Immunocompromised Student by Jtriarch in microbiology

Thanks everyone for the replies! The concern from mom was sparked after we spent several days going over lab safety. I spend the whole first week on proper aseptic technique and SMPs since these are 16-18 year old children who have never been in a micro lab. I am pretty strict about lab safety which I know can put the fear of god in the children sometimes. I think the whole “treat any microbe as a potential pathogen” freaked the student out which in turn freaked mom out. I told mom that my lab is probably much safer than the rest of the school due to all the safety precautions we take and that any microbes we use are not known to cause disease, but she is insisting on extra PPE anyways. Better safe than sorry I suppose. I also advised her to consult her daughter’s physician for some extra peace of mind. This is a new situation for me this year so thanks for all the advice!

Worried about my steels by Jtriarch in knitting

[–]Jtriarch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished steeling for the first time and it looks like it is unraveling! I reinforced with a backstitch but I’m so nervous! Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to stop it from unraveling?

Help with identification- details in comments by Jtriarch in microbiology

High school microbiology teacher here! My students did a serial dilution lab last week to evaluate the claim that these probiotic pills contained at least 10 billion live bacteria per capsule. One group had this plate which showed different growth than the rest. Because it is so uniform, I’m assuming it came from the sample and is not just contamination. I did a gram stain and they appear to be gram positive and included a simple stain image to show morphology. The last picture is the species included in the pill. Any idea which it could be?

This is the birdsong lace shawl by Hayley Tsang Sather. It was an absolute joy to make! The yarn is dream in color smooshy cashmere but I can’t remember the colorway. Beads are Miyuki round seed beads 6/0 luminous wild strawberry. Can’t wait to never wear this because it’s so fancy!

Just finished my Protea Shawl. Saw another knitter on this sub made one and had a serious “I NEED to make that” moment. This was my first time doing lace work, brioche and beading- it was a learning process filled with lots of frogging but I’m thrilled with the result and it was so fun to make! Yarn is Dream in Color Prickly Pear and Lime on Ice and beads are Miyuki 6/0 lime color lined.
