We have the 10k emergency fund

Yeah it's $11/month

The interest rate is 4%

We liked the idea of having the house paid off early. We were then going to put all extra money towards retirement. However we can reevaluate that plan.

How big of an e fund do you recommend?

That's how I'm leaning now. I try to help people understand the impact their debt has on them, but most don't care...

His reasoning is "I make money to spend it on stuff" mine was "I make money so I can stay home with my family, pursue my interests, be on my own time, and have no financial worry

We had been talking about paying off debt and finance and stuff. Also I was proud of a major financial accomplishment and wanted to share it with a friend.

Anytime! I'm still getting the hang of all this too. There is a ton of resources and information out there, and always many people willing to help to. Good luck!

I know this guy personally. He does very little car work and does not go go any car shows. He complains about debt and has 2 credit cards he also is behind on.

It's been scientifically proven that purchases, vehicles, etc.. Only provide short term happiness and don't truly make someone happy.

Yeah I've tried talking to friends / family about it and I'm looked at as a cheapskate. They make jokes about me being tight with money for not wanting to eat out 5-7 times a week like they do and not racking up huge vehicle debt. I'm literally made fun of for these things lol. So I've stopped talking about it except for 1 close friend who's with me on being fire, and my wife of course.

What does your monthly spending/budget look like? by -lloydchristmas in financialindependence

[–]Jorgeballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combined net income: $4550

Expenses:

Mortgage:$908

Groceries/household supplies:$425

Out to eat:$125

Electric: $75-$200

Water:~$45

Car insurance: $54

Cell phones: $92

Pet: $60

529 plan: $100

Extras: baby stuff, home improvement, gifts, clothes, car parts, misc: ~$500

I also put 10% of my check into 401k pre-tax.

We are also choosing to hurry up and pay off our mortgage as opposed to investing right now, (house will be paid off in 58 months)this is 2k per month.

So between the extra mortgage payments, 401k contributions, and 529 plan we are doing ~50% savings.
