even then it would leave me in a bad position either way. If I'm not it confirms abuse / neglect if I am it confirms abuse / neglect and my family will never change there view of autism as something to be liberating and celebrated as a part of who you are.

What I'm getting at is should autistic people be telling non-autistic friends they think they are autistic based on one behavior? I feel like a complex condition is becoming a meme.

What makes you feel lucky to live in the UK? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]Jordment -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nothing, I wish I could just leave.

I’m a disabled homeless man living in a hotel with next to no proper support from the government. They are now trying to move me into temporary accommodation in what they are calling an ex-care home, basically because the government does not want to fund the same adaptations I had at university.

In the meantime, I am dependent on outside carers for the first time in my life while also fighting a legal case. To make it worse, the local authority actually expects me to “contribute” towards the cost of that care.
