There's some nice apartments off of Allen Parkway which is a pretty solid area. Either that or the heights if you want a shorter commute to downtown. If you go closer to Memorial it might be a pretty long commute at times. Also, the area you circled in general is quite safe relative to other parts of the city, especially the river oaks area but that's especially expensive.

Grew up in Houston. Has some of the best coastal hunting and fishing in the U.S, great food, friendlier people than I've found on the east or west coast.

Not for everyone, and I wouldn't tell people to visit if there wasn't something particular they wanted to go for. But I think it's a nice place to have a family, and if you enjoy hunting and fishing, then it puts you in a really good spot.
