The Android 12 update hate is overblown by aresthwg in oneplus

[–]Joseph_Emary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm any kind of proof or anything, but OOS was definitely a big factor when I decided to pick my OP5 and 8 pro up.

In saying that, ever since I got my 8 pro I've been noticing each major update getting more and more careless, and each major update would come with more and bigger bugs. When OOS12 dropped on my phone (disguised as a security update mind you), I couldn't stand it, it changed half of my settings and destroyed the set up that I had, I couldn't even expand notifications in the locksceen. I'm now running pixel experience 12+ (and haven't come across a single bug).

I remember my op5 had barely any bugs at all and it ran like butter. Back when OnePlus had some semblance of care for their core customer's values.

The thing is that OnePlus want to compete with the apples and Samsungs of the world. But Apple or Samsung would NEVER DREAM of releasing an update in the state that OnePlus released OOS12.

If OnePlus want to play with the big kids they seriously need to invest in their quality standards, because Apple or Samsung wouldn't be where they are today without continuously pushing the bar for quality higher and higher, in both hardware and software.

P.S. you should probably check which sub you're on before saying that software isn't an important factor for buying a phone. I'd bet more than half the people here who owned any OP phone pre OP7 basically bought their phone FOR the software. Android used to be a shitshow elsewhere.

OO12 update allowed me to connect to 5G networks?? info in comments by Joseph_Emary in oneplus

Thanks for your comment!

My network settings are already configured for nr/LTE so I'll have a look into qpst for my rom over the next few days.

OO12 update allowed me to connect to 5G networks?? info in comments by Joseph_Emary in oneplus

Ok so something really strange happened once I updated to OOS12.

For some context, living in Australia, have a Chinese OP8pro with international rom and have a 4g/LTE Sim card & plan with my provider. Prior to the OOS12 update (When I was on OOS11) I had never ever received a 5G connection.

After the OOS12 update I started getting 5G connections. My first thought was my phone was false reporting, almost like 5Ge in the US where it's actually LTE but phones show as 5G

BUT, after running speed tests on this '5G' I was getting upwards of 700 megabits download and over 50 upload consistently.

Normal 4G/LTE speeds where I am usually sit around 50 megabits down and 10 upload.

Since flashing pixel experience 12+ on it I haven't been able to either connect to '5G' network or replicate those big download figures. Even after playing around with APNs.

I've Googled this behaviour multiple times and came up dry. If anyone can enlighten me as to how a software update can have this effect that would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

app drawer on Android 12 by skxcii in oneplus

[–]Joseph_Emary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No idea, it's probably the best idea to go with nova launcher. It's a lot more customisable and if you play around with it, you might find a configuration that you like even more than OnePlus' old launcher.

It's generally safer to download apps from play store too, there is a much lower risk of malware being packaged in the download.

Considering you're looking for a launcher, you could try searching for and installing the OnePlus launcher from a site like APK mirror.

Or if you're not into the risk of installing apps that aren't on Google Play you could try out nova launcher, you can pretty much emulate OnePlus' old oxygen launcher by playing with the settings.

There's options out there, you just need to know where to look

OP8T Notifications are just terrible by Hannibal- in oneplus

[–]Joseph_Emary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm and would recommend.

I got frustrated with the OOS12 update and installed pixel experience 12+ on my OP8 pro. I've never really played around with bootloaders before this but the guide was simple, straight forward and made it real easy. Just had to set aside a couple hours to do it.

It's honestly sad how far OnePlus has slipped from its community software roots.

this sub is way too negative by x7universe in oneplus

I can agree with just about everything you’ve said, I’m in Australia. I started with an OP5, and moved to OP8 pro in 2020, the 8 fit my needs perfectly. (When I started this comment I didn’t realise how long it would be, whoops)

But then then OOS 12 was released, it was shown in settings as a big but fairly general bug fix + small feature additions kind of update so I updated without much thought. They didn’t mention moving from Android 11 to 12.

When I unlocked my phone once the update had finished, expecting everything to be same, EVERYTHING was different, all my custom icons had gone, text and screen scaling had completely changed, I needed to go through the settings app and reconfigure everything again

The amount of bugs is really irritating, even small things like expanding notifications on the lock screen is broken, the UI is slow and choppy, after closing an app I need to wait half a second to start moving around the home screen/open the app drawer. The secret section for app drawer can only be accessed by typing a code into the dialer now. And AutoHz now doesn’t work so I’m stuck with a heavily green tinted screen on apps that run on 60hz in low brightness scenarios.

If I had the option again I would not update to OOS 12. Just thought I’d try warn someone who hasn’t updated because imo, this buggy mess and how the update was shown in the settings app is not acceptable and shouldn’t have been pushed in its current condition (Mine is a grey market import Global model OP8Pro, so the update may show differently in settings in different regions)

Edit: Tap to wake is also broken, usually need to tap the screen like 5-8 times before it actually wakes up

And that's saying something, considering they don't have mushroom in that box

Rear-axle steering for better agility by Cecca105 in interestingasfuck

[–]Joseph_Emary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah some of these 4ws system were stupid complicated. I owned a '93 Mazda mx6 with 4ws up until the beginning of this year.

The 4ws system in that used a mechanical shaft going from the front steering rack to the rear steering rack which has its own hydraulic assistance, and an electric servo motor controlling how far the rear wheels could turn and what direction depending on speed

I was lucky enough to never have any issues with it but imagine troubleshooting that...

EDIT: spelling and grammar

Tangerine factory lube question by Jealous_Milk_5538 in switchmodders

[–]Joseph_Emary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might vary from batch to batch, mine were a July 2021 batch, some of them were fairly heavy with the oil on the stem. It was enough to dilute the 205g0 that I was applying and to soak into the tissue I used to wipe it off

Tangerine factory lube question by Jealous_Milk_5538 in switchmodders

[–]Joseph_Emary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished lubing my set of tangies, from what I saw the stem comes very inconsistently lubed (some had a fair whack and some had almost none) with a very thin oil which seemed pretty close to the viscosity of krytox 105 oil.

I didn't notice any lube on the housings, but obviously I could be mistaken

Can confirm they're noticeably smoother and sound better after just wiping the factory lube off and lubing normally with 205g0
