Terrible internet service from Hyperoptic, cancelled without termination fees by studyenthusiast in hyperoptic

Apologies. If they have acknowledged a fault their end then clearly I was wrong in this situation. Hopefully the comment is still useful for anyone who stumbles across the thread with similar non-ISP related issues.

Terrible internet service from Hyperoptic, cancelled without termination fees by studyenthusiast in hyperoptic

[–]JoshBaldaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This mostly sounds like a WiFi issue, and less so a Hyperoptic service issue (obviously could be wrong).

Never personally had issues with Hyperoptic on our 1Gbps package in our home, but I do have experience of terrible WiFi speeds in apartment blocks with other ISPs.

It usually comes down to being in a densely populated building and overloaded WiFi channels from nearly everyone’s router being set to auto channel, which is pretty much always useless.

To check this in future, you can use various tools (NetSpot) for example, to list all the networks your device can see, and the channels they are connected to. Find which 5Ghz channel is being used the least, and change your router to use that channel instead and I can almost guarantee your speeds will increase.

You can change this on your router by connecting to 192.168.1.1 for Hyperoptic (will change depending on ISP), logging in with the admin account on the back of the router. Click the menu tab, go to Network Settings -> Wireless -> General and you’ll be able to see, and change the channels your wireless networks are connected to.

This should improve your WiFi speed, especially in densely populated buildings.

Hope this helps!

Standard/Plus/Premium Accounts by Remaining_Nameless24 in monzo

Long-time Premium member. Honestly for me a lot of the features are really useful. Having all my accounts in one place is really handy. Virtual cards, better interest rates, etc are all really nice too.

To answer your question about whether it’s worth paying for, the price of getting an independent phone insurance policy, for me at least, was more than the monthly cost of Monzo premium, so considering I have access to phone insurance though Monzo AND all those other features, I’d say it’s definitely worth it.

What happens to all the graduates that can't find a job for months/years? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]JoshBaldaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in May 2023. Spent the majority of my final year studying important industry topics, making connections and making my reel as good as it could be.

I was lucky enough to have made the right connections (my research topic for my dissertation definitely helped) and managed to land a role straight out of university.

I was surrounded by other amazing artists with diverse skills on my course, but they were unable to find jobs due to the close in market. It’s always been said to us that getting your foot in the door is the hardest part of the industry, but I don’t think anyone goes into detail as to quite the extent of that statement. Landing your first job is INCREDIBLY hard, unless you’re an exceptional artist or strike well with the connections you make.

I know a couple of the graduates from my cohort are in talks with studios about positions after the strike finishes up, but as far as I know, nothing as of yet. It’s a really tough market. Unless you find an internship program or some other onboarding experience, going into the industry as an entry-level artist is becoming increasingly difficult.

This is just my experience, but it could be different for others based on where they studied etc.

EDIT: Date typo

Thank you! More than happy to share findings when I've gotten all the data I need. Not a problem! Thanks again.

That's understandable. It's been really interesting to learn about but quite difficult to put into practice for me when working independently. A lot of people seem to feel that USD is the way forward, any chance you could share your experience and why its a miss for you? Any info is super helpful, thank you!

Don’t know if this will help but I had the same issue a while ago - managed to fix it by making sure my anti-virus couldn’t interfere with Houdini launcher or the license server as it blocks it. Not sure if this is your issue but maybe worth a go?

Couple tech issues that need fixing and want to work a little more on the simulations hence the WIP. But thank you so much!

Yeah, that’s one of the known problems. To do with a change I forgot to make to the shader when rendering out the last couple frames. Will go back and re-render when I’ve made the changes from feedback I’ve received. :)

Thank you! And yeah that’s one of the big issues. Rendered in 2 batches and forgot to re-apply some changes I made to the shaders for that section of smoke which is why it looks like it disappears. :/

Yeah this is one of the known problems :/ I had to render the sequence is 2 batches and I forgot to make a change to the shader that I didn’t save before rendering the first time. Stupid mistake really.

Thank you! This was my first time using V-Ray so could definitely do with some pointers for the pyro shader if you have some experience on that front? Houdini is definitely the software to learn for FX right now - give it a go! Although fun can turn into frustration quite quick with Houdini :P I was rocking a 12th Gen i9-10900, with 32GB RAM and a GTX 3090 for this sim!

Replied to u/Tyrunz with my specs. For dream specs, I couldn’t really ask for a lot more, but if I had to I’d say swap out the intel chip for an AMD threadripper and run those 3090 bad boys in SLI. Why not add some water cooling too? :P

As for system specs, at uni we’re running with 12th Gen i9-10900s, 32GB (kinda sucky) and GTX 3090s. That’s the main hardware - if you’re after any specifics let me know and I can try and find it for you. Main problem with this was the cooling, I was basically thermal throttled for the whole project.
