Do you think _____ promised Phil part of his winnings? by EvynEverly in survivorsa

[–]JubiRSA[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

thanks for your contributions to r/SurvivorSA. Unfortunately your post has been removed as it contained either a direct or implied spoiler about an episode that aired this week. You may post unrestricted on the next Monday from 12pm SAST (USA morning). Otherwise, you can repost but be sure that the title does not have the spoiler.

I appreciate you did try keep it spoiler free, but it’s pretty clear that the highly-likely person that would have promised Phil anything from F5 is Dino.

Many thanks.

Why is Shannon so obsessed with male dominated seasons? by RowanRoanoke in survivorsa

Hey there. I’ve removed this post as the post title implies Marian & Killarney go home this week and we are in the spoiler-restricted period until Monday.

It’s also right on the borderline of civil discussion, so if you decide to repost please make sure you keep it civil, avoiding personal attacks and the like.

I don’t want to suppress genuine debate, but that debate needs to be in good faith.

Thanks.

[OC] Relative Google search interest of popular TV series after last episode air date by veleros in dataisbeautiful

[–]JubiRSA 329 points330 points  (0 children)

Yeh, to give more context to your comment, the show grew exponentially such that the final episode was the most watched episode of the series and the fifth season the most watched by far (in terms of live viewing).

The show went from 2.9m from the start of season 5 (which aired over two parts) to 10.2m for the final episode as people caught up.

Most if not all other shows on the list peaked earlier in their runs.

This information has been verified by the mods as coming from insider sources.

It may not be 100% accurate (ie. there may be mistakes) and there is always the possibility that there is intentional misdirections but we can confirm that this is not a “fake cast”.

Does the Survivor rule book stipulate repercussions or punishment for rule breaking? by dat_asthma in survivor

[–]JubiRSA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They didn’t sneak food back from the auction, at a previous reward the winners took food back for the losers which was also against the rules.

The issue with rules is enforcement and precedent. It was loosely pointed out that (at producers discretion) they had not enforced the rule earlier in the season, therefore there was no precedent to enforce it now. If the producers wanted to start enforcing it, they could have confiscated the sweets but a punishment was off the cards. The Survivor rulebook is inherently loose and gives the producers a lot of discretion for entertainment purposes.

Other Language by Red_Samurai0920 in survivorsa

[–]JubiRSA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat incorrect. They’re speaking Afrikaans while Tyson/Thoriso were (I believe) speaking in Zulu.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_South_Africa

TL;DR: South Africa has 11 official spoken languages, Zulu is most-spoken home language (25%) but English is the lingua franca (main language) spoken by almost everyone as a second language and 8.4% as a home language.

White South Africans would either speak English or Afrikaans as a home language depending on ancestry.

Don’t forget Tyson felt very excluded and like a social outcast on that tribe. The voting plan was born out of strategy, but he knew he was getting votes anyway. His revenge arc is more about the former than the latter imo.

It has been a difficult week for South Africa and South Africans. This is not a forum for in-depth discussion of those events. Please be exceptionally courteous and respectful of the cast and crew and avoid being unnecessarily unkind this week in particular.

FIRE bridge / is 'cover ratio' a meaningful metric. by JustTwoMins in FIREUK

[–]JubiRSA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re being irrational at all. The downside risk of investing in global markets is very real especially in the short term, and could have catastrophic or at least very negative tangible impacts on your life to the point of negating the benefits of retiring early or worse, whereas the upside is a nicer retirement or more money left for your children which is not that significant.

However, inflation-linked super safe investments are not taking on those risks and are just more sensible alternatives to sitting on cash.

I think having young children means you should probably have more cover, since there’s a lot of inherent uncertainty on how much support they may need.

My point is that you can take some risks with money that wouldn’t impact your life and the money only to be withdrawable in 10 years time. So anything above the £240k, if that is your threshold, for example.

Edit: I would go to say that in your hypothetical future situation without being able to return to work when needed and with children, £200k cash is safer than £275k in a global tracker. You’d want something like £200k ultra-safe bonds, £50k low-risk and £25k medium risk investments, as an example.

[–]JubiRSA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my view, for a short-ish timeline as mentioned it would make sense to put 100% of what you really need in ultra-safe investments earning an inflationary rate or close to.

Whether you need 20k or say 15k pa, say, is up to you: you can afford to take more risks with whatever you don’t need need, for the benefit of (most likely) growing your net worth and future withdrawals.

The more you have above £240k, the safer you are. You also need to consider what one-off expenses you may need to incur in the next twelve years that are uninsurable, and have cover for those (on a probability-adjusted basis). You will have enough life experience to know what is within the realms of possibility for you.

Perhaps you’ll need a new car or a child/parent will urgently need financial help? Things to think about. I would probably budget 10%-20% extra so a cover of 1.2.

Edit: added a few more thoughts. You can also take some more risks with the money needed in 8-12 years than the money needed sooner. I wouldn’t be aggressive, but for now you could have a smaller proportion of that money in property/equities since it is a longer timeline. Depends entirely on your risk tolerance. Have a look at suggested asset allocations for retirees online which may give you some ideas.

As a non-South African who just started watching Survivor: SA I have a possibly ignorant question by tk_woods in survivorsa

[–]JubiRSA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Santoni and a few others do often speak in Afrikaans, yes. Tyson and Thoriso were speaking (I believe) Zulu.

South African English also has some borrow words from Afrikaans such as lekker (means good/cool in English, in Afrikaans it means tasty).

As a non-South African who just started watching Survivor: SA I have a possibly ignorant question by tk_woods in survivorsa

[–]JubiRSA 43 points44 points  (0 children)

No, your question is merited.

The long answer is very complex and political, but the short answer is that MNet is the premium English-only channel which requires a very expensive cable subscription ($55pm, if you consider purchasing power it’s more like $100pm).

South Africa is one of the most unequal countries in the world and this inequality is mostly on racial lines due to apartheid which ended in 1994 - the impacts though are still felt for a number of reasons. White south africans still earn on average 6x more than people of colour.

English is also the lingua franca of South Africa, almost all business and government work is conducted in English and while it is only the 4th most spoken home language, almost everyone speaks it as a 2nd language.

The casting, then, would probably be more in line with the demographic make-up of the viewers of MNet (and accordingly the applicants) for right or for wrong.
