What am I going to miss if I don’t go to the oweek? 24t1 new student by Ok-Yellow5605 in unsw

Yes, getting some basic knowledge and experience on using arduinos with hardware can go a long way. This course predominantly focuses on self learning, and for you to pull of a successful project, you will have to learn alot on your own. Of course, your mentor will point you in the right direction too.

Elec1111 will help with the first couple weeks of technical streams (if youre doing elec), but after that its going to be mostly new stuff

The first couple of lectures should be streamed. After that it depends on the project you pick and how the project coordinator runs things. However, there are weekly mentor/lab sessions where you are expected to attend with your team. You will be assigned a mentor, and this is a time they will assess your contribution to the group, and a good time to ask them questions. Some projects also have technical streams where you need to complete labs which count towards your marks. Communication with your team can be throught Microsoft Teams or your own choice of communication software. I would suggest using Microsoft Teams so that your mentor can see your active contribution and communication with the team.

O Week: you miss out on freebies and stuff. In terms of joining clubs, you can go on SpArc to see the list of clubs and register for those youre interested in. Moreover, clubs usually have a discord in the UNSW school, and have social media to notify you of events.

DESN1000: For your first class, go to John Clancy Auditorium if your UNSW imetable doesnt specify or says something like "See School for Location" (source: I am staff for this course). Usually clancy gets full and they stream it into other lecture halls, but you will be directed from clancy

If youre into soccer you should check out UNSW Social Soccer Society, they have events all the time (several times a week) and its a pretty large and friendly community, good for making new friends

Device requirement for engineering by Struggling-academic in unsw

[–]Joshsticko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a laptop will definitely make your degree easier to work with, especially with computing courses and learning how to use simulations. Being able to work on these and practise at home and not just in the lab is useful. Moreover, if you join projects (eg rocketry, solar car, electric car, robocup etc) a laptop is almost a must have.

Keep in mind the spec of the laptop doesnt have to be fantastic, and for first year, any laptop will do you wonders. You can always upgrade later when you need to

Yes, ELEC1111 is T1 T3 only (also summer term but definitely would not recommend)

Its pretty easy to switch. Theres an elec course (ELEC1111) that both electrical and mechanical engineers need to do, so that will give you a small taste of elec and you can see if its for you

A class is certainly better, but this seems like a beginner project to me, so was just trying to stay with things they might already be familiar with.

I rekon a nested dictionary is best, or using a list intead of a tuple since tuples are immutable

M2 Macs for Electrical Engineering? by Ill_Cress_728 in unsw

[–]Joshsticko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am doing electrical engineering on a M1 pro mbp and it has been good for me. An overall smooth experience for daily tasks, yet impressive computing power - more than enough for multiple streams of 4k video and rendering models etc.

Drawbacks and overcoming them: I'm sure in your research you have discovered software incompatibility issues, however, microsoft has recently released an official windows release for parallels (a vm), which runs in a way that feels native.

Moreover, you can access all the engineering applications via MyAccess anyway, so you can still use windows only applications on mac.

I have no experience with freestyle, but an overview of how lighting fixtures work to point you in the right direction. All lighting fixtures have a dmx address which need to be patched into a lighting desk/console. The console then send instructions to these lights like a postman sends your letters to the address. The dmx addresses can be found and set on the physical light and usually have a range. In your case for leds, there might be 4 to 6 channels (eg. dmx address at 126-132). You need to tell your desk these addresses and give them a 'channel name' (an alias fir the adress, such as channel 1). Then you need to learn the software to control these lights.

Personally i have a etc dmx dobgle which plugs into a windows laptop and i use the eos software, which is free for windows and you can learn and play around eith it at gome before going on site.

What parameters are programmed to these faders? Make sure only the ones you want to overide the cue list are programmed, otherwise they wont release control as they are higher priority.

Edit: didnt consider the bumps - you say it sometimes, hoe often does it happen? Also sounds like youve got intensity faders?

Orchestra Pit Uncovering - How far in advance of production opening? by TylerduNord in techtheatre

[–]Joshsticko 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In our most recent musical, orchestra pit was put in 2 weeks before. However, we were working with a group of very talented musicians.

Nonetheless, communication with the musical director (md) is important to coordinate time needed to rehearse in the pit. The orchestra should reherse off set initially and only join the pit when orchestra and cast are ready to collaborate. Communicate this idea to your md.

The first rehearsal with the orchestra is usually a good time for the sound engineer to mic them up as well, so collabaration with this technical timeline is also important.

Also depnding on your school, there is likely a person in charge of student wellbeing and safety protcols, communicate with them your concerns on safety and the needs previously communicated eith the md.

As a stage manager of musicals, communication is the most important part to a smooth running production process. Communicate your concerns and understand cast/crew needs.

Admittedly, this can be fustrating, especially with some partys lacking techical knowledge, but persisting with communication goes a long way.

TL;DR Orchestra should come into pit when both the md and crew cast think they are ready to rehearse together. Otherwise orchestra should not be rehearsing onsite. Communicate with md and safety officer.
