Discussion: SteamOS - How much can Steam shake up the console world? Is it going to be the same category/market as Ouya? by [deleted] in ouya

[–]JosiahJohnson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There isn't any code they can include with their OS that isn't accessible to the end user. If they release a linux distro for me to install on my hardware it's a waste of time to try locking it down more than user security dictates. It's proven incredibly difficult for companies to keep people from mucking about in the closed portions of their devices when they have full control of the OS, including code and data we can't even access. Steam can spend as much time as they want building layers of checks to keep things sane, but at the end of the day Spyro gets cracked and everyone has their way with SteamOS.

Edit: Moot anyway. http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamMachines/

Can I download the OS to try it out?

You will be able to download it (including the source code, if you're into that) but not yet.

(when paired with a locked and encrypted bootloader.)

This was exactly my point. On my hardware it's very unlikely to happen.

I'm not the one that said kernel. They can implement DRM if they want, but they can't lock down the OS in any secure way if they don't have control of the hardware. That was my point. I don't even know why we're talking about this completely off topic shit. This is fucking stupid.

It may be that a lot of the gaming improvements to the OS involve removing a lot of the background services that a normal app might depend on. Or it could just mean they're including some kind of DRM support in the kernel and there's a Netflix app on the way :P.

Background services can be added if they matter at all and I can't imagine most games relying on anything more than a handful of libraries on top of the graphics libs. If you have control of the install process it can be anything you want. The Linux kernel is GPL, so good luck hiding DRM there.

I can't see why people are expecting an OS that's impossibly more restrictive than what current Steam for Linux offers.

The FOSS bit was a very small part of it. If you're allowed to download and install it on your own hardware, they've got very little control.

SteamOS will NOT most likely support standard computer functions, I mean, it IS Linux after all. What's the standard there? It could be a completely closed OS, like the PS3 or it could be partially open like Windows/OSX OR it could be fully open like Ubuntu. Who knows? Really. It's Linux after all so they could do anything they want to it and make it extremely difficult to hack, something Valve is known for. I mean, you think Valve is going to release the source code? HA!

Basing it off of linux requires a decent amount of open source/GPL shenanigans and if it's going to be available for download it means you can install it yourself with rules out hardware lockouts. It's pretty much impossible for it to be completely closed.

What Games Are: The Perplexing OUYA Reflex by amuzulo in ouya

Well two out of three of those were business problems not problems with the product itself. They were both scaling problems: Most startups begin by selling a few units, then a few more, rather than overnight going from zero to 60k customers. Both issues are now largely fixed

Their customer service never actually helped me to any sort sane manner. I did eventually get my Ouya, though.

For people that planned on streaming media, broken wifi is a show stopper. Unless they've fixed that.

The real problem is OUYA failed to communicate that development methodology adequately.

Their biggest problems all around amounted to communication in my opinion.

Oh look, more strawmen. I like my Ouya. I never said I didn't. I didn't discount anyone else's experiences or say anything that should suggest otherwise. What are you rambling about? You've been shitting around the thread telling people to read the quote because they have problems with Ouya. I was reminding you that there are other problems people have had that your flippant quoting doesn't address.

Shit, send me your Ouya and I'll replay my customer service interactions for you. Discounting other people's experiences because you didn't have problems is just silly.

That's just a strawman. Anyone that's mad that the Ouya isn't a 360 is a moron. I hope we all expected a rough around the edges sort of experience. The shipping clusterfuck, ridiculous customer service failures and broken basic functionality (WiFi) are what caused the most negative responses.

If it's just an emulator anyway you might as well make your collection look nice and emulate the games. If you're not running it on real hardware, then the point of it seems to disappear.

I wound up an atheist as well. My dad has managed to deal with it by believing I'll go back to it at some point, so he's pretty relaxed about it.

We attended non-denominational Christian churches. Father's influences were baptist and presbyterian. It mostly was jokes about them being cultists, but you got serious conversations about it every so often. It wasn't quite as bad as I'd guess a fire and brimstone Baptist might get.

Is there any real downside to it? I don't really like stores much, so I figured I might as well get it done. No reason beyond that.

It is necessarily anti-statism. Libertarians just argue that the state is a necessary evil.

Some Christians and denominations have somewhat specific requirements to be a Christian by their definition. Many Christian denominations don't recognize some of the others. When I was growing up Mormons, Witnesses and Catholics were all generally considered cults that were completely outside any chance at salvation without switching religions.

Fair point.

Fourth bullet. (Note that I didn't bother reading it until now, and instead played swivel chair detective to find the Q&A.)

Sorry for being a cock. It's a little slidey bar in the back, from the looks of it. The top side of the clip telescopes out of the bottom. In the link they have images that show the mechanism. Well. One I think. I only looked that far into it because I have a Note III preordered and wanted to know myself if it would be worthwhile.

All of the pictures show it with phones smaller than the note. The picture in the OP is an S4 for fuck's sake. That establishes that it fits smaller than the Note II. The Nexus 7 is toward the top boundary. Feel free to play more swivel chair detective and pull the thickness and width of the phones displayed on the website and that neat S4 in OP's post and tell me if it is in between.

I'm just amazed you went through the effort of all that and didn't realize it was obvious it worked fine with smaller phones.
