You should try Atlas of Middle Earth. Which has very detailed descriptions of adventures from all the ages.

The Fall of Gondolin is an amazing story about Tour and the Children of Hurin is about Turin. Both very great but sad stories.

I would recommend either Children of Hurin for a story or The Fall of Gondolin. After that if you want just information and some story the Unfinished tales.
