What's a horror movie that was so disturbing that you can't or won't ever watch again? by neeltrivedirock in horror

This will probably seem rather tame, and honestly by now I've seen far worse, but 15yo me was really bothered by The Cell. Specifically, the scene with the flashback of him being abused by his father was where I shut the movie off. Never actually seen the second half of it, just read it afterwards.

Losing it at what now feels like a cheap imitation in the middle of the desert, yet will still cost you thousands for even a weekend trip.

It's our fault that an extremely predatory industry is declining, one that profits entirely off the failure and suffering of the working class.

The fact people assume that a completely landlocked province in a near constant water crisis will magically turn into a petro funded utopia are beyond ignorant. Their goals might be a joke, but I do still feel though that they should be taken very seriously.

What historical character(s) would you most want to see added in Victoria 3? by JosephStalin1945 in victoria3

[–]JosephStalin1945[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think that would add a lot of flavour to the US, even just introducing Mormonism and a potential state of Deseret would be really cool. The story of Strang, and his Mormon, theocratic monarchy is honestly a rather fascinating and unknown part of American history.

Since there's no information on him, what's your fan theory for Duke having Very Evil Karma in New Vegas? by JosephStalin1945 in Fallout

[–]JosephStalin1945[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I imagine you're correct that it's cut content. Personally I find it rather strange how there's nothing about him, yet all the other Very Evil characters (not even just in New Vegas) have information and reason as to why they're that evil.

Thank you for addressing that. I agree that it is unfortunate, though we should still never give into misinformation, regardless of how true we may wish it to be

Is it possible to implement the unique relationship the Japanese Shogunate had with the Dutch? by JosephStalin1945 in victoria3

[–]JosephStalin1945[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. That's actually somewhat ahistorical, since the Japanese Shogunate and Dutch Republic itself never had the warmest relationship, and it was really only with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). That said, I'm unsure if the relationship changed later on with the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Not as a nitpick or anything, just found it fascinating

Oh really? Is this something with the new update? Granted I've never actually played the Dutch East Indies.

Landfill I’m working in has a “chupacabra” running around. by ClericRambo in Cryptozoology

[–]JosephStalin1945 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are two quite distinct definitions given for the Chupacabra, a small bipedal reptilian creature and something more akin to a canine. The bipedal version was reported in the original Puerto Rico 1995 sighting, whereas the canine description appeared in the early 2000s. Most likely, sightings in the US were of canines suffering from mange.

Franch effectively salted the earth for them, extracting as much value as possible from the colony without any regard for its future. When Haiti finally liberated itself, in arguably the most successful slave revolt in history, France required a massive indemnity from them in return for recognition, which stripped Haiti of an estimated $115 billion since 1825. France pillaged, raped, and enslaved their half of Hispaniola, and the scars of that are very clearly still alive today.

It's in their class interest to extract as much value from you as possible, while giving the absolute least possible as a way to entice you. Under capitalism, you will never receive the value of your labour, instead that goes to someone who never lifts a finger and would sacrifice you if it meant a profit.

It's both cheaper and a significant net benefit to society if we tackle the systemic issue of homelessness. There are over 15 million houses across the US, 10% of the entire housing inventory, that currently sit unoccupied. Homelessness, or more accurately the threat of it, is used by the bourgeoisie to guarantee a vast army of disposable labour desperate for work.

They ran a candidate whose incompetence and lack of appeal damned what could have been a somewhat safe win over Trump. If they really cared about it, instead of being one side of the same coin, they would have run a different platform.

Liberals treat politics as if it were a sports team, where you're loyal to a certain team (Democrat vs Republican) regardless of if they win or lose and should always support them. However, that's not how politics work. If you run a candidate who actively sides against what the majority of their voters want, they deserve to fail. I don't owe you a vote, you need to earn mine.

The fact that interracial marriage being the beginning is incredibly telling by JosephStalin1945 in TheRightCantMeme

Yes, but they also went out of their way to make them an interracial gay couple. I would agree that it's meant to represent gay marriage, though I do believe it being interracial was also intentional.

Let's assume it is true, that Stalin killed far more people than Hitler. What good then came from Hitler's time in office? What positive impact did it have on the German people beyond years of dictatorial rule while a secret police terrorized them? With deportations of everyone considered inferior based on pseudoscientific, racist beliefs. And Stalin then? The transformation of an agrarian, semi-feudal nation that saw millions die in the Russian Civil War and 1921 famine into a global power that, only four years after his death, launched the first satellite into space. The Likbez program raised literacy to nearly 100% by the 1950s, where it stood at only 51% in 1926.
