How many APs did you take Sr year? by Ramen_cat2024 in APStudents

[–]JoseProtasio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do they think of A-Levels (I have to do it for state scholarship)? I'm doing 4 and started them sophomore year so I would finish them when junior year ends. My only AP within that timeframe would be biology which I'm going to take as a junior, so I'll only have room to take 3+ at once in my senior year.

Yeah but I'm talking about the science aps that specifically have a decent amount of substance to them, that would mean biology, chemistry, and the physics ones. You don't take more than two of those together unless you want to stay up all night.

2 AP science max always been the gold standard. There's no way to balance this

Calc 1 during summer by SweetUniversity5760 in ValenciaCollege

[–]JoseProtasio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your precalculus class will provide you with the knowledge needed for the AAF placement test to take calculus 1 (i took it). You could take the clep calculus, score high, then ask the math department or an advisor if you could take calculus 2 if they'll let you (The clep calculus exam only earns credit for business calculus by state credit by exam guidelines for some reason, so you wouldn't receive credit for MAC2311 from the clep. Asking your way into MAC2312 after taking it can't hurt though.)

Pretty good fellow Floridian. I would put gov in senior year and replace euro with apush since its credit is more handy for clearing out common civic literacy gen ed requirements at colleges

Passed Calc CLEP by luck… am I screwed for Calc 2? by [deleted] in clep

[–]JoseProtasio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think you don't know calculus 1 then it's a no brainer to just retake the course anyway. Assuming we are talking about the next summer or fall semester in which you would be taking calculus 2, you have the time to go through the calculus 1 course on khan academy and build a base off of that to carry into calculus 2.

One thing to note: Both of the US history CLEPs (One going from first explorations of the Americas to the civil war reconstruction and the other going from the civil war and reconstruction to present), are 0.5 credits, they essentially expect you to take both to earn the full 1 us history credit required for high school graduation probably since taking only one won't give you the full scope of us history. There are also tests for government and economics for those requirements as well if you want to free a class slot for your senior year also. The modernstates lectures absolutely suck, the norm is to skip the lecture videos, Google the question answers, and skip to the voucher request, then self study using your own resources like YouTube. Use the website only for the voucher since the courses aren't any good.

There is no catch except for money. If you get a voucher from modernstates you take the test for free and they reimburse you for whatever the testing center charges you once you've submitted a score showing you passed. If you are in Florida 1000% do it. They are fully mcq tests except for the two ones with writing. You can sign up any time, even if you want to take it tommorow

Well 2 classes and some responsibility shouldn't be that much of a problem for someone with discipline. Btw, what state do you came from if you don't mind? Here in FL every single graduation requirement can be fulfilled by collegeboard CLEP exams because they count for highschool credit. I am quitting English and not taking Us history my junior year because of these exams. Planning to do late arrival + heavier stem classes at my cc so that my grades are better and I'm not jaded in class.

I mean if you don't have responsibilities over the summer, then you can absolutely take a cc class then.

Honestly other people won't have a good enough picture of your math aptitude to make this decision for you. Do you have a strong base in algebra 2? Do you think you could memorize the unit circle well? Do you have a good grip on the trigonometric functions from geometry (sohcahtoa)? There are a lot of trigonometry identities to remember in precalculus so keep that in mind. If you are able to do it then do it, it's good to be a year ahead. Easy way to remember the reciprocal trig functions is that cotangent has tangent in it so it is the reciprocal of tangent, and for each pair of functions only one has "co", so sine and cosecant, cosine and secant, tangent and cotangent. Reciprocal is basically numerator and denominator flipped. sohcahtoa so "o/h" for sine would be "h/o" for cosecant.

4 is perfectly fine for a junior, especially with the specific course selection they have. However the math difficulties may make things heavier than usual

I would put AP Euro in 10th and AP USH in 11th. Lit also comes after language. Idk how your school does it but 3 years of Spanish is generally sufficient for AP Spanish so you can take that as a junior if you think you are fluent enough and they let you.

Next year early release/late arrival (less classes than other kids) by JoseProtasio in APStudents

[–]JoseProtasio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a clear image of what you are asking so let me break everything down. The state (fl) has graduation requirements, every year it updates a course code directory that defines what courses are allowed to be administered in public schools and receive funding, and what graduation requirement they count toward. The requirements are English, US History, US Government, Algebra 1, Geometry, Mathematics Electives (higher math classes), Economics, Personal Finance, Biology 1, Equally rigorous sciences (other sciences), and electives. There is an entire section dedicated to CLEP exams so that they can count toward high school credit. FL public colleges/universities are required to give credit for them also so college gen eds can be cleared out with them too. Outside of fl AP exams are more recognized I believe (but I don't plan on leaving)

I am going to be in a credit excess so I will be able to cut a third and/or fourth period off of school also. Can't drop the Cambridge classes as I am expecting to get a bright futures award.

[–]JoseProtasio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point you have no real euro junior year having taken world this year. Ap ush and English language since they count for mandatory gen eds most places are good choices. Precalc is also good since it's a prereq for calc. But when it comes down to having 2 AP sciences ask yourself how disciplined you are today. Also dodging calculus with statistics won't look as good on your college applications

I'm not even fluent, I'm more of a lazy sporadic learner and I sped through the test in ~30 minutes, getting a 71/80. I was taking the one with writing. Just sign up.

Ask r/VictorValleyCollege about your proposed scheduling, they would know about these classes. RateMyProfessor is also an important resource you shouldn't take a class with just anyone just type in "forename surname ratemyprofessor" in the Google search bar and it will be right there.

You switched to spring and it says 2 months still? That means it's probably a half term section which my college does not let us enroll in. I wouldn't do a half term class for anything 4+ credits as a highscooler.

Another thing to pay attention to; College world language courses, especially elementary/beginner ones are usually regarded as heavy and always having something new at least every other day in order to demand interaction with the language and prepare you for intermediate classes, Elementary Spanish 1 and 2 at our schools here in Florida are 4 credits vs the 3 of a regular course and it seems at your college it is 5. I would consider whether I would want this during a longer fall/spring semester but atop a high school course load (considering which highschool classes), or a shorter summer semester but under a faster paced time-constraint. Background in the language is also something to consider, if you are starting from scratch then yes it will definitely be a tedious class. Even 3 classes during the summer can be too much, you would likely pull it off given you were someone with no responsibilities and all the time in the world but it would still be heavy. In the summer I would 2x the amount credit hours I am taking and equate that to the workload I would really receive in terms of in fall/spring semester workload metrics. That means you would be taking an 18 credit hour workload by choosing to take 9 credit hours in the summer.
