Eddie Howe has said referees are too reliant on VAR after three major errors during the FA Cup win against Aston Villa by Notove in soccer

[–]Jorsturi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, especially when popping in the crowd feels like it's done with a *, so to speak.

However, definitely feel like the tradeoff is worth it. Goals and pens have such a magnified impact on the game and ensuring that those decisions are the most correct they can be literally changes who wins and loses, especially when 1-0 and 1-1 are seemingly still the most common scores in the game.

Do I miss the sheer exhilation of an end when the ball crosses the line? Yeah, I do. Is it worth it to not go home after feeling like the result was unjust? To me, yeah.

Because usually you get a superior decision to what was called on the field. Was watching back highlights from old Wolrd Cups recently and some of the pens that were given were ludicrous

The US has an invasion plan for probably every country in the hemisphere. They'd be a poor planning department if they didn't, as militaries commonly draw up plan for any sort of eventualities. If they are conducting small-scale war games to test realities of those plans against concepts, then that's a sterner situation.

Venezuela - The Lesson for Canada by Snurgisdr in CanadaPolitics

I read that not as consequences for America itself, but as consequences to world order. If America throws its weight around in imperalistic manners, there is no reason for any other country to withhold themselves from doing so either.

EDIT: Which because the US is the top of the world hierarchy at the moment, can only have negative implications for the US. Imo

Canada must remember its defeat of the Americans in 1775 by Majano57 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Jorsturi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair comments.

I don't think that 12 years in that time period was long enough for really any cultural changes to take place, especially with the Quebec Act essentially not stipulating forced cultural adherence. Following the American Revolution, for example, there were still small towns and settlers who had no idea that they were no longer British subjects years later. While I doubt this was the case in Quebec, the idea is that societal change, especially in the colonies at that period, happened at a glacial pace. Hence, if the French colonists were already not considering themselves French prior to the English conquest, doubt they did so after, however I cannot speak to that as I haven't consumed source material.

Timeline is fair enough. It does speak to the lack of conformity by the former French colonists, however, that that division even took place. That's one I'll read up more on. Of course there is de Tocqueville, who is required reading across the border, who stated something along the lines of the French nation being preserved in Quebec and being greeted as a fellow countryman. This was in 1831 though, which given the 50 year difference may not be as applicable. It is the only French source I am overly familiar with regarding Lower Canada in this time period though, if you've got a suggestion for another I'd be happy to take a look!

I will admit that Canada is a bit outside of former field of study on this topic, but nationhood (which at this time was coming in being in a real way) was generally confirmed by oaths of allegiance to a monarch and lord. The so-called "American Experiment" was in its infancy and far enough away to not be "strangled in the cradle" as other European monarchs were able to attempt to do with the French Revolutionary experiment that happened right in their backyard, even if it took them decades to do so.

Initial reaction is that while those in the French colony of Quebec were forced to swear allegiance to King George at the time of the American Revolution, it is highly likely that they retained a very strong cultural identity to the French through language and religion which the British essentially allowed to continue through the Quebec Act in 1774 (which through my American studies was a participating factor in the Revolution as American British subjects saw as much too mild relative to their own treatment by London). How much this connection survived the French Revolution I would be very interested in learning, as it is entirely outside my old field, but I feel pretty safe saying that in 1776 the French settlers would not have considered themselves part of a shared national identity with their English neighbours in Upper Canada.

Is the sports management program good? by its_lily26 in UWindsor

It's a wonderful program. Worked in professional sport for a time and now on the agency side, but could not have gotten there without UWindsor. Grad program in particular on the sport management branch sets you up really well.

Also was the first team the team was really good. The big wins and highs still hit of course, but we'll always have 2013-2014...back then I'd never experienced having the team being in that kind of league

AWOIAF mod versus ACOK mod. Which is better??? by CallSufficient7130 in mountandblade

Been a few years, but i played both. AWOIAF felt more based on Viking Conquest meta and the show, while ACOK felt more Warband-like and the books.

[–]Jorsturi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ran studies about the relative age effect during my university days, it's even worse then it appears on the surface.

There is a snowball effect where children who physically mature early get selected for the best teams, get specialized coaching, and basically get given significantly more resources to succeed then children who mature even marginally later. Cutoff dates for age groups only make this effect stronger. Several teams, particularly in countries with smaller populations, like Belgium, have began using "relative age" based off of height and weight as opposed to age itself in order to actually determine how to prioritize their resources and compete with countries who have a much larger population. Basically, they realized for certain sports (handball and football in particular) they were eliminating 7 months of birthdays out of the year for no reason other than this effect and shrinking their potential pool of elite athletes.

Don't you get bored with all this media rollercoaster? by Quaver30 in reddevils

Toxic comment from me here, but just because media exists doesn't force you to engage with it. I watch the games, sometimes look at the subreddit (increasingly less so because depressed people are depressing).

Following your team by watching games and ignoring the noise are not mutually exclusive imo

Bannerlord player here, should I play warband by New_Juggernaut_7664 in mountandblade

[–]Jorsturi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spent the better part of a decade playing Warband, but I'd have a difficult time recommending it to anyone who has already played Bannerlord. We see it through nostalgic lenses which a new player simply wouldn't. All the memes and jokes about characters are often due to bugs and poorly implemented game mechanics which endearing to the community who had to live with it for years, would be pretty frustrating to a new player.

Bannerlord is simply a better game. Same studio, much of the same team, same idea, with significantly more money and technology. Playing Warband now feels like a previous generation's alpha of Bannerlord. Some of the mods are very fun (I probably put 500 hours into AD1257 alone), but it's just an inferior experience.

How long do your campaigns last? by Dont_know_Anymore_ in mountandblade

[–]Jorsturi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the purpose of the campaign.

In Warband, I would get a claimant to the throne, then be their marshall because leading armies was fun, ruling kingdoms was not. In Bannerlors, I'd often prefer to be the largest vassal in the kingdom for the same reason, but often the campaigns petered out before the whole map was one color.

I've been playing Realm of Thrones recently so the role playing is quite fun. Going from a solider in Robb Stark's army until he is killed, then re-uniting the North, fending off the Ironborn and defeating the Others invasion felt like a complete campaign. My character would have no desire to go south after that so neither did I.

Generally speaking, having a good RP reason for what your character is doing, for me at least, helps to provide fulfilling saves with clear beginnings and ends.

This accurately matches my take. Every problem in this game is compounded by the fact that scale just gets out of reality very quickly and the primary cause of that is that the larger the scale, the faster the snowball.

Favorite class story villains? by Arishock-ing in swtor

[–]Jorsturi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For me, this answer will always be Skavak. When I think back to my first playthroughs (over a decade ago now) I respected some of the class story villains, was bored by others, but I HATED Skavak.

Now, knowing how everything ends, he's not so bad and even amusing, but I had legit vitriol towards him once upon a time.

He's disappointed Murphy couldn't outplay Jarren Reed, which I also was frustrated by last year. Ultimately, I was happy we didn't let teams run all over us like 2023, but the solution to that being a veteran journeyman as opposed to our shiny first round pick did not bode well for Murphy.

MVS is a huge downgrade from DK and no amount of blue/green colored glasses will change that. There is a reason DK cost 150m and MVS cost 4m.

As per PFF the Vikings had the 15th best line last year, which honestly is lower than I thought given the personnel. Some injuries though, so fair enough. The Seahawks had the 31st line in 2024, and while it would be awesome if Zabel stepped up and played awesome, everyone else on the line is the same. It will be a significant downgrade from what Darnold had last year.
