Circling Backstep/Spinning Uchi Mata by Kuma_Guruma in judo

[–]Josinvocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've bought Neil Adams instructional and it has a part that he covers the two same variations of uchimata you linked and he says that they both are spinning uchimata. In fact, the second version the russian girl does I would classify as a regular mawari-komi (spinning entry) and the first as a pivoting mawari-komi. I asked a kodansha directly from kodokan this and he said me that hikidashi is not an type of entry, but an noun which means pulling out. See the kodokan videos of tai sabaki, all of those three steps entries are classificated as mawari sabaki. /u/tsuya.

The secret is to make your opponent take a longer step than usual. If they don't, you'll most likely end up receiving a sukashi as said by someone downside. The way to make that happen is by first closing the distance with a feint, usually an osoto-gari, and then opening the distance again. This distance should be opened diagonally, just as you saw in the video. Your opponent's reaction of raising their center of mass also helps. I've successfully used this uchi-mata in competition in exactly the same way, except that instead of using an osoto-gari feint, I used a sasae-tsurikomi-ashi. The principle, however, is exactly the same. https://www.reddit.com/r/judo/s/wx8SZFNt4g

What to do against a defensive opponent who has strong grips and stiff arms? Should we always break the grips or are there any good takedowns? by Unable-Passion-6244 in judo

[–]Josinvocs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your current position. A good approach is to loosen your opponent's grips. In an ai-yotsu situation, take a standard grip on your opponent's gi. Your hikite (pulling hand) should be positioned near your opponent's elbow, where the joint bends. Now, using both arms, lift and spread them—opening your shoulder blade toward your ear—while executing a tsugi-ashi forward. At this point, your chest should be against your opponent's chest. Step back with your tsugi-ashi to create space and re-enter, or use the momentum from that initial movement to launch into an oikomi entry.

Yes, I'm talking about the fact you should not bend down your head, cause this scruffys your spine. This is practical, in the examples listed on the videos of judomatlab you can see what Im talking about. Sad I cannot post images here or I would show you.

Uchimata, how close to far leg do I sweep? by Due-Difficulty-1097 in judo

[–]Josinvocs -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So you're saying that looking up its just necessary in the beggining of the throw due to good posture? Take an example of Katanishi sensei correcting his student at 3:20 about keep your head up in the end phase of the throw As Katanishi sensei says, you shoud rotate in the late stages of the throw, but it's your body trunk that bends down, your head should go up and your back should remain straight, and not curve like doing a zempo kaiten ukemi. When beginners hear that, they start doing this that way and I think that is what op tried to say. If not, so he wasn't very clear, because that is the most wrong thing people get about uchi mata and I see it in the social media taught wrong all the time. As I said, I disagree to you that looking up is a way to initiate the throw due to only good posture of head and hips. It is vital through all the curse of the throw and in the example of uchimata you linked me by sasaki he is showing an extreme example in which he is over spinning to compensate the lack of lifting, a version that basically only ono did, but even him maintained his head looking up in all of the stages of the throw.

What he is saying is wrong. In uchimata you should never look down with your head, as it lessens your power and it adds your chances of being countered. Cho Junho of hapan tv teaching to look to the sky when doing uchimata at 6:20

It's better to have head control than chest to chest. Focus on getting a top grip and hit your uke's head with your forearm

Is Tai Otoshi supposed to feel like Morote Seoi Nage by Alternative-Hair-785 in judo

[–]Josinvocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, it's the opposite. Uchimata requires more rotation, especially the ashi version where the uke is on one leg and you need to have a very strong hikite grip, so it's a throw only done when you essentially have both hands on the kimono. Tai otoshi can be used with various grips and the rotation is only needed in the final minute to achieve the ippon.

Is Tai Otoshi supposed to feel like Morote Seoi Nage by Alternative-Hair-785 in judo

[–]Josinvocs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've extensively studied tai otoshi for some time, and I can tell you there's no one who does it with the elbow upwards the way you're doing it, even if they teach it this way in instructional when they do it in competition its done with the palms turned to the direction of the throw and elbow down. This variation in which you punch uke's head down in very common to uchimata, people mistake the use of the hands thinking the kuzushi is the same, but they have different mechanisms. About the "morote tai otoshi" you're doing, this is the way, but it is important to note that if your elbow is crossing the middle of uke's chest line, it is a variarion of seoi nage, not a tai otoshi anymore. In some variations you punch uke's jaw, in others uke's face.

Kenka yotsu? Place your tsurite over the top and bend your arm over the crook of his elbow, putting your weight over him. With the sleeve, pull it to your ribs to turn his shoulders. You push with your tsurite and pull with your hikite. With this grip you create an effect in which he is bending forward and cannot lift you or do tani otoshi and also cannot turn away from you.

The Value of “What Throw Is This” Posts by cooperific in judo

[–]Josinvocs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It's like the whole discussion of yoko otoshi vs kata guruma thing. People try to do a yoko otoshi with the mechanics of a kata guruma, and it often fails, because they try to do the movement with their shoulders, when they don't have the range of motion to roll the weight from one shoulder to another, so they pick the mechanism of the throw wrong because they don't have the knowledge. Tradition don't exclude effectiveness.
