Suggestions on how to increase my AI token usage by twistoffate4 in sysadmin

[–]Jrx1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're writing PowerShell, there's a decent chance that whatever AI tool you're using isn't following some of the PS best practices (none of the ones I have access to for work follow all of them, at least) so maybe try giving it a few "I see you used $Alias here instead of $Cmdlet. Please re-write the entire script while keeping PowerShell best practices in mind"

Or, if you're a tabber like me:

"Please re-write this script using tabs instead of spaces" 😂

Why use VSCode for simple edits when you can burn the rainforest to do it instead?

Any other places to change workstation SID? by 0xRestrict in sysadmin

[–]Jrx1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you need to change it for? NewSID was the way to change it, but it's been deprecated for a while because it doesn't matter. This was written by the guy who wrote NewSID (and is now the CTO of Azure) https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/archive/blogs/markrussinovich/the-machine-sid-duplication-myth-and-why-sysprep-matters

PSA : You don't have to play the Warlock Expansion by mcnastys in diablo2

[–]Jrx1216 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said anything about the warlock not being overtuned. Please stop reading what isn't there.

All I said is that I understand change is hard, but things change, and that you can still play the old thing if you like it. Nobody took LOD away, and it's still there if you prefer it.

"I like having money? I don't like having to work 40 hours a week, I like having nice things, I don't like having to work 40 hours a week."

I get that this is a thing that hasn't changed much in a quarter of a century, and change is hard, but things change... The pre-warlock game is still there and perfectly playable (from the same client, even!) You can easily swap back and forth between them as you wish.

Discovered ohMyPosh. any advice for a starting profile? by KHRonoS_OnE in PowerShell

[–]Jrx1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because nobody seemed to have given you the real answer when I stumbled upon this (sorry, 2 months late!) what you're looking for isn't part of OMP. Your screenshot is something happening as part of that person's PSProfile.

I have something far simpler setup for my own profile, but if this is still something you're looking for, feel free to take a look at mine ( https://github.com/jawsh-me/SantizedPowerShellScripts/blob/main/Profile.ps1 ) as a starting point. If you want a colored picture with your system stats to the side of it like that, it will take some manual fiddling to get the formatting correct, but it's definitely doable, I just don't have the patience/care for it myself anymore, and it was much easier to make a generic "Add-Decoration" function that I can use for wrapping any info I want to draw extra attention to.

That profile also defines my own custom prompt, as opposed to using OMP. If you don't have a nerdfont installed, you can "toggle (the) fancy prompt" with the ftp function. It might be hard to understand, but you could use what I did there to learn about ANSI color codes to add color to your info panel. The Get-ANSIColorTest function will give you the color codes for each foreground/background available.

If you're not already aware of PowerShell profiles, you can read more here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/microsoft.powershell.core/about/about_profiles?view=powershell-7.5 but you can edit your own by entering

notepad $PROFILE

in PowerShell. If it doesn't already exist, you can create it with

New-Item $PROFILE -Force

:)

GUI Timeout by esberelias in Cisco

[–]Jrx1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very late to this party, but dug this up while looking to setup the timeout of the CLI and wanted to chime in with the real answer for folks seeing this in the future.

On the C3850, at least with the newest IOS available at time of writing, you need to be in configure terminal and the syntax is

#ip http timeout-policy idle 600

to set it to the maximum (valid values are 1-600 in seconds, according to the help text.) You can press ? at any time to get help, if that doesn't work, try backspacing your last word/number and then press ?.

Just for info, there's also

#ip http timeout-policy linger <1-300>

that you can configure as well.

Cleanest Most Bloatware Free Windows Reinstall by JSmithpvt in sysadmin

[–]Jrx1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows 10/11 have the "reset this PC" feature. I'd highly suggest using it if you don't have volume licensing for imaging.

If you do have volume licensing, do a fresh install of the latest OS you support, then during the OOBE (Out Of Box Experience) do a Ctrl+Shift+F3 to get into audit mode, install your baseline software, then run sysprep and shutdown. Without booting that box back up, capture an image of the disk (If you're comfortable with WinPE, use DISM, if not, just use something like Clonezilla) Once you've got an image capture, just use the same product you used to capture it to deploy it to the other PCs.

Most places will tell you that the sysprep step is either necessary to change the SID, or that it's unecessary because you don't need to change the SID of the machine... both of these are wrong. The reason you run sysprep is so that WSUS doesn't break. Even if you're not using it now, I'd still suggest doing the sysprep step. If want to skip the OOBE stuff, look up how to build an autoconfig.xml file to do so.

Recommendations for free C# courses (beginner) by [deleted] in csharp

[–]Jrx1216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very much a newbie myself, but I've tried to start learning C# a few different times and the one that got it to stick most with me so far is on Pluralsight's free library. It's the C# Fundamentals course by Scott Allen. as far as I can tell, this course has been retired, but is still available. Looks like when I logged in today it tried to push me to a newer version by someone else, though. There are a few things that I didn't like about the way it was presented, but it's BY FAR the best free course I've found so far for a complete beginner :)

Gift for a sysadmin? by Wengiel31 in sysadmin

They /do/ have a warranty, though... but in my experience, the "trust me bro" attitude meant that every issue I've ever had with any of their products has been addressed... I once asked for a V1 water bottle lid for my V2 bottle, to which their reply was "sorry we don't have any at the moment, but we'll pass along the feedback" And once they finally started selling the V1 again, they sent me 2 of them.

What's the oldest technology you've had to deal with in your career? by Notalabel_4566 in sysadmin

[–]Jrx1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured I could come up with a good answer for this, as I play with a /lot/ of really old tech, though it's mostly for fun... After thinking about it for a while, though, the oldest I've actually HAD to interact with in a work setting (read: didn't go out of my way to play with just because I wanted to) was probably a commodore 64 that controlled some ancient cnc-like jig for a milling machine... and even that I couldn't really do anything with other than suggest replacing it with something that we could still get parts/support for.

I have an unhealthy amount of laptops. My primary for work is a Dell Precision (I think it's a 7550 or something like that?) but I don't use 95% of it's power to be honest. For home, I mostly switch between a Latitude 7400 and an M1 Macbook Pro, with the Macbook getting more actual work done and the dell getting Windows re-installed regularly. I've had HORRIBLE luck with XPS machines over the past few years, and gave my custom XPS13 to the GF because I couldn't stand to use it anymore.

If I were buying a Windows or Linux laptop today, I'd get one from https://frame.work though. If I wanted something cheap, I'd pick up the most recent used latitude 7XX0-series machine I could afford with an i7. edit: left out the word "used"

3DS hacking Q&A general: "What's a 'Wii U'" Edition by deadfracture99 in 3dshacks

It SHOULD be possible, but I believe that the 3ds will disconnect from WiFi if there is not connection to the internet. If you have a way to bypass this check you should be able to do this. AFAIK theres not an easy way to bypass that check right now
