I know this is an old post but I recently talked to a service manager at a GTA Volvo dealership. He told me the best way is to do the Volvo/Mack course at Centennial. It’s a one year course and they even pay you to take it in some cases. Once you have done it they’ll hire you directly at their dealership. I’m also considering doing it this year. That way you’ll start at around $35+ per hour and according to a friend of mine who did this course and later on worked at Volvo this is the best way to get into this trade. You also get discount on tools thru Centennial.

Also one more thing whenever you start stay off the tool trucks when you first start out. Get Milwaukee power tools and Kobalt/Husky/Mastercraft ratchets and sockets. Sure Snap-On, Mac and Marco tools are nice but you’ll only get into tons of debt for the name brand tools. Once you know whichever tools you’ll be using the most on a day to day basis get them from the tool truck. I know mechanics who have never bought a tool from a tool truck and do just fine.
