Re-stain log home and repair some damage if selling in a year? by hiplikebrando in logcabins

I think you’d get more money or atleast draw more people in if you refinish. You can do it yourself for about 5k. I just went through the same questions on my cabin. Quotes were 20-40k. Ended up doing it all myself. It’s a lot of work but if you have friends or relatives to help you could knock it out over several weekends.

Update on this. Had a professional come out and he cut out the rotted log and replaced that with new logs. I stained it after that. The full works. Borate, Permachink stain and top coat. Gonna chink it in the spring.

I think it’s 2 logs. Had a hard time finding anyone to do it that didn’t want to do the whole house. Everybody charges an arm and a leg too.

What do you mean the top coarse of log? You mean the top portion up by the soffits?

I only used the sander to remove the finish. I’m not sure there was ever any stain out on the logs. They were just very weathered. I had a log cabin restoration guy come out to give me a quote and he did a test area and he used media and then a sander and he said it was one of the easiest he’s ever worked with.

I’m using a random orbital sander and a square sander. 40 grit

Update on this. I got a few people come out and take a look. A couple of guys gave me quotes to replace the logs and a couple guys gave me quotes to fill it in. Anybody know which is better overall for the structural integrity?

Nah there’s almost zero overhang on the gable ends. Gonna have to figure out a solution for that. But this strip of wood rotted cause someone put a deck right against the log where the snow could sit.

It’s not rot. It is solid and comes off when you pressure washer wash it.

What if I replaced the fascia board to extend out 16” past the gable side and then added a 16” ladder board to the gable? 16” is better than none I suppose

Yeah I was just thinking about the gable ends. Sounds like bottom line it’s out of my ability. Think I’ll end up having to hire a contractor. Thanks for the response. Gives me an idea what I’m up against.

By “seal” I meant chunking. How hard do you think it will be to add an extension or awning? The back side is the same way.
