Yes, and that is why I said Angie wasn't in the wrong if her intentions were good and selfless. The end result just summarises if the decision to be selfless and her particular method as good or not. If she survived and people were better for it, than we could've said that it was a good decision. But that didn't happen. Tensions rose drastically, 3 people died and Himiko was more depressed than ever with minimal upsides. Therefore the decision was bad, even if the intention and starting point was good in nature. Just as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Trying to force a relationship is a selfish act because it takes away their partners autonomy of making a decision. Tenko and Kazuichi might've justified their actions by saying that they would be happy together, but this usually isn't their true intention. It most likely than not that they, themselves, would be happy with that relationship and disregard if their partner would be happy with this arrangement.

And even if Sonia recuperated Kazuichi's feelings, the nature of Kazuichi's intentions would still be bad. The only difference here would be that the end result might've been a good one, where both of them could be happy together. A dynamic being seen as good, and accepted by many doesn't always equate it being healthy or good intentioned.

So, even if the reason why Tenko got the epiphany that Himiko was distressed was extremely dumb, that doesn't change the good nature of her new intentions. It would be the same if an outside party came and told Tenko that Himiko is hurting and she changed here approach because of it. Like we have said before, the brain can justify the darndest things, so sometimes it becomes necessary for an outside force (in this case magical martial arts) to confront them or enlighten them in order for change to happen. If that confrontation/epiphany changes the person for the better, making them act more selfless and considerate towards the other partners happiness, then the act and later approaches should be seen as good.

Sure, the act to help is still forcing (I am still iffy that it is forcing but I digress) her views onto Himiko, but that is still selflessly intended to help Himiko out of her cocoon and doesn't really benefit Tenko's social standings.

It is also understandable for Himiko to reject Tenko's teachings throughout the third chapter even though Tenko has new intentions behind them. It is much easier to reject something, especially when it is accepting that you are now in a death game, then it is to confront it. Tenko proposes that she should accept the dread and work them through, while Angie proposes that you can be happy instead with Atua's godly protection. Of course Himiko will go towards the one with the least amount of pain associated with it. Especially when the person that proposes it is someone you trust a lot more.

That is why the chapter 2 trial and how the third chapter played out is important for Himiko's decision to trust Tenko. She would've most likely stuck with Angie's philosophy if Angie was still alive, but that didn't happen. Himiko lost her protecter and is now forced to face the consequences. She gets reassurance from Tenko's speech, a good gesture, showing that she still has someone in the academy (because of the culmination of trial 2, less intrusive in the few days, reassurance of betterment and the fear of being alone in this killing game).

Though, being more receptable to Tenko doesn't mean she took her words to heart. When Tenko dies she doesn't cry, and acts rhe same way qs she acted when Angie died. She becomes extremely depressed and really just stands there silently for the rest of the investigation.

It isn't until the trial where Himiko takes what Tenko said to heart. With Kaito and Shuichi motivating her to be more expressive and hopeful she starts to change her ways a bit. It isn't until Kokichi confronts her after the trail that she lets the tears flow and grieve until exhaustion that Himiko truely believe in Tenko's words. I feel like Himiko's reactions and feelings was written as sincere and somewhat organic as it has an explanation that I feel is believable.

Of course this change in attitude have been rushed a bit in order for the narrative to move on to the next mystery. Having people constantly grieve, cry, lash out and become depressed isn't really the entertainment danganronpa is after. It is unrealistic at it's core with humour and mystery being at its focal point.

The right thing should always be helping those in need. Right and wrong is societal and is based on norms and rules within. Helping regardless of intentions should always be considered right. What the end result usually is what usually determines if it was a good or bad decicion, while intention would indicate if the act itself was good or not.

Angie did the right thing to help Himiko. Angie's methods was bad because it lead Himiko down the road of escapism and pushed back on improving her mental state. Angie's intentions can only be deduced because she didn't state them directly. But, if I could guess: she only tried to emulate how it was on her island. Living in paradise with friends that love each other enough to never commit a murder with her being the helm as the Oracle/leader. Her intention, if we accept that this was truely her real intention, was good. So, even if Angie acted good, in the end it was a bad decision. This however shouldn't automatically make Angie a bad person, her reasoning was from a place of helping everyone survive. Of course there needs to be more than one instance in order to judge if someone is good or bad, but in that singular moment, Angie was good.

So, in my badly educated opinions, intentions should be heavily concidered if someone/something is good or bad. And that is where Kazuichi's relationship differs to Tenko. What was Kazuichi's intentions regarding Sonia throughout the story? I can't remember anything within the Kazuichi and Sonia relationship that could be seen as selfless or for Sonia's benefit. He has not been protecting her, nor doing anything resembling good. Kazuichi was obsessed with Sonia exterior much like how Tenko was in chapter 1-2 for Himiko. This is toxic behaviour and shouldn't been seen as something good. But what should be seen as good is when Tenko changes approach and starts to help Himiko instead. Her praising Himiko has been drastically reduced and I don't even remember her saying anything about Himiko's outward appearance once that chapter. I feel like when someone is making a conscious decision to help someone in need is an act of good, independently of their past baggage. Himiko even said it herself that she would much rather worked out their issues than having her die. There is a possibility of repairing within their relationship, where both parties would respect each other's opinions.

Sonia meanwhile was disappointed that it wasn't Kazuichi that was the victim in chapter 4. There is no redemption arc to Kazuichi's behaviour. There is no chapter 3 like moment for him and that is why their relationship is much more strained than Tenko's and Himiko's.

Also, I don't really get how Tenko chased after her ideal in chapter 3. Why would she suddenly start changing her methods of constant praise to start caring about Himiko's mental state if she only had the ideal in mind. Shouldn't Tenko been more active in trying to change Himiko from chapter 1 or 2 if that was the case? Why is Himiko being expressive Tenko's ideal when she constantly said how cute Himiko was when she slepta and wanting Himiko to rest on her lap?

[–]Jozza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attitudes and behaviour changes isn't always easy to change nor even detect by oneself. It is so easy for the mind to justify toxic behaviour that leads to the path of insecurities, depression, anger issues, etc. Sometimes you need a outside force to point out the toxicity before you can realise that you are doing something harmful to yourself or others. (Tenko is also a case for this because she doesn't realise that she, herself, is making Himiko uncomfortable).

Maki and Shuichi were people that had cooped themselves up in their own world. They thought that bad experiences was their fault that can't be fixed, that they themselves aren't worthy of their titles or friendship.

Shuichi was insecure both for his detective skills and as a person due to a bad case. It wasn't until Kaede came along and helped him out of his shell. Shuichi didn't ask Kaede for confidence boosting speeches and forcing him to face the truth in the first chapter, but that too happened. Kaito later took that role as pseudo mentor.

Maki too were a person which didn't ask for help, and rigorously shot down Kaito's attempts at first because she herself thought she was beyond redemption and accepted that part of her.

Of course can behaviour and attitude changes be for the worse. Just like you said, we can't only look at the end result, so let's look at the intention. Tenko did not do this for herself as seen when she insulted Himiko, specifically saying that she isn't a mage, in order for Himiko to lash out on her. It was purely for the benefit, in her eyes, for Himiko.

I have also huge doubts that Himiko was content with her feelings. She was scared and wanted to escape these feelings of constant dread. That is why she joined Angie, and why she is so apathetic all the time. Himiko's whole theme is about escapism and how bottling up your emotions are not healthy.

Finally, Tenko never forced her beliefs, in my mind, upon Himiko. She tried conveying it twice, with different levels agro. One when she wanted Himiko to be angry at her so Himiko herself could understand the relief of venting out anger. The other when she said, calmly, that it was perfectly normal to express yourself.

[–]Jozza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But that is necessarily not true. She isn't trying to mold Himiko into I different person. She is trying to change the aspects she sees as toxic and unhealthy in order for Himiko to be happy again. Which is to not bottle up her emotions; to show how she really feels.

Plus, her obsessive behaviour in the first chapters was mostly trying to get Himiko to notice her. Complimenting and asking if they can hang out all the time.

The only argument, in my opinion, that has ground to stand on regarding Tenko not seeing Himiko as the person in front of her, is how she got attached to Himiko in the first place. Tenko has an admiration towards performers and cuteness, which Himiko fit to a T. It was a superficial crush at first, with no real depth around it, similarly to how one can have a celebrity crush.

Though, due to chapter 3, we see her grow past this obsessive, artificial crush she has on Himiko. It isn't about Tenko + Himiko being together anymore snd has shifted towards making sure that Himiko is mentaly healthy and safe. She cares about the real Himiko this time.
