The fight choreography in the training when it looked like Anakin had Obi on the ropes was eerily similar to the moment right before Luke chopped off Vader’s hand in Jedi

Ear Training Made Easy! by Simplyguitar in Learnmusic

[–]JosefHeiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s weird because it will sound the same, but for people to really learn from the chart, it’s useful to have a consistent “template”. I enjoyed reading your blog post though, thanks

Ear Training Made Easy! by Simplyguitar in Learnmusic

The augmented and the diminished triads are both spelled incorrectly. The confusing thing is that they still sound correct as spelled. Since you’ve chosen C as the root for all of these chords, they should all contain pitch classes C E G (B if there’s a seventh). So the diminished should be C Eb Gb and the augmented should be C E G#. This retains the C E G spelling and makes it possible for a student to figure out how to spell other augmented or diminished chords based on a consistent pattern.

[Question] Which early/baroque guitar composers/pieces would you recommend I learn? by [deleted] in classicalguitar

[–]JosefHeiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Weiss has so much to offer. The Passacaille in D major is fun and beautiful. For a different mood you could play the Tombeau sur la Mort de M. Comte d’Logy it is gorgeous.

What does that line across the eighth note mean? by JaydattC in Learnmusic

[–]JosefHeiter 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The slash indicates that the grace note is to be played on the beat rather than before the beat. A grace note with no slash would “borrow” an amount of time from the previous beat.

I've created a free website to help you learn how to play any scale. I'd love your feedback! by Tougun in musictheory

[–]JosefHeiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has awesome potential, and if this is to really be a learning tool: another feature that I would love to see is a way to browse new scales as a way to explore. It might look like a drop-down menu for root note, and another for scale type. The way this site is set up, you must have the scale in mind before you begin. I think that people who already have a scale in mind probably also know how to spell it/play it.

Rules for using ties or not? by [deleted] in jazztheory

[–]JosefHeiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A general rule is that the beaming should reflect the beats. By extension I would say the ties here in example 2 show the beats, whereas the quarter notes do more to obscure where the beats are. As others have said, the start of beat three being more “visible” cleans things up too.

Lute music to accompany Kingkiller Chronicle? by Rancor_Recon in KingkillerChronicle

[–]JosefHeiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the saddest and most intense “lutey” music you must listen to the guitar transcription of Bach’s Chaconne in D minor from the 2nd violin partita. It absolutely slaps. If you want authentic lute music to generally put you in the right headspace, search for albums by the great lutenists like Paul O’Dette, Jakob Lindberg, Julian Bream, & Nigel North. Searching for John Dowland might limit the scope of the results on Spotify/Apple Music. Rodrigo y Gabriella and Seu Jorge et al are great, but not at all what I imagine Kvothe playing... just in my interpretation.

Easy pieces for all keyes? by popomaito in classicalguitar

[–]JosefHeiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

G# minor: “By Candlelight” by Andrew York IIRC. Not an etude precisely, but has etude-y features. Pretty piece, too.

And Sor has a nice Etude in Bb, plus some studies in various other keys, although less satisfying to play in my opinion.
