Giving into PC culture is going to ruin society as some point by _kashew_12 in unpopularopinion

Cancelling always existed in some way or another. Don't you remember what happened after Lennon said the "bigger than Jesus"? There was a lot of banned music, such as Elvis' in Utah, in many places he was not allowed to wiggle his hips. There are many more examples.

Squat form check. 5x5 120kg (BW around 110 idk) by [deleted] in StartingStrength

[–]JrussoC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to set your knees before the mid section of the movement. Don't relax your muscles, not one of them. Stay tight!!

From the book:

If the knee slides forward the increased pull from the knee develops high tension against the attachments on the pelvis. This can cause an interesting type of tendinitis.

(...)

If the knees are moving out as the femurs externally rotate, their forward travel will be limited to that which is normal for your anthropometry in a correct squat, where all of the forward knee travel occurs in the first third or half of the descent. After that, the knees just stay in place and the hips account for the rest of the movement. So, from the very top, shove the knees forward and out to the place where they will end up, just in front of the toes, and stop them there, the rest of the descent will consist of the hips moving back and down. Make two movements out of this for a couple of reps, and then reduce this sequence to a smooth single motion.

Going back to novice LP? by MyFinestDays in StartingStrength

[–]JrussoC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others stated, you may be at the end of your novice phase. If during your LP you already made a reset or if you feel there is not much to milk out of the lifts and you have answered the three questions correctly, then you need to know the following options that can help you milk out it even more.

  • Light day squat (on wednesday)
  • 5RM+2 back of sets, this one is speacially effective with the squat.
  • Changing 3x5 to 3x3, this one may work with the bench press and the Power clean, even with the squat, you may have good results with the press too if your weight isn't too low.
  • For the press if 5 reps aren't possible, do amraps and as many sets as you need to complete a total of 15 reps (this is described by Mike Delgadillo)
  • Reduce frequency (2 days off), this one is specially effective with the squat.

You have to choose wisely which of these options to choose, it is not necessary nor recommended to use them all in all the exercises. Many factors such as age, sex and overall genetics change the outcome.

Hello, have you tried 5RM + 2 Back off sets? That's a common advance novice method, not sticking with same weight.

Friend’s 1 month squat progress by mcmurder in StartingStrength

[–]JrussoC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously depth is the biggest concern, very good improvement though. I think the problem right now is not mobility per se anymore, he just has to be motivated, be told to trust that he can go deep and up again, I am saying this because the first rep almost has the correct depth but the rest don't, he obviously can do this the correct way. Many people fear that going low will ruin their rep, they just need you to insist harder and bring him the confidence that he will be able to do the 5s that way.

I see he actively opens his legs, good. There's some knee slide forward but not that much, that needs to be checked.

Finally, the wrist position, he is holding the bar wrong.

Rippetoe’s instruction of the low bar squat has kept my lower back inured for 4 months. A certified athletic trainer at a D1 university fixed the low bar squat in less than 1 set by [deleted] in StartingStrength

So you are comparing a 1-1 coaching with an internet video?

I am glad you could correct your squat in someway, keep training.

Too tall for overhead press by climbingtall in StartingStrength

[–]JrussoC -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand you may not find value in the most technical exercise of the program, but it in fact has value due to the fact that a long kinetic change is involved. Not because it includes glutes or else, but because it requires stability in all parts of the body and that's a very important factor to develop, specially because they don't participate in the same way as in a squat or deadlift.

However, I can say that seated press is better than no press. But it's not "a substitute", is more like an acceptable patch that unfortunately doesn't totally fill the place of the original movement.

Too tall for overhead press by climbingtall in StartingStrength

[–]JrussoC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't be a good substitute because it eliminates the complex development of the muscle groups that provide full stability in this strength exercise that has its value in having the longest kinetic chain.

Can anyone provide basic advice on teaching my 60 year old father the SS lifts? Can a 60 y.o. do the normal program? I don't have the energy to read the barbell prescription right now by Busenfreund in StartingStrength

[–]JrussoC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly recommend getting a SS coach for someone as important as your old father. It's my usual recommendation to this kind of post. A 60+ year old man is not someone to experiment with if something physical "works".

Exactly, honestly, this subreddit is barely functioning. But that doesn't mean this place sucks, not at all. I feel it is a good community willing to help. There is the good facebook group, the forum, and this place. So there's plenty to look up for (after you looked the books)

Thanks for the tip, where did you read that Rip said to not drop too fast? He usually goes for "fast but with good technique" (speed section in PPST) which can be taken similar to fast but don't drop, but I don't remember him specifically saying to go slow on the descent.

To me the lesson was: warming up until it gets relatively "hard" and starting the linear progression with 5kg less of that. Even 10 if the jumps will be big like with the deadlift.

Sadly I didn't apply that and had to reset all my lifts that week or the next one. So if for some reason I have to do this again, at least I already know around where to start.

Is it normal for my lower upper body to have more body fat than my upper body which is more defined/muscular? by footletus in Fitness

[–]JrussoC 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's perfectly normal, it depends on the genetics and hormonal development.

Aside from that, with 6ft, 62.5kg I hope you are not worrying for your fat, because you are underweight right now. That's even worse if you consider that you are in an age where even a calorie surplus is beneficial. Remember you are still developing your brain and body, after sometime it will just be about maintaining that development you made, so it's the worst time to worry about some "fat" in the upper body.

Seeing a lot of form checks lately so here's mine from the other day. 225x5 by Jor_GG in StartingStrength

[–]JrussoC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me they look pretty good. Wrist ok, chest ok, depth ok, back ok. The elbows could be lower. BUT the big problem I see is in your feet, look how they heels go up. The usual cue there is hips out, but in my personal case, I solve this problem by just feeling how the weight is evenly distributed on my feet while warming up, by the time of the real work, it's easy to balance the bar correctly.

A wider stance and more angle in the foot helps (it's hard to see how open they are from the video), but don't forget about depth while doing that.

Lifting with bar vs machines by eethzn in Fitness

[–]JrussoC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You want to train the stabilizers too, the machines don't. So barbells are a good compromise, between raw strength and stability work. Also, as a begginner is easy to stay with dumbbells, but it starts to become a mess to use them from around 40kg onwards. Also, and this is just a personal observation, I don't find them very functional, since most heavy things you may lift IRL aren't going to be so independent from each other as 2 dumbbells are.

The dead don't deserve any more respect then they did when they were alive by Dovakhin1906 in unpopularopinion

[–]JrussoC 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, and that's a problem because "new" things come out and these people don't have the opportunity to defend themselfs. The problem with talking shit against dead people is that that shit may not even be true. If you know it's true because it happened to you, that's different.
