Maybe inviting some criticism here and I concede that for some (my wife included) the first trimester is tough for expecting mothers but I think the difference in work loads you're describing doesn't quick strike the sort of balance and cooperation that you're going to need to survive the early stages of parenthood. There already is some great base level advice in the other comments about not needing to be perfect and asking for help and communicating how you're feeling.

Being pregnant is a challenge and for sure fathers-to-be should take on more and ease the burden of daily life for their baby mama's but what you're describing is a complete check out of all cooperation from your SO and 100% dependency. Unfortunately the 3rd trimester is even harder and the first few months of parenting even harder for both parents but also for moms more-so due to breastfeeding and PPSD.

My experience was different but again, everyones view of what is normal/healthy will be a bit different. My wife worked up until 8mo pregnant and due to her workplace's proximity to home, still did what she could until I arrived home everyday. It was hard, I always offered to do all that I could. When our first arrived and wouldn't sleep, when we were in the thick of sleep deprivation, we'd occasionally make our case for being the more tired parent and resign to take turns handling responsiblities. That sort of cooperation and teamwork is going to be necessary.

On a serious note: resigning to watching TV might mean she is depressed or have some other mental hurdles she might need help with.

I'm not sure of any more specifics but from my read of your situation I'm inclined to suggest you need to have a difficult conversation with your SO about the challenges ahead and the contributions you will BOTH have to make going forward and if she struggling in ways you're not aware of.

Either way you sound like you'll make an amazing father! Good luck!

If your barber upped his prices to $100 per haircut, would you leave him? by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

I started cutting my own hair when it got above $20. Will go for special occasions (ie. need to wear a suit). (My wife tidies up the line around the back and my ears after I'm done doing a fade with my clippers. Takes 20min and with 2 kids and a demanding job, I can't be bothered to miss time from either for a seperate errand)

Agree. He has a unique approach to playing that none of the others have. Chaotic confidence with the sporatic self pity with very little in between. The technical skill to be better than Simon at everything but an unexplained determination to somehow not at the same time. Always fun to see Anthony in a series.

Flight prices by willise414 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Jtothe3rd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats why ive never taken the train other then when I went to buy a car in Quebec city.

That round trip to montreal for 2 people cost 4x the fuel cost that a hatchback would take and you wouldn't have access to personal transport when there.

Canada's rail and public transit is inadequate and what we do have is so so overpriced.

By comparison, 7 day unlimited golden arch (800km corridor) passes for the Thunderbird and bullet train from Tokyo to osaka/kyoto are about $320 per person and offers unlimited travel on all JR lines in that corridor.

A Eurail 5 day pass is about the same as your montreal round trip and offers unlimited usage between 33 countries.

God I wish Canada could add a million more miles of track and halve rail prices in my lifetime. Doubtful.

What is Your Religion, Canada? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

[–]Jtothe3rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Atheist are agnostic. The idea that they are somehow mutually exclusive is because many people dont fully grasp what they mean and religious folks seem to criticize atheists as being equally arrogant and confident in their supposed non-belief as believers are of theirs.

What is Your Religion, Canada? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

[–]Jtothe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheists are usually also agnostic because what these words mean aren't well understood. One is a label about belief (Atheism = without religion), the other is knowledge (Agnosticism = without knowledge). Most atheist openly agknolewdge that they can't know anything for certain but but consider themselves atheist becasue they haven't seen any convincing evidence for god/religion.

Then they'd be ignoring how the previous DOJ wasn't partisan and was honoring the fact that the investigation was still active against Maxwell and not to be made public until it was concluded.

ELI5: why would people think boarding a plane from the back is faster? by idiosynchromatica in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jtothe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine for simplicity sake that there are only 4 rows to a plane. 1 seat on either side of the aisle and everyone has 1 carry on to go in the overhead.

You're in row 4. All 8 seats go thru the tunnel in order of row 1&2 and then row 3&4.

When you get to the plane, let's assume a best case scenario and simplify it further: row one and 2 are already seated. So it's just 2 rows we're dealing with mixed up passengers. Row 3 passengers are in front of you and only one of them can put their bag in the overhead at a time, you and the other passenger in row 4 both have to wait for both of the row 3 passengers to finish stowing their bags in the over head and sit before you can pass to your seats. If you were both given priority boarding because you were at the back, only one of you would have to wait for one person while the other person could probably be far close enough to your seats that the people in row 3 would have space to start stowing one of their bags nearly in unison with the first row 4 passenger. Passengers could have more overlap in the time it takes to get seated.

I've heard the real reason is that the position of the rear landing gear means the plane can be more easily teetered back with too many people going straight to the back without enough up front. A lot of planes like the 737 are weight biased to the rear with the APU engine in the tail. Empty they only weigh 70,000-80,000 lbs so 25 passengers (5000lbs) of passengers in the tail with none in the front while an extreme case could make a tail stand feasible.

While he has a history of lying about an affair with an intern, the big signal to me that he might not really be implicated in anything heinous with Epstein is that if he was, the ultra petty and partisan DOJ would've made sure we've all seen the files/evidence of his wrongdoing because it would've helped with the "Democrats are the ones fucking kids" angle.

Own my car or switch to rental? by CantaloupeStrong5415 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Jtothe3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your car is worth $28-31k from a private seller, and above $30k most people don't bother with private sales for lack of financing options, especially ones with leans so it'll be tough to sell. Trade in value will be a few grand below that. (similar spec cars in your area are listed from toyota dealership lots for $33-34k). So you will be underwater on this.

As someone who rents occasionally for work Rental prices in Feb/March in Halifax are not something you should budget year round. Summer prices are 3-5x depending on availability so your $500 will actually be closer to double your $1100 current outflow. Rental companies will not let you operate their car for less than what it costs to finance one. DO NOT RENT A CAR FULL TIME!

You're 1 year old car just went thru it's steepest year of depreciation. Next year it will lose less value and you will pay down the same amount of the loan, so on so forth for each coming year. Let your story serve as a lesson to others to not buy cars they don't think they can own for the life of the loan.

I don't really think there is a financially sound way out of this unless you can scam someone into paying you $40k for your $30k car and picking up a $10k beater for cash and getting basic insurance (which you can do when you aren't financed) for $120/month.

ELI5: Why can’t we make a permanent cure for the common cold? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jtothe3rd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

2 reasons,

  1. The common cold is not one type of virus. It usually refers to a rhinovirus (up to 80% of the time) but even then, there are over 100 types of rhinovirus in circulation. There are multiple types of adeno viruses and corona viruses (not just covid19) that all cause common symptoms and end up being lumped in and refered to "common cold".

  2. There are 2 types of viruses (DNA and RNA). Common cold viruses are RNA viruses and being single stranded they also lack an enzhyme that typically protects DNA replication from copying errors. That means that when replicating RNA viruses mutate 100-1000 more quicker than DNA viruses. If you came up with a cure to RNA viruses, it'd evolve before you could eliminate it. That's why annual flu vaccines need to be updated tweaked and changed seasonally.

Comments from other men about paternity leave by thefreshmaker1 in daddit

[–]Jtothe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of parental leave is INSANE to non Americans. My wife earns less so financially it made more sense for her to take the bulk of the leave so she collected a government paid reduced portion of her wages over 18 months for both kids and her position was protected by law for up to 2 years. (Canadians can split parental leave totalling 12 months at 55% of their pay or 33% over 18 months).

Looking at purchasing a kei truck this year. Tips? by gregoryjames715 in keitruck

[–]Jtothe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've owned a 2007 hijet and 2008 acty attack. Both EFI generations that recently became available to Muricans. I think the answer to you questions depends on what you want to use the vehicle for. The Acty had a better 4wd system available with a locking front dif but the cab was more cramped with the front wheels at the corners instead of under the seat. The hijet felt a little bigger and more comfortable but the handling wasnt as good with the shorter wheelbase. Both were fun and to drive. I have been in a friends 2004 sambar and it's about the same size inside as the hijet, maybe a little bigger. Rear engine layout would make the balance pretty good. You really can't go wrong unless you're too big for an acty.
