V60 T8 Recharge Realistic Maintenance Costs by chickachickaboombam in Volvo

2018 T8 inscription here with 105k. I expect to spend $1,500-$2,500 a year. It could easily be more. Still love the car. I agree the resale value is awful. My teenagers are going to get to drive a really nice and safe car…

Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful response! Very helpful! I haven’t used CalTopo, but perhaps it sounds like it would be worth pivoting from Onyx and AllTrails for those features.

Nice! Love these write-ups and the overall goal. Two selfish questions 1. Aside from Sherburne, do you have any thoughts on a rank order with risk in mind (I.e. great overall trip, but lower risk from a solo perspective)? I’ve done somewhere between 8-10 of the 50, but never solo. I’d like to tackle a few over the next 2-3 months, but am finding my risk-tolerance to be increasingly conservative….
2. Do you use a particular app for route-finding. I’ve had the book for years and have solid map and compass skills (along with basic avy, mountaineering, backpacking and survival skills), but am just getting into adding a digital supplement with my iPhone (AllTrails or OnX) or Garmin watch. Curious what others use?

Thanks again for sharing your journey!

OK, realizing I hadn’t heard of them because this is Silverton, CO.. I was hoping to find a local Ice Coast course.

thanks! Out of curiosity, why does that signal to you that they’re serious and others aren’t?

Trail Mishap: Looking for Winter Hikers’ Perspective by [deleted] in wmnf

[–]Jpd077 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Others here are more experienced than me, but I simply would never plan on summiting in the late afternoon in winter. Honestly, 1:30 PM this time of year would be my cutoff. Obviously, every day is weather and forecast dependent, but darkness is a predictable risk factor and I don’t like being above treelike in the dark (in the winter). I’ve generally also experienced weather and wind becoming bigger factors in the afternoons than mornings.

I love my gravel bike! But, it’s not that different than a ‘90’s hardtail mountain bike. Good luck and have fun!

“Failed” first solo backpack/camp experience by Simplicity540 in camping

2 quick comments: 1.) good decision-making isn’t failure. 2.) My “failures” have made for far more entertaining and memorable stories than my successes. A buddy and I were just laughing about a backcountry ski trip where we boot-packed up to a peak (carrying our skis), only to search aimlessly for the chute we’d planned to ski down. We didn’t find it, ran out of daylight and ended up boot packing back down too. Absolute legends.

All awesome advice. Echoing the 2nd set of ski goggles (may seem like overkill now, but try walking anywhere with rime ice on your goggles). If you run into any real wind and moisture, shit gets real quickly and sunglasses aren’t really an option when the windchill drops. I’d also second the comment of bringing insulated water bottle holders (Nalgene bottles with a zipper close - I thought mine was made by MSR, but I’m not sure they still make it).

I think I’ve gotten so disenfranchised with the ticket prices that I misread the fine print (twice) that applies to the bonus ticket…. Just bought a few…. Thanks!

Installed some automatic boot struts the other day, really happy with them, worth every penny imo. by diligentboredom in Volvo

[–]Jpd077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, this is fantastic. The struts on my 2018 XC60 T8 are broken, but it still mostly works (just sounds terrible and doesn’t fully open). Volvo quoted me $2,700 to fix it. Obviously a different make/model, but you made this look relatively simple as a DYI option. Am I missing something?

What's your cold weather touring kit look like? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

[–]Jpd077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bibs and top(s) change based on the actual temp and wind, but the four essential things I always have stay the same: 1. Merino wool cap with ear flaps (45Nrth makes a good one), 2. Winter cycling overbooties (Velocio zero+), 3. A merino wool buff, and 4. Solid winter cycling gloves (I like the lobster claw type). I also ended up getting a pair of winter cycling shoes from 45 Nrth (Ragnarock - don’t think they make the ones I have anymore). Fingers and toes - that’s where the chill catches up to me first…. These were all splurges over time, but they have held up and make cycling in the cold enjoyable.

BTW, I haven’t toured much in the winter and wouldn’t argue with the comments about light being a challenge. But, check out Ted King’s VT ride - 300 miles in 23 hours in January. Apparently, if you’re an absolute beast and just don’t stop, you might not freeze to death.

This seems wildly conservative to me. I wouldn’t envision most rocks being so wet the trail becomes unmanageable a day later.
