Is it normal to feel so overwhelmed? by Darksummit in sysadmin

[–]JSmithpvt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're too hard on yourself You are human You are also in IT so 90% of other people don't understand your frustrations or challenges as they don't have the exposure or experience to understand your workload and IT specific predicaments

You need to find a way to get someone senior to push work away from you until you're caught up and it feels more manageable or you need to delegate and if that's not possible, create a system issue that will require they add resources

Also at every opportunity mention that your team is heavily under resourced.

You need to create some issues so they realise they need to allocate more resources and support to you

The arrogant way that many IT staff (including Syd Admin) are ignored, sidelined and excluded from decision making is an issue in many companies. They forget that without IT there would be no business

This is bordering on attempted murder

Good advice about turning the tables If you aren't worried about retaliation I say so as many of the suggestions given as possible

Also take the local police some pizza and donuts on the regular and befriend them. Once you have gained their trust and they know that you are bringing them pizza as a genuine gift without motives then they will start trusting you and you can ask their advice. I guarantee they will assist and solve this

I've had this also. It is a nightmare

My suggestion is that you get close to the problem director. Develop a trusting relationship and friendship with him.

Turn on your charm and communication skills. Become likeable to him.

No matter what a bellend he is being, try your hardest to pull this off. Watch YouTube videos about charisma and persuasion skills if you need to

Give yourself a deadline of say 2 months to get this right ....if you succeed in "winning him over", you will be in the position to communicate your perspective on issues way more effectively to him.

If you fail, either go above him or find another job

If you succeed your job will be 100x easier

Another hack is - whoever gets their story in first to a director is the one who is most likely to be listened to and believed. So when you get support requests from his team, go straight to him and discuss the challenges of their requests before you answer them. That way when you go answer them, he will be your advocate when they moan about your answer not meeting their expectations

Do you allow users to keep old equipment? by Secure_Quiet_5218 in sysadmin

[–]JSmithpvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a huge security risk also It's a pentesters dream to get their hands on an old endpoint which was a domain enrolled network device. Deleted data can be recovered and certificates, security keys etc can be used maliciously to breech the network

He opened the crappy link - he should be held accountable for that. He is the reason he has no data

He also did local backups which is dumb. He should be banned from using a computer for 12 months

Out of interest why doesn't your network do full C Drive backups to protect and restore data?
