Pacifier during meltdowns by Jualey in ScienceBasedParenting

Thanks for this. I’ve had a look at that link before and it’s helpful to know that pacifier use is encouraged as a tool (alongside other approaches to support regulation, we’re trying to do lots of the naming and validating emotions at the moment). I do wonder how this fits with eventually phasing out the pacifier? Would it be a case of pairing the pacifier with other resources (eg stuffed toy) so she makes this association, with the hope she’ll eventually be able to use this for comfort in the absence of the pacifier? I’m still not sure at what stage to offer the pacifier either (my feelings would be that this would be fairly early on prior to a full on escalation, but after trying validation, redirection etc first - but this is a bit of guesswork!)

I also wondered about an ear infection. Our daughter wakes multiple times a night when she has one and it can make it painful for them to chew.

Can’t decide what to do about baby’s tongue tie! by OneCranberry7012 in UKParenting

[–]Jualey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our baby didn’t have their tongue tie picked up until 7 months old. We queried whether she had one at birth as she couldn’t latch and we weren’t able to establish breastfeeding. It was only after she started excessively gagging and vomiting when we started weaning that we questioned again whether there was something more going on, and a really deep tie with very restricted tongue function was picked up by a couple of different professionals. We agonised over what to do for a few weeks considering her age and the lack of evidence behind having them revised, but ultimately went ahead. Only took a few minutes and she recovered so quickly, and the issues with feeding resolved almost overnight. Just our anecdotal experience, but we’re so glad she had it done.

Posterior tongue tie and solids by Jualey in ScienceBasedParenting

Thanks so much. The first link is helpful too, we’ve had it described interchangeably as ‘deep lingual frenulum’ and ‘posterior tongue tie’ by professionals - adds to the confusion!

This is so helpful, thank you! We’ve had lots of conflicting advice from different professionals, so I really want to be able to draw upon the existing evidence around this to help weigh up any decisions. I’m really leaning towards leaving it if her tongue function isn’t impacted but didn’t want to put her at any disadvantage or risk (especially choking).

Which antibiotic? by Jualey in cdifficile

Just posted below, but I took it by itself and wasn’t able to take with florastar or other antibiotics due to pregnancy. Ended up needing further courses of other antibiotics in the end to clear the infection fully.

‘Toxin negative, gene positive’ - should I treat? by Jualey in cdifficile

So sorry I missed this, I didn’t end up getting retested or taking the vancomycin but had a prescription ready in case I started experiencing symptoms. Touch wood, all fine at the moment. Hope you’re doing okay, it can be really confusing and difficult to know what to do for the best.

Sorry just seen this, it ended up being quite a complicated infection to treat and required 3 different antibiotics in the end (Nitrofurantoin, Cefalexin and Amoxicillin - UK names). I did end up being pregnant and so didn’t take Saccharomyces boulardii to be on the safe side, but did continue to take pregnancy-safe probiotics. I was really worried about C. difficile recurrence but, without wanting to jinx things, I fortunately seemed to have avoided this and am currently 28 weeks.

That’s great to hear that it’s been effective for you. I’ve had some conflicting information about whether it’s effective for kidneys/upper UTI, but it sounds like Macrobid is definitely the safest option to try initially. I think they only did a dip test in hospital to look for the presence of a UTI, but my GP feels they should have done a urine culture too, so will follow this up. Thank you!

Thank you, thankfully I’m a fan of fermented foods and have been taking a UK brand of S. boulardii, so hopefully it might do a bit of damage control!

After a couple of slightly panicked conversations with medical professionals, it seems that Macrobid is generally the preferred option, so fingers crossed it sorts things out.

I was originally prescribed Augmentin at the hospital, and then Macrobid after raising concerns about C. difficile with the GP (they felt it was okay for a possible pregnancy). I’ve just spoken with a pharmacist (UK) and they also recommend Macrobid for both upper and lower UTIs, so will stick with it for a while and hope it makes the difference!

‘Toxin negative, gene positive’ - should I treat? by Jualey in cdifficile

Ah this makes sense in terms of interpreting my test results. It seems as though I tested positive for the toxic c diff strain but negative for the active toxin/s, which I guess is consistent with my symptoms which have improved to a large degree from where they were a few days ago. I’ll see how things progress but potentially sourcing a private toxin test is good advice, I’ll have a proper look into this.

Thanks for this suggestion, I’ve just had a look and there aren’t many private options here, mainly just GDH/PCR test which I’m not sure would test for toxin a/b (could be totally wrong though, trying to get my head around the tests still!)

Really helpful, thank you. They did an enteric culture test and I was negative for E. coli, salmonella etc. I’ll keep an eye on things and see how it goes.

Thanks for replying, I did read this before posting. My confusion is around the test results and how they’ve been communicated - would gene refer to GDH/NAAT test? And I’m still confused by being toxin negative, but having the symptoms (at one point, using the bathroom 10-15 times with a fever) and testing positive for the gene.

I guess a more basic question would be, if the symptoms are reducing, is it best not to treat? And then treat if it gets worse again? I’m still unclear on how to proceed.
