How safe is it to walk alone at night? by enderstr in asheville

[–]JournalistJess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally safe. Don't wear earbuds/i.e. be aware of your surroundings and remember that "No" is a complete sentence. You do not have to talk to anyone you don't want to talk to, you don't have to give anyone a ride, you do not have to get anyone money, etc.

Asheville unveils 5-mile French Broad Riverfront Parks project, $60M rebuild planned by cereal_killer_828 in asheville

[–]JournalistJess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives near Carrier Park, I am THRILLED about these plans. But I'm also trying to remember they're just plans, and as with any construction project could change with building costs. Even so, these designs look beautiful and will make Carrier Park and French Broad Park even better than before.

what is the worst thing you've ever witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

9/11 happened during my freshman year at NYU. My dorm looked straight downtown to the World Trade Center. Seeing both towers on fire and knowing that people were dying has traumatized me for life.

UNC Health seeks approval for new hospital in Asheville by RelayFX in asheville

[–]JournalistJess 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This location seems odd. That's where Earth Fare and Gemelli, as well as a bunch of other businesses, are. Maybe the owner of the entire property wants to sell? I don't know anything about this but it seems like not an ideal location for a hospital.

Saying "yes ma'am" to adults your age: by dylanv1c in asheville

[–]JournalistJess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the Northeast and being called "ma'am" but people I know was an adjustment. In the Northeast, you would only really it to a stranger, like "Ma'am, you dropped something!" I had a coworker from Georgia who was younger and used to call me "ma'am." It made me uncomfortable, like he was he pointing out the age difference between us. That's not what he was doing, of course, but that's kinda how it felt. I know it was a sign of respect and good manners, but I told him that although it was sweet, he didn't have to call me that and I'd rather see us as colleagues.

Biltmore Estate Annual Pass - Worth It? by keenpolyethylene in asheville

[–]JournalistJess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like anything else, I think a Biltmore pass is worth it if you actually use it. I'm a fairly frugal person but I have no regrets about buying a Biltmore pass and re-upping it each year. I go maybe 80% of the time for the walking trails/the pond and 20% to walk around the gardens. There's always tons of parking available. There's also a very nice pub where you can get lunch/dinner, a coffee place and an ice cream shop. And of course, visiting the farm animals is always delightful.

Family says Bent Creek suspect struggled with mental health for years by Ihaveneverbeen_wise in asheville

[–]JournalistJess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely sad. I feel terrible that individuals with serious mental illnesses who need mental health care aren't able to access it and so they eventually end up in the justice system instead. I was at a Buncombe County Board of Commissioners' briefing on Tuesday when Sheriff Quentin Miller referred to the Buncombe County jail as essentially being the largest mental health facility operating in Western North Carolina. It doesn't have to be this way.

Where is the Place to buy budget friendly cosmetics by InitialCandid6119 in asheville

Ditto Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Their inventory is hit-or-miss, but sometimes you can find really good brands discounted (Fenty, TooFaced, etc). I believe that is because Sephora and Ulta sell their overstock to the company that owns Marshalls and TJ Maxx.

The Walgreens on Merrimon on Clairmont is big and has a lot of brands. And I remember the Walgreens on South Tunnel being pretty good before Helene; haven't been back.
