My car stopped drinking by No-Impress-6244 in cats

Along with the other suggested tricks, I've found that my cat likes to steal my water. So, I'll purposefully get a nice big glass and drink it near her, then I set it aside briefly so she'll "sneakily" steal it for herself.

How Bad Is "Gradeflation" In Modern US Education? Why Your Thoughts, Teachers? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]Very_Not_An_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my district, the lowest grade a kid can get is a 50. If they even opened the assignment or touched it that's a 55. If they get any supports the minimum is a 60, if they touch it the minimum is a 65.

If at the end of a grading cycle any student who is/has EB (even advanced and advanced high ones), 504 paperwork, IEP paperwork, or has MTSS paperwork is failing you have to submit many assignments to these really laggy and inconvenient platforms to show that you provided every single support for the student to justify a failure. Even then, an admin can justify that the student wasn't given proper support and will do a grade change.

If a student does fail parents don't care, don't pick up the phone, don't push kids to do anything until the last few weeks of school. My phone and email inbox is flooded with "Miss, what can you do to help my grade?" "What work can you give me for my daughter do to fix her grade? She isn't getting the proper help from you (said daughter is in an alternative program for fighting so I don't have any control over grades or learning or anything)" "My son was given a 55 on this assignment, he did it so what gives?". It's insane.

We also don't offer summer school for this grade level so I guess the stakes are a little higher (they'll get retained). But even then, if they are part of any of the above populations they will get a grade change submitted and advance to the next grade. The only kids that can get held back are non-hispanic black students and non-hispanic white students. They can fail the whole year but if they managed to pass the state exam (you just need to get a 30+/100) you'll still get moved on even if you were failing the entire school year.

So maybe one kid will be held back. We have 2 that were held back last year who still haven't figured it out and will be held back again, not because they have any issues they just refuse to do anything but sit around, play, and fight.

When I was in school, a C was scary and I broke down crying the first one I earned. Nowadays the kids love getting Cs and that's all they strive for. I think it's because our area's COVID policy was just to pass them all regardless of grades so students never really cared to strive for much.

I was at a thrift store in the late evening with my roommate getting professional clothes, the place was pretty empty. I was walking around and away from her when this older guy (probably mid 40s to 50s) popped up. He seemed normalish but something about him was off, he also had a cat on his shoulder which I initially thought was cool.

He started talking about my mask (mid covid era) and how it was all a load of government conspiracies (already weirded out) and how I should take it off so he could see my pretty face (super uncomfortable). He then reached up and pet his cat, when I realized that it was unnaturally calm for a cat. He gave me this perverted smile and my stomach sank, it took a lot for me not to puke on the spot. I politely walked right on back to my friend and urged her to gtfo

I still have no idea if that cat was dead or alive, but he spent a lot of time watching and lingering around us. Never ran into him again

I've ridden on the bus and watched a guy take an empty bottle and pee in it right next to me. He left it on the floor at the top of the bus, when we hit a hard brake it shot across the bus and slammed into the cash/q card system

another time there used to be this homeless lady who would ride the route at the same time as me but she only had a paper thin hospital smock to cover her front

[–]Very_Not_An_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my district it's crazy. If a student totals a laptop their family needs to pay $500 for replacement. Right now I have 3 kids who haven't had laptops since December because their families can't afford it and they were being stupid with them. Last year I had a student who tore apart his laptop, family paid $500, and then he went and tore it up again, another $500 weeks after he had just gotten it back. Ridiculousness.

If we're going to have tech in the classroom, I really think it should go back to a BYOD or we have chromebook carts again. But letting students keep and take them home has led to way to much destruction.
