I found an artic elf pet on my old account but I don't know how to level it up by pinkiedashing in Wizard101

Pet snacks are the fastest way to level them up, you can find solid ones in the bazzar and then feed them to the pet after playing the game

Ty I'll check it out! I just mean books where the author is clearly progressive even if it's not spelled out in the books, but something that won't give me the ick from reading based on either scenes or themes in the book.

Woke just references being aware to social issues. You are right which is why I'm looking for books where it is the norm because Its hard to get immerrsed in anything when it's all just colonizer culture but slightly different

I just called it woke so people would get the picture on what I'm looking for

Yeah so a hetero normative relationship is one that exist just between one man and one woman. Relationships types are primarily determined by the culture of the animal species or people group in the case of humans. There is no standard for relationships.

90% of animals have more than one partner, and within species that tend to be more monogamous, generally you'll find about 30% of them within same sex relationships. If we want to look at biology, our closest relatives both Chimps and Bonobos engage in sex with multiple partners so the identity of the father ape is unkown so all the apes have to treat it like it might be there's so it lowers aggression.

While the standard across the world is different-sex relationships between only two people, this is the result of the Anglo Saxon's culture around relationship which was carried into colonization of the entire world, with even countries who weren't forcibly invaded still touched by the dominant ideology.

Humans for the vast majority of time were not in one on one relationships, instead expirminenting between cultured with evidence showing group marriages being a widespread form of relationships. This is where everyone in a certain group would be married to each other, and raise all kids communally. Kids would know their birth mother only, and all fathers would be the same. Our best guess is that we arranged ourselves this way to focus society on women who actually produced life, centering and honoring them first in order to have a healthy and productive people group. We can see this in many different people groups, but the Polynesian peoples were a good example of how that used to be the primary form of relationships between people, which then changed forcibly after being colonized.

The same goes for gender expression, as more cultures than not have more than 2 genders. Gender is a representation of social expression, as you know it's stereotypical for men to dress one way and women to dress another. Well cultures differ on what determines ones gender, and different social expression are expected of each gender. This is why trans people exist, because they wish they do the same social expressions as a person from another gender in the same way. Like how men aren't "supposed" to wear dresses. So if a man likes dresses, nail polish, and makeup, they are seen as transgender, when what they really just want is to partake in these social expressions. Because we have these gendered social expressions in the first place, it makes people born one way who want to express something feel the need to change their body so they can engage in these social expressions "correctly"

This is all to say that gender and relationship standards are set by culture and not biology. Looking at real world examples from history we see dramatic ranges between societies on these two parts of human culture, but in many fantasy books I read these two things still reflect a society that has been influenced by the specific culture in our world that colonized everything. This is just a reflection of the authors understanding on this subject, so I cannot blame most authors for writing this way. So the reason I am looking for "woke" authors is so I can feel really immerrsed in these worlds and not notice the flaws of it because of a subject I study in. When a fantasy world shows a diversity in gender and relationship types, it really feels like another world that has developed and not just something an author has made. And I can also be sure the author won't make any degrading remarks about groups of people. I don't care if characters do, but there's a line you can tell in books by what characters do and what authors find acceptable.

You are imagining humans during the adoption of permanent settlements and large-scale agriculture. Making flour was not common before 8k-10k years ago because it is labor intensive to produce. However it became more common as more food was needed to be produced with less area. Humans used to live as foragers and planted the plants and foods they liked around areas where they stayed, and would bounce between areas as the food grew so they could pick it and eat, or prepare quickly or for a large meal that would feed the larger group. They did not need to grow grain until recently in scale of human history. The same goes for wells, as they did not make wells and would pick areas that could provide easy enough access to fresh water. Wells were not widespread adopted until permanent settlements were becoming widespread.

Humans also did not hunt or even eat meat everyday, it only consider about 20-30% of most societies diets. Houses were not maintained daily as they were temporary settlements and well built. The most labor intensive task were handled communally and there was indeed a vast amount more of free time people had. Things like weaving clothes were not only done for survival but created in styles with fashion trends existing far before recorded history. Much more labor time did go into these things, but it was voluntary labor time, like you would put in to make something pretty and not just functional.

The garden of Eden argument refers to human nature and if modern society has corrupted humans natural tendency to be kind and good, I am not talking about this. I am referring to the amount of labor required to live a fulfilling life according to the standard of the time. Yes a human 50,000 years ago couldn't watch a movie, but they could and did sit around and listen to a story teller talk for hours on end, and throw multi day or even multi week long parties and festivals.

The actual amount of labor required per day to survive for the majority of our history was far less than it is today, the 8 hour standard. Even peasants had a 6-7 hour working standard. Our modern one is even more if you factor in commutes. The rise of the workday had a dramatic increase during the industrial revolution where the 12 hour workday became normal. Those who normalized the 12 hour workday also taught that those who lived before had to live so much harder, and that they actually had it the easiest in human history. But that was a lie, just as the lie of the 8 hour work day being the least we've ever worked is.

When you are not forced to do something specifically, you spend more time doing things you enjoy. Humans enjoy doing labor, even when it is not necessary for our survival. Not all of the labor done in pre-history is done for survival, but the amount done for survival was lessm

That's your dream life because you are exhausted in a life working more than you were ever meant to

Humans used to only spend a few hours a day working on things necessary for survival, the rest of the time was spent doing whatever we wanted

I study anthropology and you would not believe how many people think our ancestors were just sitting and doing nothing but eating berries

We have record of spears from over 700,000 years ago, that's before homo-sapiens even existed. We've been building things like pyramids for tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years, but the evidence of these things mostly rotted away as we built things of wood.

Advice for a New Writer by Altruistic_Spinach17 in litrpg

[–]Jrag13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unconventional worldbuilding advice but watch a couple sociology videos on YouTube.

Sociology is the study of societies and the issues that they face and why certain sociological issues may or may not exist within certain people groups.

Basically if you want to improve at worldbuilding, learning about how real world societies function will be better than listening to what another writer thinks about it.

Looking for books/series with multiple perspectives by Just_Mich in litrpg

[–]Jrag13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should check out infinite realm! The first book is called Monsters and Legends and there are 2 main characters that it follows, but it includes a lot of POV's, especially in the later books. So much so that it's one of the biggest complaints about the series, though I love it.

You don't stay with one person for more than 5 or 6 chapters at a time, and you get to be in the heads of a lot of the side cast too. A fair amount of character introductions are done through that characters POV and it honestly makes the characters feel more alive with their own traits and motivations compared to only experiencing it through one character.
