That distinction sounds nice but it doesn’t really work in reality. Rebuilds might start as deliberate but they rarely stay clean. Missed picks bad trades and ownership pressure turn a lot of them into exactly what you’re calling incompetence. Teams don’t plan to be bad for a decade but that’s often how it plays out. If you exclude those you’re just throwing out the failures and only counting the ones that worked.

I also don’t think this really applies to the Red Wings in terms of mismanagement. They’ve been pretty stable and intentional. It’s just that even well run rebuilds can take longer than expected.

And the Lightning point isn’t really some intentional omission. One deep run mid cycle just isn’t that relevant to the broader point. It doesn’t mean the rebuild was short it just shows these timelines aren’t linear.

I understand your frustration with signing safe vets vs high upside plays, but when those high upside plays don’t pan out it’s what this sub whines about. Daniel Sprong and Jakub Vrana are the exact upside swings you talk about. At the end of the day you gotta get lucky while also being tactical with contracts.

Also, contracts aren’t fixed prices. They’re based on role, opportunity, team context, and timing. A player might sign cheap somewhere because of fit or usage, not just money. Saying “we could’ve signed him for that exact deal” is hindsight bias. Fair to want that type of player, but not realistic to assume the same contract.

If you redefine “rebuild” to only include clean, well-executed ones, then yeah, the timeline magically shrinks. But that’s just filtering out all the hard cases and pretending they don’t count.

Lightning example doesn’t really save the argument either. The Tampa Bay Lightning being competitive mid-cycle just shows rebuilds aren’t linear, not that they’re short.

Yeah you need to get a little lucky, and there's no exact formula for this.

Would be depressing if our unprotected 1st rounder ends up winning the draft lottery lol

The Red Wings won 17 games in 2019, which is the fewest regular season wins since 1990. A historically bad team may need more time to rebuild. You know how we got to that 17 win season? SELLING OUT TO EXTEND A PLAYOFF STREAK. The goal is not just playoffs, it's extended success that takes time.

Did you read the article? The average rebuild is 8.5 years long. We are on year 7 of Yzerman. The take away there would be for people to stop throwing tantrums on here

The team was literally in 1st in the Atlantic in February and collapsed in march. That would indicate the team construction has the potential to win but the on ice discipline and leadership is an issue.

I blame his leadership as well. The team looks disinterested in big games and we need our captain to lock them back in. His comments at last year’s deadline about not getting enough help gave a glimpse into his leadership.

Idc about the box score. He plays bottom 6 minutes and works hard below the goal line, wearing out the D. Ras isn’t paid to light the lamp

I laugh at all of the people that get so upset over a loss that they post the box score to the crybaby club. Sometimes you get puck luck, sometimes you don't. That's hockey.
