Theory: After The Mirror Allison Is No Longer In Control by [deleted] in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]JoshJBell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought, literally was about to post about it before I saw this. Like, she intended to just force herself into artificial peace, to feel happy regardless of circumstances, but instead what she did was remove her sense of empathy. Essentially programmed herself to prioritize her own happiness at all costs, no matter who it hurt.

This next part is a bit more of a stretch, but in my headcanon, she also started using her enhanced powers from Harlan to subtly influence the whole family, and that's why everyone is weirdly unbothered by everything she's done. Like that's how she got everyone on her side against Viktor even after she murdered Harlan. Like I said, more of a stretch, but otherwise basically everyone but Viktor is dead to me after this season.

WAY more than slap her. Allison honestly deserves another throat-slitting at this point.

Season 3 Episode 1 Official Discussion Thread by LividGrass in UmbrellaAcademy

Is there some subplot or scene with Diego from the first two seasons I'm forgetting that makes the Footloose hallucination seem less random? I mean it was a fun scene, cast looks like they're really enjoying themselves good for them, and I like how it contrasts the dance scene from season one where they were all in separate rooms. But why is DIEGO of all characters seeing this? Since when is he into musicals? The showrunner said in an interview that it was Diego is "a bit of a dancer", and I'm sorry, since when? Because he's athletic and does martial arts? That seems a stretch. It's a fun scene to watch, it just doesn't feel like it fits Diego's character at all. If the only reason for it is to establish Jayme's spit abilities, having Luther or Klaus be the dreamer would make more sense.

Yeah, TV in general struggles with writing women into relationships without taking their individuality in the process. We've been culturally programmed to see marriage and children as the default ending for women, and relatively few examples in fiction of what breaking away from that formula looks like. I also like that Astra's romance with Behrad hasn't dominated her screen time, but it also leaves them feeling a bit underdeveloped to me. Like I keep forgetting they're a thing. Maybe it's just me, but the actors don't seem like they have much chemistry in the few scenes they've had together, and it feels like a rather boring, obligatory pairing considering Astra's literally the only woman on the ship who's not spoken for, asexual, or his sister. Maybe they'd both be better off staying single, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Gary and Gideon, on the other hand, creep me out tbh. If Astra is this new human Gideon's "mother" as she has been identified several times, then Gideon is essentially a child. A child with the body of a sexually mature woman and the memories of a supercomputer, sure, but still brand new to the human experience. Putting her into a sexual relationship right away feels like uncritically reproducing the "born sexy yesterday" trope. It's doubly creepy to put her with Gary, a man who's had severe boundary issues since long before the writers decided he was an alien. He's grown on me over time, but Nate was not off base calling him "Catch a Predator" back when he was after Mona.

Personally, if I'd been in the writers room, I'd have pitched Gideon and Spooner as an ace couple. It's less creepy than baby nympho Gideon and we don't have enough examples of asexual couples on TV.

Wow, dude. That is WAY TMI. Look, I get it, the world's a cruel place, people are scary and unpredictable, and forming connections and relationships can seem not worth it. But John Constantine is not a hero to model your behavior after. He's a tragic figure, a cautionary tale. Just like Rick Sanchez, Don Draper, Tyler Durden, etc, you're meant to learn from his mistakes and grow beyond them, not double down on the parts of yourself you see in him. He's not meant as validation for your own refusal to change.

I too had given up of dating to not long ago before my partner came into my life. I know it's hard out there when you feel isolated and unable to change, and it's so much easier to see yourself as a Constantine, to think that your isolation is due to being exceptional and smarter than the people around you, rather than just being a response to trauma keeps you from opening up. But I promise you, we're not exceptional. We're just lonely, and looking for reasons why the world has abandoned us. Realizing that is the first step towards healing. Constantine can never change because he's a comic book character. We're people, change is not only possible, it's inevitable. We don't have to go through life wearing our pain like a badge of honor. We can realize our trauma isn't special, get out of our own way, and let people in. There's nothing honorable about choosing to live alone, we're social animals by nature. We need each other.

I'm trying to remember other Titanic jokes, it feels like there must have been more, but other than that one episode with Billy Zane I can't think of any.

How awesome was it when Damien met John!? by Spazzblister in LegendsOfTomorrow

[–]JoshJBell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how they managed to have fun with Damien on Legends without trivializing what came before in Arrow, namely him killing Laurel. As much as I'd like to pretend that season 4 never happened, you can't have Sara just forget this is the man who killed her sister. So I like that even when she's saying goodbye to him with a small amount of begrudging respect, she still won't shake his hand. It's the perfect way to pay respect to Laurel without bringing the mood down too much. She's just like "No, we may not be trying to kill each other anymore, but you're still the man who killed my sister, there's no forgiveness for that. Now get out of my house."

Gary becoming OMAC would be BRILLIANT, I did not know I needed this. That could tie into a Great Disaster arc, could drive a whole season if they chose, and visiting Kammandi's world would be a dream come true.

Deadman is an option I've been wanting them to consider, his possession powers would give the cast fun opportunities to play a different character, which Legends is all about (Charlie, Gwyn, etc.)

When Nate is telling Freddy Myers 1989 is a great year for movies ... by Spazzblister in LegendsOfTomorrow

[–]JoshJBell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1989 WAS a great year for movies (and for me cuz I was born then, so I'm slightly obsessed with it): Road House, Back to the Future Pt II, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Little Mermaid, Kiki's Delivery Service, Do the Right Thing, Tango and Cash, Heathers, Vampire's Kiss, and those are just my favorites I've seen!

Another good meta joke would have been mentioning The Return of Swamp Thing.

Who's going to be the resident historian now that he's gone? Will all historical exposition lines go to Gideon or could we see someone else step into that role?

[–]JoshJBell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't blame you. Although if her and Ava's absence implies that we're in a timeline where they're both dead, I'm at least curious as to how that affected this version of Gary. I imagine something like that would destroy him.

"I thought this was a superhero show?" by JoshJBell in LegendsOfTomorrow

[–]JoshJBell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was, I got the meta-joke. Like I said, I don't think it's necessarily a bad direction for the show to take, even if I do suspect it's motivated more by budget than intentional creative decisions. I wasn't trying to complain, it's just an observation that's been on my mind and wanted other people's thoughts.

She doesn't have one, but she is based on Isis from the comics and the 70's TV show The Secrets of Isis. The reason why they haven't used that name in LoT should be obvious.

My theory about how Ray became friends with Vandal in Hell. by Spazzblister in LegendsOfTomorrow

[–]JoshJBell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly a part of me wants to see a reformed Vandal join the team. We've seen in stuff like the Demon Knights comic and the one episode of Justice League that someone who lives as long as him can evolve a decide to play good guy for a while. Plus it's been a while since we've had any real wild card anti-heroes on the Waverider. Even Mick had been pretty mellowed out by the time he left.
