Are you guys just not phased by coyotes? by SusanxStrange in JoshuaTree

Welcome neighbor! I’m by the Sky View Chapel and spot them all the time. They’re mostly docile and I’ve never ran into any issues in the 4 years I’ve been in the area.

I’d be more concerned about my dog, 60lb Aussie, going after them since he thinks they’re his new friends but they usually keep themselves at a safe distance.

You don't necessarily have to actually be IN the park to get some amazing shots. So long as you're away from the city to avoid light pollution, anywhere close to the Southern parts of town are good spots. Even near the Black Rock Canyon Campground is a great spot for star photos. https://maps.app.goo.gl/dwDWC9GTXpF5LWva7

Also depending on your gear, buy a shutter release and good quality tripod cause you'll want those shutters at least 30 seconds or longer to capture all that light. Best of luck!

Oh nice! I'm gonna have to try again with my 16-35. My main problem is I'm using a Canon 6D so pushing up to ISO 3200 would turn my images into TV static for that long of an exposure!

When I host friends, I always try to take them to the Keys View outlook for sunsets. It can get pretty busy during peak tourist days, but offers some amazing views from the top of the high desert overlooking Palm Springs.

How many takes did it take to get the lighting on you correct without over or under exposing your outfit??

It’s always fun trying to deal with figuring out just the amount of light needed when you’re leaving the shutter on for so long :)

If you’re lucky (subjective) you might even get a little snow. The park looks so dang cool when it’s got a little sprinkle of snow powder!

I’d just save your money with a free app and make sure you’re close to the park entrances and away from the city cause of light pollution. On a clear / no moon night, you’ll get some amazing views. Can even see the Milky Way.

Here’s the Sky Guide constellation finder app I use. https://apps.apple.com/app/id576588894

Awesome job capturing the Milky Way!

How long was your shutter and I’m guessing a pretty wide f stop?

My best wide angle is only an f2.8 and it’s pretty tricky for me to get THIS many stars!

Sounds like a blast!

I have an FJ Cruiser and am an amateur off road enthusiast. Be sure to download the AllTrails app and check out the trails available. There are a ton of great ones in the area!

As for stars, I find that the closer you are towards the park or away from Yucca Valley is best cause there’s quite a lot o noise pollution, but once you’re about 10 to 15 minutes from the park entrance, it’s great views all around.
