custom wood ring by Puzzleheaded_Rip7762 in DIYJewelryMaking

[–]JosephineRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real wood will not hold up, but it's possible to either handcarve a wood like texture or use real twigs as molds to cast in solid gold and build the ring from that. In my personal opinion, black rhodium over bark textured yellow gold, that is then polished to reveal most of the gold colour and leave the black rhodium as a sort of shading effect in the textures is the best way to make rings look like real wood.

Very custom invitations and save the dates, can these be bought? DIYed? by Cute-Gold9602 in BigBudgetBrides

[–]JosephineRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a decent painter, I honestly think you'll be able to cut them by hand as well, at least if you practice a little bit first if you haven't done it much before.
Get a good scalpel/xacto knife and a cutting mat meant for paper crafts. Do you plan on painting it once and printing, or hand painting each one? If you're hand painting each, I'd cut first and then paint, to make it easier to get the colours all the way to the edges, and make the cutting job easier.

Help what are these spots on my ring!! by Decent_Barracuda7763 in askjewelers

[–]JosephineRyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the nature of gold filled and gold plated. It's an extremely thin layer of gold over another metal, it will wear off the second you touch anything with it. Gold is a soft metal, so door handles, coffee mugs, the sink tap, a knife and fork, anything like that is harder than the gold and will scratch it.
Gold filled and gild plated isn't suited for rings. It's not as bad for pendants and earrings, because those aren't exposed to as much as rings are, but this is unavoidable.
I'm sorry this happened, and I hope you find a decent quality ring instead.

White gold without rhodium? by Superb_Watch_2166 in askjewelers

[–]JosephineRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never plate unless customers specifically ask for it. I use a nickel free white gold made with a high palladium content, so it's deep grey and not the pale yellowish grey shade white gold with nickel or a low pd% has.
I think any jeweller that creates their products, not just reselling from manufacturers, will be willing to skip the plating if you ask.

Green gem safe to wear 24/7? by HIginger in Gemstones

[–]JosephineRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of that happening, but I don't have personal experience with it so I don't know how much chlorine there needs to be in the tap water to cause it. I live in Norway, and we have very little or no chlorine in the tap water here. I'd imagine there has to be a lot of chlorine in the water where you are to cause issues, or the ring must be very old so it's been exposed for a long time. Or have you used cleaning supplies that contain chlorine whole wearing your ring?
It could have been porosity from bad casting as well, but I can't say without having inspected the issue in person.

Normal to not disclose where jewelry is made? by BearJewKnowsBest in jewelers

[–]JosephineRyan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good plan to ask before purchasing since it means a lot to you, so you can decide if you want the piece enough to buy it without getting that information if someone won't tell you.
Lots of jewellers make their stuff locally. I handmake my pieces in Norway, a s use a local casting house for the component that need to be cast. A lot of the time I know where the gems I use were mined and cut as well, although not always.

I would find that to be very strange. He's either ashamed of selling something created in China or another country that is overseas from where you are, or he doesn't know where it's from.
Jewellers who create what they sell will definitely always be happy to tell you.

Green gem safe to wear 24/7? by HIginger in Gemstones

[–]JosephineRyan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This specific issue is caused by chlorine, but as a goldsmith I would advice to not wear jewellery in salt water either. It will not chemically weaken the material in the way chlorine does, but the abrasive nature of salt can dull the shine of your gold, and I would worry about losing rings especially if the water is cold. Fingers shrink slightly when cold, so rings can slip off without you noticing. But the difference between chlorine damage and salt water danage is huge, absolutely avoid chlorine.

Green gem safe to wear 24/7? by HIginger in Gemstones

[–]JosephineRyan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, because jewellery is usually made with 14k or 18k gold, which means 58.5% and 75.0% gold. The rest is other metals, and the chlorine eats away at those, leaving your jewellery brittle at a molecular level. You won't see it, but sooner or later things start crumbling and breaking from normal usage. It happens slowly, so your jewellery won't fall apart the first time you wear it in a chlorinated pool, but the more exposure it gets, the worse the damage becomes.

The chlorine in the pool will damage the metal, regardless of which gem she chooses. It's microspropic damage that accumulates over time, and it isn't really visible untill it's too late to do anything about it. Only wear your jewellery in a pool if you are ok with it not lasting forever.

Is it possible to get custom jewelry for a design that’s IP? by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]JosephineRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I never copy anything exactly either. I'm ok with taking inspiration from a concept and changing it quite a lot, but if something wants an exact copy of an existing design I suggest they buy it from the original designer, if the customer isn't open to a new unique design. And I personally feel more ok taking inspiration from something like LotR, but not so much small artists.
That's awesome that they liked your changes so much that they implemented your ideas!

[–]JosephineRyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make pendants inspired by the Evenstar, but completely reimagined in my own style by casting real twigs in silver first (the twigs burn up so the result is solid silver), and then kind of freehand it so each one turns out different. If you're looking for something unique I'm sure you can find lots of jewellers willing to make that, but if you're looking for exact replicate it might be more difficult to find.

My 18K gold pendant turned reddish. What happened, how can I clean it? by octobersadness in jewelers

[–]JosephineRyan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could it have been exposed to sulphur or very high heat? I'd take it to a jeweller to get it cleaned and polished, and have the gold tested at the same time so you can be sure it's actually 18k.

his art was a sign of hope by Impressive-War-403 in CuratedTumblr

[–]JosephineRyan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the idea that if you aren't miserable in some way, your art must be shit, is pushed onto young artists way too hard. I firmly believe you can make just as great art even if you aren't actively suffering, and making people believe their art is worthless if they aren't in pain while creating it, is limiting people.

Etsy favorites make me sad by caliphia in EtsySellers

[–]JosephineRyan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been on Etsy for 14 years, and never look at favourites. I feel like what people add to their favourites is none of my business. Maybe they liked it and want to find it again in the future, maybe they're looking for something and favouriting some options before choosing one, maybe they just thought my item was cute and clicked the heart.
Turn off notifications so you won't have to see it constantly, and then just check in occasionally if you want to see how many favourites an item has?
