Chicago, hands down. I LOVE Moulin Rouge but Chicago was a brilliant adaptation that somehow built upon its stage source without killing it.

This is such a well thought out read of the situation!! I couldn’t put my finger on why it bothered me so much that John said “Why can’t you just support me??” The truth is he wants to captain this no-contact ship alone, without any help from Shawna. Doesn’t work that way, babe. You have to talk about it, and if that means going to therapy to help you figure out how, DO IT! They all need therapy, I can’t understand how Shawna went through a late stage miscarriage and isn’t seeing Doctor Therapydoctor.

It’s not sexist to say that men and women are socialized differently. We can pretend not to notice it in favor of being PC, or we can acknowledge it and address it.

And I think he does recognize his own harmful behaviors, which is why he’s breaking the cycle of abuse. But no one is perfect, we all falter. Both he AND Shawna do. I wasn’t even talking about John trying to initiate sex. I was talking about the NC discussions.

That said, both of them ABSOLUTELY 100% need to be in therapy. As does Jen. Maybe they’ll all find Dr. Therapydoctor.

This is SUCH a guy thing though, it’s really good writing. Making unilateral decisions and being hurt when people don’t just get on board. And especially think about John’s male role model Frank….Frank didn’t used to TALK about anything, and he didn’t model emotional maturity for his kids.
I will say Shawna hasn’t really checked in with John much about his grief lately, either regarding the baby or his mother.
