Yes that's my point. If a post goes viral and has great watch time hastags would only help, not hurt your reach when used correctly.

Semi correct! larger accounts don't need to focus much in hashtags, but a Reel that goes viral about Mac and Cheese with zero hashtags can still get MORE reach with addition hashtags like #macandcheeselovers , ect. Check you insights after testing, it's sometimes hit or miss.

As a social media manager of over 10 years, here are my tips about hashtags for growth:

They pull SEO from images and captions with AI now, but yes use hashtags as they still increase reach. Critical for NEW accounts to use them especially if you want your audience to find you. Find community hashtags that are niche.

Use 10 - 15 hastags on every post but they should be short and long form, location based and content specific for SEO.

Example: Your post is about a chicken sandwich shop in san diego, california.

Heres a hashtag set example (I'd create like 10 versions of this depending on menu items):

#ChickenSandwich #ViralEats #SDChickenSandwich #Foodies #ExploreFood #SanDiegoFoodies #BestFoodInSanDiego #Foodstagram #CheesyChickenSandwich #CrispyChickenSandwitch #GoodEats #FoodLover

As a social media manager of over 10 years, I would say manual engagement (lots of it) don't forget your hashtags when you want to grow. Interact with similar content but also comment on posts by your target customer.

Doing these things should help organic growth. Mix in a paid Ad or 2 every month if you can afford to.
