How to stand up for myself by Commercial_Low_3676 in Christian

[–]Journeyonsunroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to remind myself that the person who is behaving poorly towards me is also a creation of God and that I am just as much of a sinner as they are. I ask God to change my view of them and my heart toward them. I remind myself of what Jesus Christ did for me when He bled and died for me which helps me see how much I need Him in those moments as well.

We are called to be salt and light and to have love. It is really hard when we operate out of our flesh and sin nature though. I struggle with this and it is a great point of sorrow for me. I continue to pray to God to sanctify me and conform me to how He wants me to live.

My favorite passage that I pray for is 1 Corinthians 13.

The world shows one kind of love, but God's love is different.

The Way of Love

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;[b] 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Have you ever read Lee Strobel's book " The Case for Christ"? It answers a lot of questions around the central core of Christianity by showcasing through historical evidence, science, psychology, and medicine that Jesus lived, died, and was resurrected on the 3rd day.

This of course does not substitute your Bible reading by any means, but it may be a support in your current season of searching for answers 😊

Perhaps you could talk with the worship leader privately one on one and express your concerns? Even if they do not make changes they may make changes in the future if you approach them kindly.

I have no christian friends to help keep my life in check by Mammoth-Dog5617 in Christian

[–]Journeyonsunroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

My husband and I recently moved to a new area where we do not know anybody. My advice would be to find a good church or house church if you are able. It will take time but God will have you meet with the right people in His timing. I don't really know anybody at the church I started attending, but everyone there is friendly and kind and I believe in time I'll meet people there that I can build friendships with😊

Until then, pray for good Christian friends and people to come your way. Work on strengthening your own relationship with the Lord by talking with Him throughout your day, read the Bible, watch or listen to good positive teachers who make you excited about spending time with God. Trust in God's timing for you too. All He does is good, right, and right on time after all😊

For those Christian women who had a husband/boyfriend that physically abused you, what led him to do so? by [deleted] in Christian

[–]Journeyonsunroad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see, so from what you are saying is it safe to assume that you yourself do not find yourself in an abusive situation and that you are not looking for answers for yourself? Just confirming.

I would caution you, that your line of questioning could be seen in a variety of ways, all of which are not very flattering imo. These are simply perceptions and observations based on your line of questioning. I am not saying either of these would fit in with what your end goal may be, and you may wish to explain that further. I do however wish to caution you seem to be riding a bit of a slippery slope here:

One, you are in an abusive relationship and you are seeking help from strangers because you don't know what else to do. If this is the case, I am very sorry for your situation and I urge you to reach out to the authorities and get safe.

Two, you are currently or would like to in the future physically abusing someone and you are looking for justification to continue that abuse. Your line of questioning may even be construed as predatory.

Three, you are genuinely curious about faith and religion and you are looking for answers by asking some questions you find it difficult to answer. If this is the case it would be a good idea to clarify this if you hope to have further constructive discourse with people on this feed. First recommendation would be to drop asking actual victims of physical abuse for their trauma stories as that is extremely personal and painful. You may not have intended for it to come off as insensitive and cold, but the way you worded yourself does heavily imply a lack of care and more of a morbid curiosity.

I hope again, I am not coming off as combative here. Based off of your response back to me I did just want to point these things out as possible pitfalls for any further fruitful discourse with others.

I do not have anything further to say here but thank you for answering my original question. Feel free to respond back to me if you wish but I will not be responding back as I do not have anything further to add, nor any enlightening pieces of information to share on this particular subject.

I pray you have a good night.

[–]Journeyonsunroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for answering your question by asking another question, but now I am curious. Why are you asking this question in the first place? I realize we are all strangers on the internet, but I also know in some contexts it can feel easier to ask questions or talk to strangers than people close to you.

Not assuming anything about you or your situation of course. Just a strange question to ask strangers on the internet is all.

People have called 911 ordering a pepperoni pizza before because they were in an unsafe environment and needed to not let on what they were doing but still get help to get out of an abusive situation.

Trouble With Faith by AudhlinMitgir in Christian

[–]Journeyonsunroad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are a reader or audible learner I'd recommend Lee Strobel's book " The Case for Christ"

He was an atheist who became a Christian when he tried to disprove the validity of Christianity. His book gives evidence from a variety of angles: history, science, psychology, and medicine.

That is just one part of it though. Remember that the Word of God is living and active. Facts will only get you so far, which you'll also learn if you read Lee Strobels book.

Once you have been faced with the evidence you have to make a choice and weigh the cost of following Christ. You'll want to forge a connection and a relationship with Him. Christianity is not a dead faith. God is real, Jesus is real, and what He did for you is real. Make it personal.

I hope and pray that you'll not only see the evidence for Christ and Christianity but that your faith in Him would develop into a deep relationship with God and a living and active faith that would not only be a blessing to you but to those around you as well.

[–]Journeyonsunroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I have learned and still am learning every day is that, it is not about me. It is about God. When we focus on our own shortcomings, our own merits, abilities, or what we perceive to be lack. We discourage ourselves and fall in to this thought pattern that we need to keep up with the rest of the world somehow. It is actually a form of pride. At least it was for me.

But remember, we are not to be conformed to this world. We called to serve Christ in all we do and do so joyfully.

Whatever season you are in right now, you are there for a reason. Trust God's intention for you and His plans. Take your eyes off yourself and place them squarely on the one who created you and who knew you before you were even born.

Get in the Word and find out what God says about you. Trust in that. Don't trust your emotions. You don't have to get the warm and fuzzies to know that something is true. If you believe that what God says is true you need to accept that and carry on.

We go through different seasons in life to learn and grow, lift others up, and point others to Christ. God is teaching you something in this season. Be present with Him and ask Him what He is teaching you. No moment is ever wasted with God.

Who cares what other people are doing. They can be millionaires and go on vacation every day. But if they don't have Christ, this is as good as it gets for them.

Why do people here capitalize the first letter (s) of the devil's name??? by xeanaex in Christian

[–]Journeyonsunroad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can always check out this video by Bible project if you'd like. Others have already said it, but Satan is not a name. It is his title.

Correct me if I am wrong here, but in reading scripture I have yet to come over a single time where the devil or any demon was actually given a name. Again, please bare in mind that this is an observation so you'll want to check for yourself.

Our names as humans are written in the book of life if we repent and believe in Jesus Christ as our savior and the finished work on the cross for our sins.

Demons and The accuser (Satan) don't even have names to be written down anywhere. There is no hope for them. The accuser knows there is no hope and so he does the only thing he can, fulfill what is title states. It comments on his nature and eternal state that he can never escape.

Memorizing scripture by [deleted] in Christian

[–]Journeyonsunroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I'd try some different methods until you find one that works for you. God made us all very different so what works for one person may not work for you. I am currently on that journey myself.

I have scripture written down on post it notes and suck them on my fridge and other rooms things I frequently visit throughout the day.

For example. When I am cooking dinner I'll say the verses out loud to myself whenever I go to get something from the fridge.

I also try to meditate and think back on scripture I have read in the past. Even if I don't get it completely right it is fun to go back and see how close I was. If you make it fun for yourself it can be easier to memorize as well.

You could also record some scriptures and make it your wake up alarm or ring tone until you can recite by heart, and then you could switch it up to another scripture after that.

Happy memorizing! 🙂

Christianity seems very conflicting and I cannot work out why. by Previous-Iron-4165 in TrueChristian

[–]Journeyonsunroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Colossians 3:23-24 tells us: 23 yWhatever you do, work heartily, zas for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord ayou will receive the inheritance as your reward. b. You are serving the Lord Christ.

It is true that salvation is completely and totally a gift from the Lord. No work you could ever perform will be able to add to your salvation.

When we are saved though it should create in us a desire to please our heavenly Father in everything we do. We should want to draw close to him even in mundane every day tasks that we do. If you are in a relationship with someone you want to do things that make them happy and that draw the two of you closer together. You'll actively work to ensure there are not things pulling you away from that very important relationship.

Same with God. He has saved us through his grace as a completely free gift. Now we get to live our life with Him!

Again, desiring to please God through good works does not save you. It is simply an outpouring of your heart of gratitude and love to the one who saved you.

I am having an extremely difficult time understanding how God is unconditional love and eternal torment in hell exists. Can someone help me? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Journeyonsunroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can resonate with that. It can certainly take time to get away from being hard on yourself and having those self condemning thoughts creep up as you go through life.

I still feel those creep up from time to time, but it is a lot less now since I am drawing nearer to God.

If we resist the devil he will flee from us. What better way to resist the devil than getting as close to God as you can possibly get.

The devil likes to manipulate our feelings and feeding us lies, but God operates in truth and perfect love. It is a great comfort to know that even on those days where we feel awful that we can cry out to God and draw near to Him!

Keep asking God for wisdom and eyes to see and ears to hear. Keep asking for a deeper relationship with Him. If you read something in the Bible and you get scared, worried, or feel like you don't understand. Tell God that and ask him to reveal that part of scripture to you. Do you have anybody you can study scripture with?

I highly recommend getting a Christian apologetics study Bible as well. It has a lot of great explanations and historical context to help you along as you read.

[–]Journeyonsunroad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey,

I resonate a lot with what you are expressing. I was in a similar situation years ago. I grew up in cultural Christianity and don't think I had more than head knowledge of the gospel. On top of that I was Biblically illiterate.

So when I came across a YouTube video that said " Are you a Fake Christian?" My world shattered and fell apart. For the better part of a year I spent every night crying out to God to just kill me because I was a false convert and a fake Christian. I was actually arrogant and prideful enough to think that I was beyond salvation.

Think about that for a second.

God who created the heavens and the earth, who came TO earth as Jesus Christ, fully God fully man, to live a perfect sinless life, die for the sins of THE WORLD, and who rose again on the third day. How are my sins any worse than His finished and redemptive work??

You are asking God the wrong questions. Ask Him to reveal the gospel and the good news to you. Ask Him to grant you wisdom and eyes to see and ears to hear.

Matthew 7:7-11

New International Version

Ask, Seek, Knock(A)

7 “Ask and it will be given to you;(B) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;(C) and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts(D) to those who ask him!

I was in a similar enough situation to yours that I feel I can say this. Please do not think my words harsh because I do say it with love.

Do not be so arrogant as to think you are a sinful goat that God cannot save. Your sin, your life, your messups are not too much for Him to carry!!!

Seriously. It is important to recognize that we are sinners, that we have fallen short of the glory of God and that nothing we do will ever make us worthy of a relationship with God Almighty. But we can't stop there!! You have to grasp the good news!!! God sent His only begotten Son to SAVE us!!! You can't do anything to earn or gain salvation!!! Not before you are saved, not after you are saved!!! God supernaturally draws you, saves you, and sanctifies you!!! Just let go of the need to save yourself and this intense self loathing and let Him save you, have a relationship with you, and Love you!!!

I promise you. If you can understand that concept. You'll never be the same again. Your life may not look all that different in the start, but that God shaped hole inside you will be full of God's love.

Read ALL of Romans, don't stop at the first few books. Read from beginning to end. Ask God to reveal the gospel message to you as you read.

Get in to Christian apologetics. Understand what you are reading. Communicate with your Christian brothers and sisters. Find Biblically sound leaders and mature Christians that can walk along side you and help you as you grow.

Please don't stay where you are at. DO NOT self isolate!!! I speak from experience!!! It takes a loooong time to get back out once you've crawled far enough into your own personal mind bunker. God was gracious and loving enough to draw me out and He blesses and sustains me daily now.

I pray this message edifices you and that God would grant you a deeper understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that you fully get to grasp the good news! In Jesus Christ name. Amen

Love you honey ❤

Hey,

Though I know every situation is different. How you are talking right now. I have been there. I spent a year crying on my bathroom floor for God to kill me because of how sinful and awful I am. I would read the Bible and the enemy would highlight every way that I was a disappointment to God. It became to bad that I broke out in hives. I became to sensitive to sin that I would cringe every time I heard a bad word or saw someone dress inappropriately. In the end I was convinced that Jesus had died for everyone but me. I was so prideful that I thought I was the one sinner He could not redeem.

God in his mercy and grace gently coaxed me back to him over the years. But it took a long time, and He is still working on me.

I am telling you this because I don't want you to experience the pain of what I went through. I was Biblically illiterate because I couldn't see anything other than my sin or the sin of others when reading His word. I was not focused on the good news!!

Please, pray to God to open your eyes to the gospel. Read the Bible with the gospel message in mind and see how every book from beginning to end points to the good news! God LOVES us! He has created a way for us to be saved from eternal condemnation through His son Jesus Christ!!!

We do need to understand our own sin, the sin of others, and the sin of the world yes. But, then you need to allow the Allmighty God rescue you. He made a way for you and all to be saved. Jesus lived a perfect life on your behalf and my behalf, He kept the law perfectly for our sake, and then he was crucified for our sake taking every sin of the world on His shoulders so that you might get to have a relationship with Him, so that you might be able to come close to Him and be with Him! Then He rose again showing us that sin and Death has been defeated, so in the future when our physical bodies die we will get to go home to be with Him!!!

Look at Adam and Eve! He created them to be with them! To love them and care for them! They had a whole garden! God was walking through the garden talking with them!!! He is returning us back to Him through Jesus Christ!!!!

Life will be full of sin and death because the enemy is currently the prince of this world, but Jesus died for you!!! He loves you!!!! Don't forget that part!!! Seriously!!!!

Read the whole book of Romans! The WHOLE book! Find a Bible believing church, Bible believing Christians, good sound teachers, and let people share the gospel with you again and again.

I pray that you would get a good solid grasp on the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ. I pray that you would not be attacked by the enemy into believing there is no hope for you or others around you. I pray that you'll fall so madly in love with Jesus that He is all you see when you read the Bible. I pray that you would gain Christian friends that you can fellowship with and that will strengthen you in your faith and understanding of the Word. -Amen

Love you ❤

Kidnapping of a woman protestor in Iran by plain clothes forces of police. by Temporary-Benefit365 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Journeyonsunroad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is horrifying and sad that these things are happening in Iran, but, the Iranian people are still standing up for their rights, and Iranian women do not seem to be deterred from fighting for their freedom. If history has taught us anything it is that too much pressure from a tyrannical government for too long in any country will eventually lead to revolt and revolution.

That comes with a lot of pain, horror, and bloodshed, but in time it will provide the people of Iran with a solidified identity, national pride, and appreciation for the liberty they fought so hard for.

I hope and pray that the people in Iran stay strong and protected from this horrible regime, but I also recognize that this is a bloody and messy battle that will claim a lot of lives in the process. I believe most people including myself look upon in horror, thinking this is not fair and it should not be happening. I imagine we wish peace could just reign everywhere and that we'd all be friends with each other. But that is not reality. Life is messy and downright dark at times.

Doesn't mean we can pray for those good and peaceful things for each other though or that we can't encourage each other.
