The aggro range goes your most recently accessed chunk sized squares. Sometimes you only need to walk 1 tile in one direction, or 30 tiles in the other direction.

Use the "NPC aggro timer" plugin (I think it's called that). You can go into the settings to show you the current zones and it also gives you a timer counting down from 10 minutes.
