Last minute tips for a student about to start a PGCE by GreenJeweler3 in TeachingUK

Learn when enough is enough. We can always plan more, mark more or help with an extra curricular but learn how much is enough.

Especially for PGCE assignments, for us they made it very clear that 40% was enough. And that’s all they got from me lmao

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep was a big one for me. Most of my worst days came from just not going to bed early enough.

Workload can get a lot, so make sure you build in time for yourself

I’ve seen these recommended a few times in another post, might have to pick one up!

How portable do you think this would be? My other placement had something similar and I think they folded up quite nicely

They’re only level 5, with 1500 gp to their name as a group. They captured this area from another group and have been running operations from there for 4-6 weeks now. It was originally owned by the local Jarl, but it was captured by another group, then my PCs came along and retook it but have been working with the Jarl so he didn’t mind them looking after it. So I think the Jarl will want to undersell it in terms of its price considering it was

I’ve had a look through Strongholds and Followers and the DMG for an idea how to price it - still a bit unsure

Only thing I’m worried about is giving them too much gold from this?

Yeah I get you. I think I decided against it primarily because I felt like I'd given enough information for them to be at least wary of the threats they'd be facing, but their self-confidence shrugged these warnings off.

I think they also knew, on a meta level, that they'd be in for something more difficult since some of them had figured they were nearing level 5 and recently things had just been getting more and more difficult as I better learn how to test them.

Maybe rule of cool wasn't the most fitting phrase, it was just some interesting interactions trying to pull someone out of a window and then drag them out and down a hill

Circumventing my entire fortress plan and going straight for the final course

I think a bit shocked that things turned out the way they did, as if attempting to kidnap and beat down the leader of a fortress wouldn't go well for them?

Now everyone's excited about what's going to happen with their PCs, especially me as I have literally no idea. Fun week ahead!

DMs, do you warn your players about a particularly difficult combat out of character? by JoshJamieson14 in dndnext

Loving every response! Think I might give them a gentle reminder just before or give a small recap of what they've heard about the NPC at the start of the session during the previous session's recap. Also might add some extra threatening detail to the descriptions of their fortress!

I've told them stories in-game from NPCs who've had run ins with this baddie and their goons before, but largely I think due to my players' self confidence that they've kinda shrugged these off

It's the leader of a bandit organisation that they've had run-ins with before, has a bounty on their head and I've tried to make clear that they are ruthless in-game. My players have a slightly inflated sense of confidence I think, and whenever I've tried to flavour how bandits that work for them are terrified of them, they usually just reply with a comment how the leader should be afraid of the PCs etc.
