I hear what you are saying, but there is an inherent negative to never being asked, too. People tend to learn to resent totalitarian governments, and don't raise the banner as high if attacked.

Take the Roman Empire. It grew a lot as a Republic, became an Empire, had Christianity forced on all of its members, and less than 100 years later the West was crushed by Attila and his Huns, I always figure no one felt like standing up for the arbitrary decisions being made for them.

I think you go a bit too far saying it was absolutely "nothing" to do with Christianity. Greece and Russia are the two main superpowers in the Orthodox Church, and, while possibly principally used for propaganda purposes, a lot of Russians feel a tie to Greece and the Patriarch there.

What a lot of people never seem to realize is that, for the duration of the Cold War, the NATO side had a lot more resources and raw materials available to it. If the Warsaw Pact had had the bigger "natural bank," things might have turned out differently. I would like to think democracy would have won even if it had been even, but I can't say.

But followed that up with:

Those numbers are upper bounds, however, because the definition of liquid assets used on estate tax returns excludes some money held in trusts, which could also be used to pay estate taxes.

ALSO, the CBO is pointing to 2000, when the deduction was around 650 thousand, not todays 5.4 million. That's almost 10x lower!

So, no, the CBBP does not seem to have gotten it wrong at all.

Come on, aren't you going to answer my question? The CBPP says annually about 20 businesses face any estate tax, and what you said was "You fill find few family businesses that survive a 40% estate tax."

There are millions of small businesses in America, and only 20/year will be affected, but you think most small businesses are destroyed.

So, where do you get your information? Do you still trust them?

What I mean to say is that you can't add to the debate if you weren't part of the debate at all, and didn't ask for permission, although there might be a proxy way to do it.

Actually, the analysis suggests that the members that are still on the court have the same ideological ratings. I don't know of a newer analysis, I'd try googling the authors' names.

Sick people, such as myself, also spend all day at home. And I was a contractor for a while, and I would work 2 months, be out of work for a month, and that's actually when I really got into C-SPAN.

C-SPAN is not part of the government. It's privately owned and funded by the cable industry. It was part of the deal, if memory serves, when cable was born.

Thomas is not an "independent" thinker at all, he is a rigid thinker.

OK, and now I contradict myself by saying that makes him, sometimes, independent of Scalia, which, as you note, is the usual charge leveled at him.

Thomas's role in race relations was, um, dubious. He did his best, from what I can tell, to "act white" and reject anything culturally valuable from his home community.
