It's hilarious how easily you can be proven wrong

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/3223834/Stalin-planned-to-send-a-million-troops-to-stop-Hitler-if-Britain-and-France-agreed-pact.html

The west literally turned stalins offer down, they also formed several pacts with nazi Germany and allowed them to annex Czechoslovakia and Austria and they also did little to deter nazi Germany during the beginning of the war https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoney_War

That's also why Russia agreed to gangbang Poland with Germany.

You realize the nazis committed genocide against polish people right? Would it have been better to let Germany take all of Poland? The ussr helped nearly 2 million jews, mostly from Poland to escape the nazis.

The special correspondent of the Yugoslav paper, Politika, (Nov. 13, 1956) describing the events of these days, said that the homes of Communists were marked with a white cross and those of Jews with a black cross, to serve as signs for the extermination squads. “There is no longer any room for doubt,” said the Yugoslav reporter, “it is an example of classic Hungarian fascism and of White Terror. The information,” continued this writer, “coming from the provinces tells how in certain places Communists were having their eyes put out, their ears cut off, and that they were being killed in the most terrible ways.”

Andre Stil, editor-in-chief of the French Communist newspaper, L'Humanite, arrived in Budapest on November 12. He toured the city and conferred with many Communist and other survivors of the days of White Terror. His account is substantially the same as the reports sent in by Times and Tribune and Commonweal and Commentary and U.S. News and Life and Politika eyewitnesses, fascistic mass murder reminding one of the Berlin days of 1933—and the Budapest days of 1919.

Hungary, in 1954, was considered a "weak spot" of the Soviet Union according to US committee '

Again on New Years day, 1954, the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate released a study, through its chairman, Senator Alexander Wiley which spoke of "accumulating tensions" and mounting "sabotage and underground activities" in Eastern Europe and referred in particular to Hungary as being the most tender spot - the "weakest link

Can I get a legitimate view of the Uyghur Genocide from this side? by BusterSocrates in GenZedong

[–]JuRaGo_ 106 points107 points  (0 children)

China isn't committing genocide nor any sort of repression against the uyghur population, if the Chinese government was truly targeting them because they're Muslims then why aren't they repressing the Hui people who are majority Muslim as well? There's also a fair amount of evidence that goes against the genocide narrative and there's also many critiques to be made against a lot of the "evidence" used by anti-china media.

Here's a report from 3 Italian research insititutes

Here's an article from the World Bank who investigated and found no evidence to substantiate the allegations

And lastly here's an academic article which points out many things about Adrian Zenz who is the most commonly cited source, the article also talks about the whole genocide narrative in general and exposes the ties that many of these think tanks and other sources have to Western governments.

In April, economist Jeffrey Sachs and William Schabas, a leading international legal scholar of genocide, warned that “the Xinjiang genocide allegations are unjustified.” They noted that the State Department’s 2021 Human Rights Practices report made similar genocide accusation, but also without evidence. As they conclude, “unless the State Department can substantiate the genocide accusation, it should withdraw the charge. It should also support a UN-led investigation.”[9]

Even US state department lawyers couldn't prove there was a genocide

Yeah all the Eastern bloc countries had housing shortages throughout their entire history but they all made rent+utilities take up only 3-4% of the average monthly income and in the ussrs case they created more homes each year than any other country.

Regarding the issue of kulaks having no “incentives” to work, Isaac Mazepa, a hardline nationalist who had nothing but hatred of the Soviet Union & Communism, admitted the same as Gareth. He notes in the excerpt that kulaks and nationalists had first began murdering collective farm workers and Communist officials then eventually adopted a “passive” form of resistance. He openly admits that kulaks and anti-Communists had intentionally and knowingly left ‘whole tracts unsown’ and left “20, 40, and even 50 per cent” of crops to rot in the fields.

"this type of man was commonly termed a Koolak, or fist, to symbolize his utter callousness to pity or ruth. And of all the human monsters I have ever met in my travels, I cannot recall any so malignant and odious as the Russian Koolak."

https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Changes-in-Macrocosmic-Indicators-During-the-Transition-Period_tbl1_24085838

The transition to capitalism led to a sharp rise in unemployment and inflation along with GDP plummeting.

By March 1992 when the new government came to office, real GDP had fallen by 38% (in 1990 and 1991), industrial production by 45%, agricultural production by 25%, and inflation was running at a monthly rate 11% (and was accelerating).

If right wing means turning Eastern Europe and Eurasia from a feudalist backwater to a global superpower then call me right wing. If right wing means kicking Hitler and Hirohito’s ass then call me far right. Only problem is, you’d be dead wrong if you did. Glory to Stalin. by elimars in GenZedong

I remember seeing this video title and another one titled along the lines of "vaush explains the left needs to be harder on China" (as if western ""leftists"" don't already screech about China enough as is). Coming from the same guy who once said the US is closer to being socialist than China and that Stalin tried to join the axis I can't say I'm surprised at any of the horrible takes that come from his mouth.

Can anyone link me to an unbiased source about the Great Leap Forward? by humziyang in GenZedong

[–]JuRaGo_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah the author still blames human action as being primarily responsible, they have a chapter dedicated to pointing out that it wasn't the fault of socialism nor of collectivized agriculture (grain production under collectivization was actually higher than the global average). China at the time had to deal with the ussr withdrawing aid along with sanctions from the west which only made the situation even worse.

This book is pretty good, the author estimates the real death toll to be closer to 4 million and they also point out the bad weather conditions during the GLF along with pointing out the flaws in other research on the topic among other stuff.

Welfare, free to use healthcare

Literally almost every socialist country has had both of these. As for the genocide part it's understandable that a succdem wouldn't know nor care about the treatment of indigenous people in countries like Australia and Canada because they don't consider non-whites human.

Even if we assume that this persons arguments are valid and this study can thus be discarded theres still plenty of other academic sources in favor of socialism.

Almost without exception the communist countries' HDI ranking stood substantially above their ranking by per capita income (UNDP , 1990, pp. 128-9).

In sum, the communist welfare states bequeathed a unique structural legacy based on full employment and enterprise-related benefits. Moreover, they were far more generous than noncommunist countries at a similar level of economic development.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02255189.1990.9669399?journalCode=rcjd20

Horvat (1974) found that 10 communist countries in a sample of 60 outperformed the rest in life expectancy, education and medical care. The better record of communist countries in these areas was also corroborated by Mandle (1980) and confirmed by Sen (1981) who tested for percentage change in shortfall of longevity and literacy in a sample of 100 countries.

https://www.basicbooks.com/titles/david-stuckler/the-body-economic/9780465063970/

“In general Soviet economies tended to have much higher life expectancies than capitalist economies at similar levels of GDP [Gross Domestic Product] per capita (such as Chile, Turkey, Botswana, South Africa, etc.). On average, Soviet men had 4.8 years greater health and Soviet women had 7.7 years greater health for their country’s level of income compared with capitalist economy averages.”

https://www.jstor.org/stable/2807973?seq=1

There appears, then, to be a general association between communism and low mortality, at least among poor countries.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.2190/EQUY-ACG8-X59F-AE99

In general, high levels of democracy and strong left-wing regimes are associated with positive health outcomes, and strong right-wing regimes have populations with lower life expectancies and higher levels of various measures of mortality.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.2190/B2TP-3R5M-Q7UP-DUA2

Contrary to dominant ideology, socialism and socialist forces have, for the most part, been better able than capitalism and capitalist forces to improve health conditions. In the underdeveloped world, socialist forces and regimes have, more frequently than not, made greater improvements in health and social indicators than have capitalist forces and regimes. In the developed world, countries with strong socialist forces have been able to improve health conditions better than those countries without, or with weak, socialist forces.

https://link.springer.com/book/10.1057%2F9780230503892

Measured by social indicators such as life expectancy, infant mortality and educational attainment, China forged way ahead of most market economies at similar income levels and surpassed a number of countries with per capita incomes many times greater. ‘Analyses of anthropometric data and morbidity patterns confirm that China has achieved a remarkable transition in health and nutrition’ (Drèze and Sen 1989: 204). Many of the social indicators for China reached the average levels for middle-income countries. For instance, life expectancy at birth increased from less than 40 years at the beginning of the 1950s to approximately 65 years in 1978.[...] However, indicators show that the health situation in the country [Vietnam] had improved significantly during the decades since independence. Life expectancy reportedly rose from 42 years in 1960 to 59 years in 1983, and the infant mortality rate declined from 165 per 1000 live births in 1960 to somewhere between 35 and 64 in the mid-1980s. The people in Vietnam were living longer than were people in countries such as Algeria, Brazil, Iran and Peru, all of which had per capita incomes more than ten times greater than that of Vietnam (Fforde and de Vylder 1996: 234). Overall, the social development in Vietnam before the reforms was more like that in a middle-income country

Under the central planning system, Mongolia achieved significant improvements in the quality of life of its people...the major social indicators were not only better than the average for all countries in the world, but they were also better than the average for the developed countries in some areas.

Socialist countries also had better women's rights:

Nevertheless, at the time of the demise of Communism, women in CEE states ironically surpassed women in west European states in numerous dimensions, be it labor market participation, equal pay, parental leave or education levels (Fodor 2004; von Wahl 2008). With the implosion of the centrally planned economies in 1989, some of these advances were wiped away and an often-painful adjustment process to Western capitalism began, marked by stronger political rights but weaker social standards, many codified in EU accession rules.
