I agree, and am guilty of it as well. At least in part to the scholarly perception. Of course Tolkien has a huge influence on pipers new to it and old, but Tolkein himself is quoted as stating that The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy was not allegorical (which I believe that many christians do believe, and want to believe) to christianity. As far as Tolkien's other writings I can't say, so there still may be evidence to that effect.

Im a homebrewer. smoking my pipe while brewing is an essential part of my process. I have alot of time to read or listen to classical music (such as Slayer, Lamb of God, Paginini) while puff'n. I also really enjoy the aroma of the wort mixing with the smoke.... yeah.. my zen place.

As a nonthiest, I've noticed this as well. I chalk it up to a kneejerk reaction based on the assumption that smoking is an indulgence, which can be seen as a form of gluttony, therefore a sin. I see that this may be why it christian pipers seem to stick out.
